Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Elementary Aspects of the Political Prathama Banerjee moves beyond postcolonial and decolonial critiques of European political philosophy to rethink modern conceptions of "the political" from the perspective of the global South. Drawing on Indian and Bengali practices and philosophies from the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, Banerjee identifies four elements of the political: the self, action, the idea, and the people. She examines selfhood in light of precolonial Indic traditions of renunciation and realpolitik; action in the constitutive tension between traditional conceptions of karma and modern ideas of labor; the idea of equality as it emerges in the dialectic between spirituality and economics; and people in the friction between the structure of the political party and the atmospherics of fiction and theater. Throughout, Banerjee reasserts the historical specificity of political thought and challenges modern assumptions about the universality, primacy, and self-evidence of the political. In formulating a new theory of the political, Banerjee gestures toward a globally salient political philosophy that displaces prevailing Western notions of the political masquerading as universal.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book demonstrates five approaches to the theory of world politics and shows how these lead to distinct attitudes on critical issues. Portraying five imaginary spokesmen--a Natural Law theorist, a Realist, a Fideist, a Rationalist, and an Historicist--Donelan outlines various perspectives on world affairs and then debates the positions. The discussion covers fine main aspects of world politics: conflict, alliances, intervention, war, and commerce. Using a classical philosophical approach to engage the reader in this lively debate, Elements of International Political Theory provides a basic understanding of the philosophical ideas that underlie opinions and decisions on world problems.

Download or read book Rethinking the Resource Curse written by Benjamin Smith and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2021-04-22 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Element documents the diversity and dissensus of scholarship on the political resource curse, diagnoses its sources, and directs scholarly attention towards what the authors believe will be more fruitful avenues of future research. In the scholarship to date, there is substantial regional heterogeneity and substantial evidence denying the existence of a political resource curse. This dissensus is located in theory, measure, and research design, especially regarding measurement error and endogenous selection. The work then turns to strategies for reconnecting research on resource politics to the broader literature on democratic development. Finally, the results of the authors' own research is presented, showing that a set of historically contingent events in the Middle East and North Africa are at the root of what has been mistaken for a global political resource curse.

Download or read book You and the State written by Jan Narveson and published by Rowman & Littlefield Publishers. This book was released on 2008-04-04 with total page 229 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jan Narveson asks the provocative, philosophical question: is the state necessary? In this unusual introduction to political philosophy, Narveson draws on the history of political philosophy and discusses its main theories_classic liberal, democratic, socialist, radical_with reference to how each sees the place of the individual in the political order. Narveson's critique is situated within issues of freedom, authority, economic welfare, international relations and others to explore how and whether the state is necessary. His argument is ultimately anti-statist and takes seriously the question of whether and how some version of anarchism might make sense.
