Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elements of Political Economy This work is intended primarily for the use of students. The leading principles are stated, as far as possible, without the introduction of controversial matter. At the same time, throughout the work indications are given of the points still in dispute and of the difficulties involved in the further development of the principles and theories of which an elementary exposition is given. The work is based on the "Principles of Political Economy" (3 vols.) by the same author. It is, however, not simply an abstract. In the first four books the material used has been almost entirely recast. In the last book it was thought better to omit certain topics altogether rather than attempt any further condensation of the argument. In order to keep the volume within reasonable limits the greater part of the historical matter which forms a characteristic feature of the larger work has been excluded, though the results of the application of the historical method have been retained. Little space also was available for the history of economic thought and doctrines. In the text, however, the importance of these and other omitted topics has been emphasised, and the student is recommended throughout to supplement his reading by reference to special works. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Elements of Political Economy It sums up within itself the whole science of Political Economy. To settle it on truly scientific principles, to arrive at the true method of controlling it, demands the investigation and settlement of the mean ing of every single term in the science. Hume says, that the whole end of civil government is for the adminis tration of justice between man and man, so we may say, that the whole end of Political Economy is to regulate the currency. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Elements of Political Economy: With Some Applications to Questions of the Day With the assumption that Political Economy is inhuman and pitiless, the reader will find no sym pathy in these pages, because such a belief is founded on an inadequate understanding of what the principles of a science really are, and principles can not be regarded as having personal qualities. On the contrary, it seems clear that the funda mental principles of economics are, when ultimate ly analyzed, but expressions of Christian truth. With this conviction, the labor problem has been here treated, not as a question to be settled by legislation, but as one to be met by all the forces which make for Christian character and self mastery. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Natural Elements: Political Economy The object of this treatise may, perhaps, be best explained by pointing to a passage in the history of philosophy, which, frequently as it has been referred to, has always proved a trustworthy exponent of the principles of scientific discovery. When the astronomers of the Ptolemaic school undertook to explain the courses of the heavenly bodies, they taught "that the real motions of such beautiful and divine objects must necessarily be perfectly regular, and go on in a manner as agreeable to the imagination as the objects themselves are to the senses." Book excerpt: Excerpt from Disturbing Elements in the Study and Teaching of Political Economy The following lectures were delivered in the Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore, April 25-29, 1910, to the Economic Seminary, at whose desire, by the courtesy of the University, they are now printed. As the title suggests, they are discourses not on economic error in general, but on the more subtle fallacies which are apt to invade the reasoning of trained economists in spite of learning and discipline. Such errors creep in from a popular political philosophy (Lecture I), from want of any political philosophy (II), from mistaken aversion to theory (III), from the shortcomings of common or technical language (IV), and from the wrong handling of distinctions of time (V). Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Elements of Social Science and Political Economy, Especially for Use in Colleges, Schools, Clubs, Guilds, &C The favour of the public towards this little book was so great that certainly I should not have dared to expect it. In particular, our venerable seminaries opened their doors kindly to the work. That I am content, all will readily believe. But the reason why I am content, at least the principal reason, will not perhaps be believed by all. No matter I shall mention it just the same. The cordial welcome given to the book is a sure proof to me that the minds of Catholics, of young Levites, feel the need of quenching their thirst with the water of new ideas - those ideas of which the lamented Leo XIII. Was the indefatigable and authoritative advocate. To see souls rushing towards the light is always a consolation; much more, when we are convinced that that light is indispensably necessary for the age in which we live. Meanwhile, the Pope, who blessed this little work when it was first timidly presented to the public, has gone to Heaven. And I, while I prepare this new edition, turn my eyes towards the Chair of Peter, but see him there no more. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Can national growth be sustained indefinitely? How much should government intervene in a competitive market economy? The questions John Stuart Mill raised a century and a half ago, in 1848's Principles of Political Economy, and the answers he found, are just as critical-and just as contentiously debated-today. Through a lens of what the philosopher himself termed "philosophical radicalism"-and what some today call "democratic liberalism"-Mill takes a fresh look at Adam Smith's Wealth of Nations and other influential works of political thought of his time, and recasts them from a more scientific viewpoint, suggesting that such realities as the unequal distribution of wealth were not "natural" but rather a matter of human choice... choices we continue to have to make in our ever more complicated economy. Also available from Cosimo Classics: Selected Writings of John Stuart Mill and On Liberty. English philosopher and politician JOHN STUART MILL (1806-1873) was one of the foremost figure of Western intellectual thought in the late 19th century. He served as an administrator in the East Indian Company from 1823 to 1858, and as a member of parliament from 1865 to 1868. Among his essays on a wide range of political and social thought are On Liberty (1859), Considerations on Representative Government (1861), and The Subjection of Women (1869).
