Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elementary Plant Biology In the judgment Of the authors the kind of biology most worth while for the average boy or girl of fourteen years Of age is not' one based primarily on structure. Young stu dents are naturally more interested in activities or func tions than they are in mere form or structure. Hence, if we wish to work with, rather than against the grain, we must put function in the foreground of our discussion. Every boy and girl knows, too, that both plants and animals as well as human beings must have food and drink, and that they grow and reproduce their kind. It is relatively much easier, therefore, to unify a course like this along physiological lines than on the basis of morphology, or of homologies of structure, many of which are far too complicated to be made clear to young students. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Elementary Text-Book of Botany Is also important to know What is the systematic position of each of the various plants Whose leaves afford the material for study. In a word, the student should not attempt to read the book straight through from the beginning as if it were a novel. On the contrary, he may begin With any one of the four parts as his main subject but that part must be studied in close relation with the other three parts, a procedure Which is facilitated by the large number of cross-references in the text. Plants should not be personified or endowed out right with motives; but figures of speech and para bles may often be employed to teach a lesson or to drive home a point. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elements of Plant Biology The problem, then, is to provide, under these conditions, a course of teaching which shall be as interesting as possible and shall serve to introduce the student to the fundamental facts and principles of biology, both as part of his training for life and more particularly as an introduction to the study of medicine, which, as has often been said, is really a specialised branch of applied biology. The time is past when we could hope to give the budding medical student a thorough training in elementary botany and zoology, and with the ever increasing complexity of the medical curriculum proper there is constant pressure to shorten and simplify the preparatory parts. It seems to me that biologists should yield to this pressure to a reasonable extent, and frankly ask themselves how far the things that have been traditionally taught really serve as the best introduction to biology for medical students under existing conditions. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elementary Studies in Botany A third subject of study is the work of plants. It must be remembered that plants are living things that use food, grow, and reproduce, and all this means the work of a liv ing body. The study of the structure of plants is like the study Of the parts of an engine and how they are put together, but the study of the work of plants is like the study of the engine in action. It is evident that a study of the structures of plants finds its meaning in helping one to understand the activities of plants, just as a study of the structure of the human body finds its motive in helping one to understand the human body alive and doing its work. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lessons in Elementary Biology On the other hand, the advantage to logical treatment of proceeding from the simple to the complex - of working upwards from protists to the higher plants and animals - is so immense that it is not to be abandoned without very good and sufficient reasons. In my own experience I have found that the difficulty may be largely met by a compromise, namely, by beginning the work of the class by a comparative study of one of the higher plants (flowering plant or fern) and of one of the higher animals (rabbit, frog, or crayfish). If there were no limitations as to time, and if it were possible to avoid alto gether the valley of the shadow of the coming examination, this preliminary work might be extended with advantage, and made to include a fairly complete although elementary study of animal physiology, with a minimum of anatomical detail, and a somewhat extensive study of flowering plants with special reference to their physiology and to their relations to the rest of nature. In any case by the time this introductory work is over, the student of average intelligence has overcome pre liminary difficulties, and is ready to profit by the second and more systematic part of the course in which organisms are studied in the order of increasing complexity. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Plant Studies: An Elementary Botany 1. General relations - Plants form the natural covering of the earth's surface. So generally is this true that a land surface without plants seems remarkable. Not only do plants cover the land, but they abound in waters as well, both fresh and salt waters. They are wonderfully varied in size, ranging from huge trees to forms so minute that the microscope must be used to discover them. They are also exceedingly variable in form, as may be seen by comparing trees, lilies, ferns, mosses, mushrooms, lichens, and the green thready growths (algae) found in water. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Practical Plant Biology: A Course of Elementary Lectures on the General Morphology and Physiology of Plants At the outset the use of the microscope is treated, and special consideration is given to microscopic measurement and to the reconstruction of microscopic objects in the solid. The plants chosen as subjects of study are necessarily limited in number. They have been selected, as fairly representing some of the more important subdivisions of the vegetable kingdom, and as being, at the same time, easy to procure. Attention is directed only to those points of their structure, life, history, and manner of living which are necessary in order that the student should appreciate some of the general principles of morphology, physiology, and evolution. The lectures deal first with the simpler forms, among which are to be found some of the most important so far as general biology is concerned. They then pass on to the more complicated, and gradually lead the student to some knowledge of the development, structure, and physiology of the higher plants. This deals with the life processes of plants, as absorption, transpiration, conduction, photosynthesis, nutrition, assimilation, digestion, respiration, growth, and irritability. Since protoplasm is fundamental to all the life work of the plant, this subject is dealt with first, and the student is led through the study of, and experimentation with, the simpler as well as some of the higher plants, to a general understanding of protoplasm and the special way in which it enables the plant to carry on its work and to adjust itself to the conditions of its existence. This study also serves the purpose of familiarizing the pupil with some of the lower and unfamiliar plants.
