La chimie n'est pas moins necessaire pour l'etude des fonctions physiologiques. La physiologie n'est pas moins une chimie appliquee qu'une physique appliquee. C'est ce que permettent bien de reconnaitre maintes designations, telles que biochimie, zoochimie, ou chimie animale, phytochimie ou chimie vegetale. L'etude chimique des tissus s'appelle histochimie, celle des nerfs neurochi mie, celle des muscles myochimie, celle de l'urine urochimie, celle du substratum des pro cessus psychiques, psychochimie. La biochimie se divise en deux parties elle isole d'abord les elements et les combinaisons chimiques pre existantes dans les etres vivants, puis elle etudie leur formation, leur action reciproque et leur decomposition dans les corps vivants. Cette derniere etude est l'oeuvre propre de la chimie physiologique qui, si l'onyajoute la chimie patho logique, qui traite des modifications chimiques causees par les maladies, prend le nom de chi mie medicale. La physiologie pure, puisqu'elle etudieles changements chimiques que presentent les phenomenes vitaux, est donc souvent elle meme chimie physiologique. Mais son oeuvre caracteristique consiste dans la chimie et la physique reunies des corps vivants et de toutes leurs parties.
