Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Elements of Descriptive Geometry Intersections, developments, etc., are usually included in the regular course in Mechanical Draw ing. It seems needless, therefore, to include them in this elementary text. If it is desirable to include more advanced work in the course of Descriptive Geometry, this book will form such a foundation that the student may readily interpret any higher treatise. H. C. B. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elements of Descriptive Geometry: With Applications to Isometric Projection and Other Forms of One-Plane Projection The aim of this treatise is to make a clear presentation of the theory of projection, to show the application of this theory as a medium of expression, and by the discussion and proof of a great variety of problems to enable the student to make a ready and intelligent use of this medium in the representation of all forms of magnitudes. As by far the greater part of practical drafting is done from the standpoint of the third quadrant, there seems to be no good reason why the principles of descriptive geometry, which are so directly and extensively applied in practice, should not also be presented from the standpoint of the same quadrant. Therefore, while the student is called upon to work freely in all the four quadrants, the subject-matter is presented primarily from the third quadrant. In the establishment of principles great effort is made to be explicit; but in the application of these principles, for which purpose a great many unsolved problems are assigned, the student is left largely to his own resources. As the principles of projection are fundamental in all branches of drafting, it follows that no attempt at extensive application of these principles in such subjects as machine drawing, gearing, architectural drawing, etc., should be made until the principles themselves have been thoroughly established. For this reason the attention of this work is largely confined to theoretical considerations, although a number of simple practical applications such as the student can safely and intelligently make are introduced. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Essentials of Descriptive Geometry IT has been the endeavor Of the author in writing this text to include only those portions Of descriptive geometry which possess industrial utility and which develop the qualities Of mind so essential in a draftsman. First and foremost descriptive geometry should aim to teach projection. A draftsman must be able both to read and to write drawings with facility, and projection is the very grammar Of the language Of the designer. Secondly, descriptive geometry should aim to develop the ability to solve problems concerning the relations Of points, lines, and planes. These are, of course, but elementary parts Of all engineering structures as shown on drawings and it is important that a draftsman be prepared to solve problems relating to them directly on the drawing board. Thirdly, and perhaps most important Of all, descriptive geometry should aim to promote the ability to analyse a problem into its component parts, to reason from a given set Of conditions to a required set Of conclusions, and to build up from the drawing a mental picture of the Object which is there represented, for Without the ability to analyse, to reason, and to Visualize a draftsman is lacking in the essential qualifications of his calling. Book excerpt: The experience developed by Ian McHarg represents the first attempt to base environmental planning on more objective methods. In particular, he supposed that the real world can be considered as a layer cake and each layer represents a sectoral analysis. This metaphor represents the fundamental of overlay mapping. At the beginning, these principles have been applied only by hand, just considering the degree of darkness, produced by layer transparency, as a negative impact. In the following years, this craftmade approach, has been adopted for data organization in Geographical Information Systems producing analyses with a high level of quality and rigour. Nowadays, great part of studies in environmental planning field have been developed using GIS. The next step relative to the simple use of geographic information in supporting environmental planning is the adoption of spatial simulation models, which can predict the evolution of phenomena. As the use of spatial information has definitely improved the quality of data sets on which basing decision-making process, the use of Geostatistics, spatial simulation and, more generally, geocomputation methods allows the possibility of basing the decision-making process on predicted future scenarios. It is very strange that a discipline such as planning which programs the territory for the future years in great part of cases is not based on simulation models. Sectoral analyses, often based on surveys, are not enough to highlight dynamics of an area. Better knowing urban and environmental changes occurred in the past, it is possible to provide better simulations to predict possible tendencies. The aim of this book is to provide an overview of the main methods and techniques adopted in the field of environmental geocomputation in order to produce a more sustainable development.

Book excerpt: Francis Palmer Smith was the principal designer of Atlanta-based Pringle and Smith, one of the leading firms of the early twentieth-century South. Smith was an academic eclectic who created traditional, history-based architecture grounded in the teachings of the cole des Beaux-Arts. As The Architecture of Francis Palmer Smith shows, Smith was central to the establishment of the Beaux-Arts perspective in the South through his academic and professional career. After studying with Paul Philippe Cret at the University of Pennsylvania, Smith moved to Atlanta in 1909 to head the new architecture program at the Georgia Institute of Technology. He would go on to train some of the South's most significant architects, including Philip Trammell Shutze, Flippen Burge, Preston Stevens, Ed Ivey, and Lewis E. Crook Jr. In 1922 Smith formed a partnership with Robert S. Pringle. In Atlanta, Savannah, Chattanooga, Jacksonville, Sarasota, Miami, and elsewhere, Smith built office buildings, hotels, and Art Deco skyscrapers; buildings at Georgia Tech, the Baylor School in Chattanooga, and the Darlington School in Rome, Georgia; Gothic Revival churches; standardized bottling plants for Coca-Cola; and houses in a range of traditional "period" styles in the suburbs. Smith's love of medieval architecture culminated with his 1962 masterwork, the Cathedral of St. Philip in Atlanta. As his career drew to a close, Modernism was establishing itself in America. Smith's own modern aesthetic was evidenced in the more populist modern of Art Deco, but he never embraced the abstract machine aesthetic of high Modern. Robert M. Craig details the role of history in design for Smith and his generation, who believed that architecture is an art and that ornament, cultural reference, symbolism, and tradition communicate to clients and observers and enrich the lives of both. This book was supported, in part, by generous grants from the Graham Foundation for Advanced Studies in the Fine Arts and the Georgia Tech Foundation, Inc.
