Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elements of Mineralogy In the preparation of the revised edition of this book, it has been considered advantageous to make somewhat fundamental alterations in several places. The advance of Mineralogy in recent years, the changed points of view of economic mineralogists, and the needs of the present-day student, have all been deemed to justify such changes; indeed, one indication of the need for some such revision was shown in the ever-increasing collection of appendices that were to be found in the former editions. Nevertheless, it has been the reviser's endeavour to conserve as much as possible of the original, and all alterations have been carefully considered. Part I. treats of the Properties of Minerals. The original chapter on Crystallography has been entirely rewritten, and a chapter on Optical Properties has been added, which, it is hoped, will be found useful to the student. Part II. consists of the description of Mineral Species. Here the original arrangement has been followed, except in regard to the silicates. New introductions to the elements have been given; specially important among these are introductions to the principal metals, which, together with certain statistics, have been supplied by Mr. W. G. Wagner. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Find more at www.forgottenbooks.com This book is a reproduction of an important historical work. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Minerals, and How to Study Them: A Book for Beginners in Mineralogy The author has occupied some hours, which could not be devoted to more serious labor, in preparing this little book, in the hope that it might server to encourage those who have a desire to learn about minerals, and also to increase the number of those tastes may lead them in this direction. He shares with most teachers at the present time the conviction that the cultivation of the powers of observation is a most essential element in the education of young people of both sexes; he believes, further, that no subject is better fitted to accomplish this object and at the same time to excite active interest than that of Mineralogy. The attempt has been made to present the whole subject in a clear, simple, and, so far as possible, a readable form without too much detail and at the same time without cheapening the science. As the understanding of the different parts of the subject requires some preliminary knowledge of physics and of chemistry, a little elementary matter in these departments has been introduced. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elements of Crystallography: For Students of Chemistry Physics and Mineralogy To both chemists and physicists the subject is important, although the information in regard to it embraced in text-books and lectures on chemistry and physics is usually inadequate. Crystals are constantly employed as a means of purifying, recognizing and tracing the relationships between chemical compounds of all sorts; their genesis and growth offer interesting problems in molecular physics, and their completed forms furnish material for the study of elasticity, co hesion and the propagation Of various forms of radiant energy. To the geologist in every field, as well as to the mining engineer, Crystallography is the starting-point to a knowledge of mineralogy, while to the student of petrography an acquaintance with crystal form and its relation to the Optical properties of crystals is indis pensable. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Descriptive Mineralogy The following pages are presented with the purpose of affording students a comprehensive view of modern mineralogy rather than a detailed knowledge of many minerals. The minerals selected for description are not necessarily those that are most common nor those that occur in greatest quantity. The list includes those that are of scientific interest or of economic importance, and, in addition, those that illustrate some principle employed in the classification of minerals. The volume is not a reference book. It is offered solely as a textbook. It does not pretend to furnish a complete discussion of the mineral kingdom, nor a means of determining the nature of any mineral that may be met with. The chapters devoted to the processes of determinative mineralogy are brief, and the familiar "key to the determination of species" is omitted. In place of the latter is a simple guide to the descriptions of minerals to be found in the body of the text. For more complete determinative tables the reader is referred to one of the many good books that are devoted entirely to this phase of the subject. In the descriptions of the characteristic crystals of minerals both the Naumann and the Miller systems of notation are employed, the former because of its almost general use in the more important reference books and the latter because of its almost universal use in modern crystallographic investigations. The student must be familiar with both notations. It is thought that this familiarity can be best acquired by employing the two notations side by side. In preparing the descriptive matter the author has made extensive use of Hintze's Handbuch der Mineralogie. The figures illustrating crystal forms are taken from many sources.
