Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Elements of Applied Mathematics Including Kinetics, Statics: And Hydrostatics It is designed mainly for use in Schools and for various public examinations, and I am not Without hope that the explanation of the principles of the subject herein contained is sufficiently detailed to render it valuable to private students who are not in a position to obtain much assistance from teachers. I have adopted the arrangement, which is now generally approved, of considering successively kinematics, kinetics, and forces in equilibrium. The chief innovation is the introduction of a separate chapter on Graphical Statics. Throughout, the C. G. S. System has been treated side by side with the foot-lb.-sec. System. Book excerpt: Applied Mathematics: Made Simple provides an elementary study of the three main branches of classical applied mathematics: statics, hydrostatics, and dynamics. The book begins with discussion of the concepts of mechanics, parallel forces and rigid bodies, kinematics, motion with uniform acceleration in a straight line, and Newton's law of motion. Separate chapters cover vector algebra and coplanar motion, relative motion, projectiles, friction, and rigid bodies in equilibrium under the action of coplanar forces. The final chapters deal with machines and hydrostatics. The standard and content of the book covers C.S.E. and 'O' level G.C.E. examinations in Applied Mathematics and Mechanics as well as the relevant parts of the syllabuses for Physics and General Science courses related to Engineering, Building, and Agriculture. The book is also written for the home study reader who is interested in widening his mathematical appreciation or simply reviving forgotten ideas. The author hopes that the style of presentation will be found sufficiently attractive to recapture those who may at one time have lost interest.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elements of Applied Mathematics This book of problems is the result of four years' experimentation in the endeavor to make the instruction in mathematics of real service in the training of pupils for their future work. There is at the present time a widespread belief among teachers that the formal, abstract, and purely theoretical portions of algebra and geometry have been unduly emphasized. Moreover, it has been felt that mathematics is not a series of discrete subjects, each in turn to be studied and dropped without reference to the others or to the mathematical problems that arise in the shops and laboratories. Hence we have attempted to relate arithmetic, algebra, geometry, and trigonometry closely to each other, and to connect all our mathematics with the work in the shops and laboratories. This has been done largely by lists of problems based on the preceding work in mathematics and on the work in the shops and laboratories, and by simple experiments and exercises in the mathematics classrooms, where the pupil by measuring and weighing secures his own data for numerical computations and geometrical constructions. In high schools where it is possible for the teachers to depart from traditional methods, although they must hold to a year of algebra and a year of geometry, this book of problems can be used to make a beginning in the unification of mathematics, and to make a test of work in applied problems. In the first year in algebra the problems in Chapters I-VII can be used to replace much of the abstract, formal, and lifeless material of the ordinary course. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Principles of Applied Mathematics provides a comprehensive look at how classical methods are used in many fields and contexts. Updated to reflect developments of the last twenty years, it shows how two areas of classical applied mathematics spectral theory of operators and asymptotic analysis are useful for solving a wide range of applied science problems. Topics such as asymptotic expansions, inverse scattering theory, and perturbation methods are combined in a unified way with classical theory of linear operators. Several new topics, including wavelength analysis, multigrid methods, and homogenization theory, are blended into this mix to amplify this theme. This book is ideal as a survey course for graduate students in applied mathematics and theoretically oriented engineering and science students. This most recent edition, for the first time, now includes extensive corrections collated and collected by the author.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elements of the Differential, and Integral Calculus (Revised: Edition) That teachers and students of the Calculus have shown such a generous appreciation of Granville's "Elements of the Differential and Integral Calculus" has been very gratifying to the author. In the last few years considerable progress has been made in the teaching of the elements of the Calculus, and in this revised edition of Granville's "Calculus" the latest and best methods are exhibited, - methods that have stood the test of actual classroom work. Those features of the first edition which contributed so much to its usefulness and popularity have been retained. The introductory matter has been cut down somewhat in order to get down to the real business of the Calculus sooner. As this is designed essentially for a drill book, the pedagogic principle that each result should be made intuitionally as well as analytically evident to the student has been kept constantly in mind. The object is not to teach the student to rely on his intuition, but, in some cases, to use this faculty in advance of analytical investigation. Graphical illustration has been drawn on very liberally. This Calculus is based on the method of limits and is divided into two main parts, - Differential Calculus and Integral Calculus. As special features, attention may be called to the effort to make perfectly clear the nature and extent of each new theorem, the large number of carefully graded exercises, and the summarizing into working rules of the methods of solving problems. In the Integral Calculus the notion of integration over a plane area has been much enlarged upon, and integration as the limit of a summation is constantly emphasized. The existence of the limit e has been assumed and its approximate value calculated from its graph. A large number of new examples have been added, both with and without answers. At the end of almost every chapter will be found a collection of miscellaneous examples. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Focusing on one of the main pillars of mathematics, Elements of Real Analysis provides a solid foundation in analysis, stressing the importance of two elements. The first building block comprises analytical skills and structures needed for handling the basic notions of limits and continuity in a simple concrete setting while the second component involves conducting analysis in higher dimensions and more abstract spaces. Largely self-contained, the book begins with the fundamental axioms of the real number system and gradually develops the core of real analysis. The first few chapters present the essentials needed for analysis, including the concepts of sets, relations, and functions. The following chapters cover the theory of calculus on the real line, exploring limits, convergence tests, several functions such as monotonic and continuous, power series, and theorems like mean value, Taylor's, and Darboux's. The final chapters focus on more advanced theory, in particular, the Lebesgue theory of measure and integration. Requiring only basic knowledge of elementary calculus, this textbook presents the necessary material for a first course in real analysis. Developed by experts who teach such courses, it is ideal for undergraduate students in mathematics and related disciplines, such as engineering, statistics, computer science, and physics, to understand the foundations of real analysis.

The Table of Contents, by collecting into one view the headings of the various Chapters and Sections, may suffice to give, to readers already acquainted with the subject, a notion of the course pursued: but it seems proper to offer here a few introductory remarks, especially as regards the method of exposition, which it has been thought convenient on this occasion to adopt. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objective of this book is to analyze within reasonable limits (it is not a treatise) the basic mathematical aspects of the finite element method. The book should also serve as an introduction to current research on this subject. On the one hand, it is also intended to be a working textbook for advanced courses in Numerical Analysis, as typically taught in graduate courses in American and French universities. For example, it is the author’s experience that a one-semester course (on a three-hour per week basis) can be taught from Chapters 1, 2 and 3 (with the exception of Section 3.3), while another one-semester course can be taught from Chapters 4 and 6. On the other hand, it is hoped that this book will prove to be useful for researchers interested in advanced aspects of the numerical analysis of the finite element method. In this respect, Section 3.3, Chapters 5, 7 and 8, and the sections on “Additional Bibliography and Comments should provide many suggestions for conducting seminars.

The fact that the earlier discoveries in the theory of numbers were made inductively inspires the belief that such discoveries may also be made in the higher theory, if a sufficient amount of numerical, material be at hand.
