Book excerpt: Restoration and Eighteenth-Century Poetry 1660-1780, originally published in 1981, considers poetry written between 1660 and 1780, a period which, although largely recovered from its nineteenth-century reputation, still attracts widely varying critical responses. Abandoning the old labels such as ‘neoclassicism’, ‘romanticism’ and ‘sensibility’, the author focuses on descriptions of genres and their formal elements and traces the broader patterns of literary and historical change running through the period. Eric Rothstein describes different poetic modes- panegyric, satire, pastoral and topographical poetry, the epistle, and the ode- to suggest their aesthetical possibilities as well as their process of change. He also considers style and the uses of the past, topics which have often caused particular problems for the students of the period. What becomes clear is the extraordinary originality, flexibility and power with which Restoration and eighteenth-century poets handles the stylistic assumptions and the body of poems they inherited and employed in their own works.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Elizabethan Influence on the Tragedy of the Late Eighteenth and the Early Nineteenth Centuries This work purposes an examination of tragedy during parts of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries for evidence of an Elizabethan revival. The drama made a considerable contribution to the literature of the Romantic Period. It experienced reaction against the extreme classicism of Pope and Boileau, as did poetry; and like poetry it expressed the reaction in a freer form, a deeper lyric feeling, and an increased appreciation of natural background. That the results in the field of drama are disappointing intrinsically and in quantity with those in other literary fields is due to a set of causes that need not be discussed here. The phenomena, however, were unquestionably present. In the plays of the later eighteenth century one becomes increasingly aware that the ennui of the age and the prosaic character of its life are producing a natural revulsion of feeling; one notices, slightly at first, then very evidently, the influence of romantic forces like the Reliques, the researches of Gray and Warton, the Garrick Shakespeare, and later the strong tides of German romanticism. Each of these new tendencies pointed back to the glamor of an older time, when life, partly it is true because of retrospect, but partly also because of its inherent qualities, was a colorful pageant, and a happily unlearned people still felt the mystery of existence and wonder about things eternal. Playwrights and poets alike experienced that "Revival of the Middle Ages" that Heine gives as his definition of romance. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years the canon of eighteenth-century poetry has greatly expanded to include women poets, labouring-class and provincial poets, and many previously unheard voices. Fairer’s book takes up the challenge this ought to pose to our traditional understanding of the subject. This book seeks to question some of the structures, categories, and labels that have given the age its reassuring shape in literary history. In doing so Fairer offers a fresh and detailed look at a wide range of material.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This anthology of 18th-century English poetry is extensively annotated for a new generation of readers. It combines the scope of a period anthology with the detailed annotations of an authoritative single-author edition. Selected poets include John Wilmot, Earl of Rochester, John Dryden, Jonathan Swift, Anne Finch, Countess of Winchilsea, Joseph Addison, Alexander Pope and William Cowper. The guiding principle of the annotation is one of thoroughness: the editors concentrate on works where the meanings have changed, on primary allusions and on relevant details of social and political history.

Book excerpt: Before the Empire of English offers a broad re-examination of Eighteenth-century British literary culture, centred around issues of language, nationalism, and provinciality. It revises our tendency to take for granted the metropolitan centrality of English-language writers of this period and shows, instead, how deeply these writers were conscious of the traditional marginality of their literary tradition in the European world of culture. The book focuses attention on crucial but largely overlooked aspects of Eighteenth-century English literary culture: the progress of English topos since the death of Cowley and the cultural aspirations and anxieties it condenses; the concept of the republic of letters and its implications for issues of cultural centrality and provinciality; and the importance of cultural nationalist emphases in 'Augustan' poetics in the context of these concerns about provinciality. The book examines imperial aspirations and imaginings in the English literary culture of the period, but it shows how such aspirations are responses to provincial anxieties more so than they are marks of imperial self-assurance.
