The chapters devoted to the causes, the symptoms, and the progress of diseases, have been subjected to important modifications, and have received considerable additions. We have given to the chapter on Diagnosis a new form and very great development the part relating to therapeutics has been greatly augmented; and we would particularly mention two articles, one, devoted to the exposition of the rules of experiment in medicine; and the other, to the examination of a question sharply contested, the application of the numerical method to pathological facts. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elements General Pathology: A Practical Treatise on the Causes, Forms, Symptoms, and Results of Disease English Medical Literature has hitherto possessed no work ex clusively devoted to General Pathology. In nearly all of the sys tematic treatises and dictionaries of medicine in our language this subject is either discussed theoretically and imperfectly, or is alto gether unnoticed. The well-known and valuable work of Dr. Williams forms scarcely an exception to this statement, for its scope not only embraces General Pathology in the proper sense, but also hygiene, prophylaxis, and therapeutics; in consequence of which extended plan the author was obliged to restrict himself to. A brief general View of Etiology, Nosology, Semeiology, Dia gnosis, and Prognosis, subjects which will be found to occupy nearly the whole of the following pages. Book excerpt: Excerpt from d104-Book of General Pathology In modern times physiology and pathology had a common starting-point in the doctrine of the cell as the ultimate unit of the animal body; but, nevertheless, they tended for many years to diverge. Physiology was concerned chiefly with certain specialized functions of cells, the phenomena of which hardly touch the problems of disease, and was hampered in its progress by the backward condition of such ancillary sciences as chemistry and physics. Pathology, greatly influenced by anatomy, was engaged with the observation of results rather than the elucidation of the underlying vital processes. Within recent years, however, the two sciences have converged again, for not only has the scope of physiological inquiry regarding the intimate processes of cellular life been broadening, but pathology, in recording such phenomena as those of perverted secretion or the effects of morbid cellular life on normal functions, has opened up new lines of inquiry for the physiologist. Disease, in fact, has often supplied physiological experiments far more delicate than any that could be performed in the laboratory. There is thus at present a constant interaction of the two sciences; the way has thus been opened up for the elucidation of the doctrine often foreshadowed by the older pathologists that the laws of disease are really the laws of health, and lack of co-ordination between the normal activities of the component tissues of the body is often the most important factor in the origin of disease. Although the establishment of these principles is still very incomplete, it has seemed to the editors of this book that the time has come for another attempt to present, as far as it may be possible, the results obtained by the two sciences in working at the problems of disease. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Manual of General Pathology: For the Use of Students and Practitioners of Medicine After perusing the fifth edition of Wagner's Pathology in 1872 I was strongly impressed with the idea that it was well worthy of reproduction in this country. N 0 book in the English language gives such a thorough résumé of the elements of medicine, and in none is the matter so arranged as to be available for both the student and the practitioner. This, the sixth German edition, is much improved, many references to publications in 1872 having been inserted; in many chapters the work is fully up to date. This elaboration is perhaps most evident in the sections on the theories of fever; where knowledge which could only be obtained by laborious work in a large city library is condensed within the compass of a few pages. I have permitted myself to make very few changes from the original; two or three pages from the sections on soil and climate, and some short paragraphs in the chapter on fever, have been omitted. A few foot-notes and bibliographical references (chiefly American), and an index of authors, have been added. My friend Dr. Van Duyn has translated at least two-thirds of the book. The proofreading and arrangement of the work have fallen to my share. In our translation we have encountered some difficulties, and those who have done the same kind of work will know how to make allowance for a num ber of awkward sentences in the English. We have endeavored to be literal and at the same time clear; and elegance of style has not been aimed at. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Compend of General Pathology IN preparing this compend the practical needs of the student have been considered, controversial matter and references to authors and articles have therefore been omitted, and the ch'ort to simplify the subject steadily maintained. The chief text-books in English, French and German have been consulted, as well as many monographs and special articles, and it is believed that nothing included will be found at variance with the text-books used in American medical colleges. Chapter VI. Is based almost wholly upon a syllabus prepared by Prof. Jas. Ewing, of Cornell Medical College, for one of his classes, and my thanks are due him for permission to use it. I am indebted also to Dr. J. C. Johnston, of the same institution, for valuable hints and for the photographs which illustrate the chapter on neoplasms. The negatives for these and for Figs. 58, 77 and 78 were made by Dr. B. H. Buxton, of Cornell, and kindly loaned by him. