Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elements of Physiophilosophy IT is with no readiness or pleasure that I write introductions of any kind, and usually abstain from doing so, partly because they appear to me like a kind of apology or makeshift for the author, and partly because the contents of the book itself should indicate his status or position. With regard, however, to the history of the work, some few words are certainly requisite for its Translation. Book Synopsis Sounding the Limits of Life by : Stefan Helmreich
Download or read book Sounding the Limits of Life written by Stefan Helmreich and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2015-10-27 with total page 325 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is life? What is water? What is sound? In Sounding the Limits of Life, anthropologist Stefan Helmreich investigates how contemporary scientists—biologists, oceanographers, and audio engineers—are redefining these crucial concepts. Life, water, and sound are phenomena at once empirical and abstract, material and formal, scientific and social. In the age of synthetic biology, rising sea levels, and new technologies of listening, these phenomena stretch toward their conceptual snapping points, breaching the boundaries between the natural, cultural, and virtual. Through examinations of the computational life sciences, marine biology, astrobiology, acoustics, and more, Helmreich follows scientists to the limits of these categories. Along the way, he offers critical accounts of such other-than-human entities as digital life forms, microbes, coral reefs, whales, seawater, extraterrestrials, tsunamis, seashells, and bionic cochlea. He develops a new notion of "sounding"—as investigating, fathoming, listening—to describe the form of inquiry appropriate for tracking meanings and practices of the biological, aquatic, and sonic in a time of global change and climate crisis. Sounding the Limits of Life shows that life, water, and sound no longer mean what they once did, and that what count as their essential natures are under dynamic revision.

Book Synopsis Science in the Romantic Era by : David Knight
Download or read book Science in the Romantic Era written by David Knight and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-03-31 with total page 401 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1998. The Romantic Era was a time when society, religion and other beliefs, and science were all in flux. The idea that the universe was a great clock, and that men were little clocks, all built by a divine watchmaker, was giving way to a more dynamic and pantheistic way of thinking. A new language was invented for chemistry, replacing metaphor with algebra; and scientific illustration came to play the role of a visual language, deeply involved with theory. A scientific community came gradually into being as the 19th century wore on. The papers which compose this book have appeared in a wide range of books and journals; together with the new introduction they illuminate science and its context in the Romantic Era and follow its effects in the 19th century.

Book Synopsis The Concept of Nature in Classical German Philosophy by : Luis Fellipe Garcia
Download or read book The Concept of Nature in Classical German Philosophy written by Luis Fellipe Garcia and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2024-12-02 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Classical German Philosophy has traditionally been understood as the period in the history of ideas in which the investigation of the human mind takes precedence over the investigation of the natural world. This assessment has a twofold consequence. On the one hand, the philosophy of the period has been praised for its contributions to our understanding of multiple expressions of human rationality such as history, art, and religion. On the other hand, such a philosophy has been criticized for its obscure speculations alien to the standards of modern scientific cognition. The philosophy of nature developed at the time has been accordingly dismissed as a piece of outdated metaphysics. Challenging this view, the contributions collected in this book argue for the historical and contemporary relevance of the approaches to nature formulated at the time.

Bercaw's Melville's Sources is a checklist, keyed to Melville's works, of every source suggested by scholars to have been used by Melville. In contrast to similar references, this volume relies not only on evidence of possession by the author, but on such so-called internal evidence as direct references and parallel passages. For each source listed, Bercaw cites the work or works in which Melville is thought to have used it and every reviewer, critic, or scholar who has made the attribution.
