Book excerpt: This book is a sequel to my Chemical Thermodynamics: A Prob lems Approach published in 1967, which concerned classical thermodynamics almost exclusively. Most books on statistical thermodynamics now available are written either for the superior general chemistry student or for the specialist. The author has felt the need for a text which would bring the intermediate reader to the point where he could not only appreciate the roots of the subject but also have some facility in calculating thermodynamic quantities. Although statistical thermodynamics comprises an essential part of the college training of a chemist, its treatment in general physical chem istry texts is, of necessity, compressed to the point where the less competent student is unable to appreciate or comprehend its logic and beauty, and is reduced to memorizing a series of formulas. It has been my aim to fill this need by writing a logical account of the foundations and applications of the sub ject at a level which can be grasped by an undergraduate who has had some exposure to calculus and to the basic concepts of classical thermodynamics. It can serve as a text or supple mentary reading for a course, or provide the means whereby one could become conversant with the subject on his own, without the benefit of an instructor.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elementary Principles in Statistical Mechanics: Developed With Special Reference to the Rational Foundations of Thermodynamics The laws of thermodynamics, as empirically determined, express the approximate and probable behavior of systems of a great number of particles, or, more precisely, they express the laws of mechanics for such systems as they appear to beings who have not the fineness of perception to enable them to appreciate quantities of the order of magnitude of those which relate to single particles, and who cannot repeat their experiments often enough to obtain any but the most probable results. The laws of statistical mechanics apply to conservative systems of any number of degrees of freedom. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Elementary Treatise on Dynamics: Containing Applications to Thermodynamics, With Numerous Examples Although in recent years several important works on Dynamics have been published in England, yet none have been issued which seem to fill the role contemplated in this book. In its composition we have started from the most ele mentary conceptions, so that any Student who is acquainted with the conditions of Equilibrium and with the notation of the Calculus can commence the Treatise without requiring the previous study of any other work on the subject. The first half contains a tolerably full treatment of what is usually styled the Dynamics of a Particle. The latter half treats of the Kinematics and Kinetics of Rigid Bodies; and throughout we have kept the practical nature of the subject in view, and have, in general, avoided purely fancy problems. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Treatise on Thermodynamics The oft-repeated requests either to publish my collected papers on Thermodynamics, or to work them up into a comprehensive treatise, first suggested the writing of this book. Although the first plan would have been the simpler, especially as I found no occasion to make any important changes in the line of thought of my original papers, yet I decided to rewrite the whole subject-matter, with the intention of giving at greater length, and with more detail, certain general considerations and demonstraé tions too concisely expressed in these papers. My chief reason, however, was that an opportunity was thus offered of presenting the entire field of Thermodynamics from a uniform point of view. This, to be sure, deprives the work of the character of an original contribution to science, and stamps it rather as an introductory text-book on Thermo dynamics for students who have taken elementary courses in Physics and Chemistry, and are familiar with the elements of the Differential and Integral Calculus. Book excerpt: The laws of thermodynamics are amongst the most assured and wide-ranging of all scientific laws. They do not pretend to explain any observation in molecular terms but, by showing the necessary relationships between different physical properties, they reduce otherwise disconnected results to compact order, and predict new effects. This classic title, first published in 1957, is a systematic exposition of principles, with examples of applications, especially to changes of places and the conditions for stability. In all this entropy is a key concept.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elementary Treatise on Heat 1. Temperature. If we place a poker in a fire, and after some time remove it, it feels hot. The physical cause of this sensation is called heat. A piece of iron which has been exposed to the air in Britain will generally feel cold. If we hold for some time in the right hand a piece of iron which feels hot, and then grasp the right hand with the left, the left hand will experience a sensation of heat, or the right hand will feel hot to the left, and at the same time the left hand will feel cold to the right. The same will be true if we hold for some time in the right hand any other body which feels hot. The fact that the right hand feels hot to the left after holding the hot iron, while it may have felt neither hot nor cold before, proves that the hand has received heat from the iron. We therefore infer that when a body feels hot to the hand, it imparts heat to the hand while touching it. It then follows that, because the right hand feels hot to the left hand, heat must pass from the right hand to the left. But the left hand feels cold to the right hand, and associating this sensation with what we have just proved; viz., that heat passes from the right hand to the left, we infer that a body feels cold to the hand when heat passes from the hand to the body. We may arrive at the same conclusion by holding in the right hand a piece of very cold iron, after which the right hand will feel cold to the left, and the left hand warm to the right. Book excerpt: This book provides a comprehensive exposition of the theory of equilibrium thermodynamics and statistical mechanics at a level suitable for well-prepared undergraduate students. The fundamental message of the book is that all results in equilibrium thermodynamics and statistical mechanics follow from a single unprovable axiom — namely, the principle of equal a priori probabilities — combined with elementary probability theory, elementary classical mechanics, and elementary quantum mechanics.
