Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Elements of Physics, Vol. 3 of 3: A College Text-Book Sensory nerves. - The sensory nerves of the human body lead from regions near the surface of the body to the central organs of the nervous system. The outer ends of these nerves are exposed in such a way as to be excited or set into commotion by physical disturbances in the region surrounding the body. This commotion is transmitted to the central organs producing commotion there, and we perceive what we call a sensation. The physical disturbance which excites a nerve is called a stimulus. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Elements of Physics, Vol. 1 of 3: A College d104-Book The beginner in Physics, if he is to be well taught, must study a text-book which contains concise statements of physical laws and a systematic development of. Principles. He must attend lectures or demonstrations in which the phenomena are shown, and finally he must enter the laboratory and make physical measurements. The present book deals only with the first part of this triple course of instruction. It differs in certain respects from many books which have been written for beginners. Descriptions of the numerous phenomena with which it is necessary for the student to become acquainted have been largely omitted; the assumption being that the study of the text will always be accompanied by, and indeed be supplementary to, a course of carefully arranged and fully illustrated lectures. A knowledge of the elements of the calculus, the natural language of physics, has been taken for granted, but the degree of mathematical experience of the undergraduate reader, necessarily limited, has been kept in view and the various proofs and the demonstra tions have been given the simplest possible form. The concepts of directed and of distributed quantity, which are no less important to the student of physics than are the methods of the calculus, are briefly treated in Chapter II. Of Volume I. And in Chapter I. Of Volume II., respectively, and are used upon occasion throughout the text. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Elements of Physics, Vol. 2 of 3: A College Text-Book; Electricity and Magnetism A distributed scalar is a scalar quantity used to specify: the condition or state of a medium. Such a quantity has, in general, a distinct value for each small part of the medium. Homogeneous or uniform distribution occurs when the quantity has the same value for all parts of the medium; otherwise the distribution is said to be non-homogeneous. (see Art. 26, Vol. I.) Many of the geometrical conceptions arising from the consideration of dis tributed quantity, particularly of distributed vectors, are of great importance in the theory of electricity and magnetism. A discussion of distributed quantity is therefore given as an introduction to the present volume. The student should, at starting, read as much as possible of this introduction, dropping it whenever any serious difficulty is encountered to take it up again and again during the progress of his work upon the main portion of the text. Most of the definitions concerning distributed scalars and vectors are seen to be legitimate, p/zysiazl continuity being assumed, and such proofs as do not make use of Cartesian coo'rdinates are rigorous. The introduction of Cartesian coordinates for the purpose of formulating definitions and proving theorems, to be rigorous, must be accompanied by very elaborate proof in each case that the choice of axes is a matter of indifference. Such Cartesian expressions and developments as are herein given are known to be true, but their use here is more of the nature of exposition than of proof The student who wishes to read extensively must be familiar with these Cartesian expressions. Is the etherial power which affects all our senses, and which produces the most varied results in its influence on all bodies whatever it is diffused thoughout the globe, and resides in all terrestrial substances. As yet, it has not been ascertained whether its presence is confined to our planet, or whether it exists thoughout the universe. Its presence is generally not perceptible in bodies, which are then said to be in a state of electrical quiescence. It is not, how ever, to be considered as certain, that electricity in this condition exerts absolutely no influence at all. Book excerpt: University Physics is a three-volume collection that meets the scope and sequence requirements for two- and three-semester calculus-based physics courses. Volume 1 covers mechanics, sound, oscillations, and waves. Volume 2 covers thermodynamics, electricity and magnetism, and Volume 3 covers optics and modern physics. This textbook emphasizes connections between between theory and application, making physics concepts interesting and accessible to students while maintaining the mathematical rigor inherent in the subject. Frequent, strong examples focus on how to approach a problem, how to work with the equations, and how to check and generalize the result. The text and images in this textbook are grayscale.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book on Advance Elements of Laser circuits and systems Nonlinearity applications in engineering addresses two separate engineering and scientific areas, and presents advanced analysis methods for Laser circuits and systems that cover a broad range of engineering and scientific applications. The book analyzed Laser circuits and systems as linear and nonlinear dynamical systems and there limit cycles, bifurcation, and limit cycle stability by using nonlinear dynamic theory. Further, it discussed a broad range of bifurcations related to Laser systems and circuits, starting from laser system differential equations and their bifurcations, delay differential equations (DDEs) are a function of time delays, delay dependent parameters, followed by phase plane analysis, limit cycles and their bifurcations, chaos, iterated maps, period doubling. It combines graphical information with analytical analysis to effectively study the local stability of Laser systems models involving delay dependent parameters. Specifically, the stability of a given steady state is determined by the graphs of some functions of which can be expressed explicitly. The Laser circuits and systems are Laser diode circuits, MRI system Laser diode circuitry, Electron-photon exchanges into VCSEL, Ti: Sapphire laser systems, Ion channel and long-wavelength lasers, Solid state lasers, Solid state laser controlled by semiconductor devices, microchip solid-state laser, Q-switched diode-pumped solid-state laser, Nd:YAG, Mid-Infrared and Q-switched microchip lasers, Gas laser systems, copper vapor laser (CVL) circuitry, Dual-wavelength laser systems, Dual-wavelength operation of a Ti:sapphire laser, Diode-pumped Q-switched Nd:YVO4 yellow laser, Asymmetric dual quantum well lasers, Tm3+-doped silica fibre lasers, Terahertz dual-wavelength quantum cascade laser. The Book address also the additional areas, Laser X guiding system, Plasma diagnostics, Laser Beam shaping, Jitter and crosstalk, Plasma mirror systems, and High power Laser/Target diagnostic system optical elements. The book is unique in its emphasis on practical and innovative engineering and scientific applications. All conceptual Laser circuits are innovative and can be broadly implemented in many engineering applications. The dynamics of Laser circuits and systems provides several ways to use them in a variety of applications covering wide areas. This book is aimed at electrical and electronics engineers, students and researchers in physics as well. It is also aimed for research institutes in lasers and plasma physics and gives good comprehensive in laser and plasma systems. In each chapter, the concept is developed from basic assumptions up to the final engineering and scientific outcomes. The scientific background is explained at basic and advance levels and closely integrated with mathematical theory. Many examples are presented in this book and it is also ideal for intermediate level courses at graduate level studies. It is also ideal for engineer who has not had formal instruction in nonlinear dynamics, but who now desires to fill the gap between innovative Laser circuits/systems and advance mathematical analysis methods
