Book excerpt: This book aims to trace the history of neutron scattering from its pioneer days, to give an outline of the achievements in its main fields of application - notably magnetism, chemistry, lattice dynamics and biology - and some account of its present status. Articles are contributed by pioneers who have worked in the subject for more than 40 years. With stories and reminiscences of the early days in fifteen different countries, the book captures something of the flavour and opportunities of neutron scattering and shows the changes in the way of life of neutron experimenters over the past fifty years.

Book excerpt: "A first-principles discussion of the fundamental neutron interactions . . . the writing is clear, and the explanations stress essential physical principles . . . an excellent survey."—Physics Today "A must for libraries of all universities and laboratories that are engaged in nuclear physics, particle physics, nuclear energy, astrophysics or condensed matter research . . . an outstanding multidisciplinary introduction to the physics and applications of cold neutrons."—Physics World "So many tables, facts and figures . . . the coverage is remarkable."—American Scientist This encyclopedic reference work covers nearly every conceivable aspect of neutron physics. Assembled by an expert in the field, it ranges from the neutron's role as a major element in tests of the standard model of astro-particle physics to its use in nuclear energy generation and the study of condensed matter systems. The multidisciplinary approach includes detailed treatment of strong, weak, and electromagnetic properties of the neutron as well as parallel developments in cosmology and astrophysics. Each subject is placed within its scientific context and receives considerable attention to historical detail.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first systematic experiments in neutron scattering were carried out in the late 1940s using fission reactors built for the nuclear power programme. Crystallographers were amongst the first to exploit the new technique, but they were soon followed by condensed matter physicists and chemists. Engineers and biologists are the most recent recruits to the club of neutron users. The aim of the book is to provide a broad survey of the experimental activities of all these users. There are many specialist monographs describing particular examples of the application of neutron scattering: fifteen of such monographs have been published already in the Oxford University Press series edited by S. Lovesey and E. Mitchell. However this book will appeal to newcomers to the field of neutron scattering, who may be intimidated by the bewildering array of instruments at central facilities (such as the Institut Laue Langevin in France, the ISIS Laboratory in the UK, or the PSI Laboratory in Switzerland), and who may be uncertain as to which instrument to use.

Book excerpt: Neutrons, which are a penetrating yet non destructive probe, are ideally suited to studying the structure, organisation and motion of molecules responsible for the physical properties of materials under a variety of conditions. Applications are in fields as diverse as colloid and polymer science, earth sciences, pharmaceutics, biology and engineering. This book will be of interest to both present and potential future users of neutron sources working in these areas, as both a useful reference and a comprehensive overview.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: X-Ray and Neutron Diffraction describes the developments of the X-ray and the various research done in neutron diffraction. Part I of the book concerns the principles and applications of the X-ray and neutrons through their origins from classical crystallography. The book explains the use of diffraction methods to show the highly regular arrangement of atoms that forms a continuous pattern in three-dimensional space. The text evaluates the limitations and benefits of using the different types of radiation sources, whether these are X-rays, neutrons, or electrons. Part II is a collection of reprints discussing the development of techniques that includes a modification of the Bragg method, which is a method of X-ray crystal analysis. One paper presents an improved numerical method of two-dimensional Fourier synthesis for crystals. This method uses a greatly reduced process of arrangement of sets of figures found in the two-dimensional Fourier series. The book also notes the theoretical considerations and the practical details, and then addresses precautions against possible inclusions of errors in this method. The text deals as well with the magnetic scattering of neutrons, and one paper presents a simple method of gathering information about the magnetic moment of the neutron besides the traditional Stern-Gerlach method. Nuclear scientists and physicists, atomic researchers, and nuclear engineers will greatly appreciate the book.
