The volume is not a reference book. It is offered solely as a textbook. It does not pretend to furnish a complete discussion of the mineral kingdom, nor a means of determining the nature of any mineral that may be met with. The chapters devoted to the processes of determinative mineralogy are brief, and the familiar "key to the determination of species" is omitted. In place of the latter is a simple guide to the descriptions of minerals to be found in the body of the text. For more complete determinative tables the reader is referred to one of the many good books that are devoted entirely to this phase of the subject. In the descriptions of the characteristic crystals of minerals both the Naumann and the Miller systems of notation are employed, the former because of its almost general use in the more important reference books and the latter because of its almost universal use in modern crystallographic investigations. The student must be familiar with both notations. It is thought that this familiarity can be best acquired by employing the two notations side by side.
