Effective staff development practices, the need for on-going support, and the presence of elements of diffusion are all recognized as factors that lead to higher rates of technology integration. These elements are not currently studied as a whole in research on technology education. This study sought to examine all three of these factors within a southern metropolitan school district's technology teacher development initiative. The following questions guided the research: 1. How do teachers experience the five elements of diffusion (complexity, triability, observability, relative advantage, and compatibility) in the area of technology integration in elementary schools? 2. How do teachers experience instructional technology support and the impact of support on their technology integration instruction? 3. How do teachers experience technology staff development and the impact of staff development on their classroom technology integration? Data were collected from 81 online survey participants, 16 oral interview and web log analysis participants, and an interview with the project director at the completion of the first year of a two-year initiative. Participants received updated technology tools within their classroom and were required to take technology related courses, keep web logs, and complete technology projects. Research was conducted within a mixed methods triangulation design using a pragmatic paradigm with descriptive statistics and correlations as forms of quantitative analysis and a phenomenological approach applied in qualitative analysis. Findings showed the presence of elements of diffusion and support across all data sources. Teachers' experiences with the program were positive and led to frequent and varied technology integration. Correlations indicated high levels of interrelatedness among the variables of support, elements of diffusion, and impact on instruction. Teachers reported enhanced engagement in learning among themselves and their students. The fact that teachers chose to be in the staff development program and had choices within the program to fulfill the requirements appeared to engage and motivate them. Even though teachers self-reported they were early adopters of technology, the program support structure was highly valued. The program could be used as a model for effective technology staff development.

The overarching questions that drove this study were: "How are educator's incorporating technology into their classroom? In order to gain more insight into this phenomenon, seven teachers, including general and special education, in an elementary school in central New Jersey shared their experiences of their technology integration within their classrooms as well as how they continue to develop their own technology skills. A Case Study approach was used to capture the depth of each participant's direct experiences. Throughout this study, four themes emerged: 1) 21st century technology instructional needs, 2) different levels of teacher technology knowledge, 3) lack of student technology knowledge, and 4) training and professional development needs. This national trend for preparing students for success in the 21st century has brought effective technology integration to the forefront of education improvement. Many schools turn to professional development to train teachers for technology integration. Despite its importance, the current literature has not reached a consensus about how to best address teachers' learning needs through PD. Independent schools, which are self-determining in mission and program, are not immune to the pressure from these national trends. Although independent schools educate 10% of all students in the U.S., they have been overlooked in the current literature. Little is known about PD for technology integration at independent schools, and teachers' experiences need to be studied in-depth to determine how to best meet their learning needs. This qualitative multi-case study explored seven independent school teachers' experiences with PD for technology integration, using diffusion theory as a theoretical framework. Data were collected through a survey of teacher innovativeness, classroom observations, and individual interviews. Data were analyzed using open coding and axial coding, which resulted in the identification of themes for each case and across all seven cases. The findings revealed that participants had varied experiences with PD for technology integration based on their innovativeness. This research bridges a gap in the current literature by identifying teachers' differing learning needs and by suggesting potential solutions for improving PD for technology integration.

Book excerpt: This dissertation, organized in chapter format, is comprised of a collection of case studies designed to explain why some teachers are not prepared to meet the challenges of the National Education Technology Plan despite the pervasive evidence of technology in our personal and professional lives. The first case study is the personal history of one teacher who "battles the machine" and is reluctant to alter what works in her current practice. The next chapter is a multiple case study that examines the issues and challenges experienced teachers faced in their efforts to become more fluent in the use of educational technology. Using an extensive technology related professional development event as an intervention, the study explores teachers' use of technology before and after the inservice, the role of professional development in building technology skills, and matters related to the sustainability of skills. Teachers stressed the need for ongoing support in the form of a knowledge broker to assure continued efficacy and proficiency while integrating technology into their content and their practice. The fourth chapter, after a five year lapse, revisits two teachers from the previous multiple case study and introduces a new tech savvy teacher who shares her experiences as a new integrator of technology. Self report is used to examine the issues and challenges these experienced teachers faced in their efforts to become more fluent in the use of educational technology. The teachers in this multiple case study participated in a number of technology related professional development interventions over a period of approximately four years. This chapter includes their reflections on the successes and failures as they continue to grapple with the challenges of increasing their technological, pedagogical, and content knowledge or tpack and create change in their practice. Included is an essay presenting a proposal for a framework of five phases of professional development to support the federal government policies of No Child Left Behind and the National Education Technology Plan. The framework is upheld by five principles of professional development considered crucial for effectively changing teacher practice to incorporate instructional technology into the curriculum. By superimposing these principles: duration, content, active learning, and collaboration, this essay then positions technology related professional development as ongoing with the support of professional learning communities or networks and knowledge brokers as a means of sustaining and expanding the efforts teachers make toward technology fluency. The concluding chapter discusses how education systems constrain teachers' effort or ability to changes. Recommendations are provided on how relations among teachers and institutions might be reconfigured to promote more and better professional learning and practice in technology. This dissertation examines how putting a one-to-one-device into the hands of every student directly affects the professional development needs of teachers as it relates to teachers' ability to integrate technology into their instruction. Specifically, this case study analyzes how professional development is perceived by teachers as it relates to their integration of one-to-one technology into instruction and what type of professional development teachers prefer in order to meaningfully implement one-to-one technology into their instruction. Hence, this dissertation addresses what type of technology professional development is necessary for the successful implementation of one-to-one devices. This case study looked at teacher self-efficacy in using technology during instruction, as well as the professional development needs teachers may have, which would allow for their effective integration of technology into instruction. The results indicate that if technology is an integral part of how a teacher delivers instruction, teachers then need to be empowered with the necessary professional development. After analyzing the teachers' perceptions of professional development as it related to one-to-one technology integration, the three themes that emerged from this case study were lack of structured professional development, unclear expectations, and attitudinal resistance to one-to-one device integration. This case study identified that the teachers in the study's school district lack the appropriate level of professional development to implement one-to-one technology meaningfully into their instruction. By identifying the problem and analyzing the data through an online survey and face-to-face interviews, the reader will be better able to understand why teachers may not be prepared to deliver instruction using one-to-one devices without a more defined vision from their district and technology professional development that will meet their individual needs. These findings are significant because they will help school districts plan the appropriate level and types of professional development opportunities that are needed to support their teachers in effectively implementing one-to-one technology into instruction.

Book excerpt: This study ambitiously foregrounds for Ontario school districts key elements that need to be embedded in a professional development plan in order for classroom teachers to successfully integrate technology into their classroom curriculum. The research conducted followed the case study and action research models based on my direct relationships with four teachers and their experiences in receiving professional development support in order to integrate technology into their classroom curriculum. My role in providing professional development varied in format and degree but was consistently based on the individual needs of the teacher. The individual case studies narrate each teacher's journey of professional development over the course of an academic year based on data gathered through interviews, surveys, observational field notes, and a quantified empirical rubric. Data pertaining to the professional development initiatives undertaken by several Ontario school districts is also presented. Hence, this study brings to the foreground key factors to consider when planning professional development opportunities for teachers.