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Clinical Pathology This book represents an attempt to describe in a reasonable compass such laboratory investigations, whether chemical, histological or bacteriological, as have a practical bearing upon the diagnosis and treatment of disease; to give some account of their meaning, and to assess, so far as possible, their value in practice. Many of the smaller text-books of Clinical Pathology deal with the subject only in part; the complexity of methods in the larger works renders them more suitable to special investigators, and it was felt that a book of intermediate size might be of use to the student and practitioner. The reduction in size has been mainly arrived at by avoidance of a reduplication of methods, in preference to the omission of any essential branch of the subject. Where several methods for the same object are in use, one, or at most two, are described in full: the remainder are omitted altogether. Much of scientific interest has been necessarily sacrificed to the practical application of diagnostic methods, and the book has consequently no pretensions to consideration as anything more than an adjunct to clinical medicine. No list of references is given, and the names of authorities, unless definitely associated with a particular reaction, are for the most part omitted. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Elements of Surgical Pathology: With Therapeutic Hints The organism being completed, no matter what its grade as to complexity, it is unstable This instability is essential, and well understood. Work is accomplished at the expense of material. The molecules, yes the atoms of the tissues, are constantly wearing out or forming new combinations and their places filled by new ones. This constant loss, the so-called molecular death, is not uniform, either with reference to periods of life, or day by day. In a general way, repair Of waste exceeds loss during the growing years of the organ, ism; say from birth to full maturity, or the age of thirty or perhaps forty; the relation becomes somewhat disturbed towards the end of this period, or the last ten or fifteen years, For a longer or shorter time there is an equilibrium, or if loss exceeds repair it is not appreciable. After this, loss rapidly exceeds repair and soon the mere molecular death becomes a dissolution of the organism, or somatic death. During all these periods, again, the relation of waste and repair depends upon bodily conditions and environment; extreme changes of tem perature, bodily exertion, the occurrence Of disease or accident, all increase, for the time being, the waste, which is to be made good by periods of rest, under normal conditions. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elements of General and Pathological Anatomy: Presenting a View of the Present State of Knowledge in These Branches of Science It is almost superfluous to enter into any detailed account of the principles on which this work is composed. In describing both the sound and morbid states of the different organic tissues, I have in general indicated the sources of my information. On the subject of the normal or healthy states, without neglecting the labours of previous authors, it has been my study to give accurate descriptions of the objects from frequent and careful personal dissection. What ever I have stated on my own authority has been from repeated and rather elaborate examination; and if I have erred or misrepresent ed, it is not from carelessness or indifference in the endeavour to insure accuracy. In describing the pathological changes incident to each tissue, it has been my study not so much to Speak from personal observation, as to generalize with fidelity the results of the researches of others. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elements of Pathological Anatomy The present edition of this work has been materially modified, and fully brought up, in so far at least as appertains to what may be considered as really worthy of acceptance, to the existing state of the science of which it treats. All that related to histology and diag nosis, in the preceding edition, has been omitted in this; many para graphs, and Often whole pages, have been rewritten; and a consider able amount Of new matter has been introduced. While the general arrangement remains the same, the various topics embraced in the work have been more thoroughly systematized, and, wherever it was practicable, the language has been rendered more concise and terse. One hundred and thirty new cuts have been added. They were drawn, for the most part, from my own specimens, and under my immediate superintendence, by Mr. Daniels, and engraved by Mr. Baxter. These, added to those in the former edition, make the num ber of original cuts nearly two hundred. The remainder have been copied from various sources, as Reynaud, Marcet, Lawrence, Miller, Curling, Churchill, Bird, and others. Not a few of the figures thus borrowed have become, as it were, the common property of the pro fession, and are no longer traceable to their respective authors. With the many changes and improvements now introduced, the work may be regarded almost as a new treatise.
