Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The School Interests of Elizabeth: A City of New Jersey, U. S The early history of educational interests in the terri tory embracing the present city of Elizabeth, N. J., like that of many other things, is enveloped in a haze through which only occasionally can anything be clearly distinguished. The sparse population, the lack Of full public records during the settlement of the town, the absence of any organized system of public schools, the general indifference of the people in respect to education, except, of the most elementary charac ter, and the scarcity Of newspapers to record matters of lo cal interest, makes an intelligent and absolutely correct view of the Situation almost hopeless. Yet by gathering together such scattered items as have been found, a fair idea of such matters, as they existed in the days Of our forefathers, may perhaps be obtained. The settlement of the town occurred in 1664-5, and as far as I have been able to discover, there is no record What ever bearing upon the subject of education until seventeen years later. FROM THE CONSOLIDATION OF EAST AND WEST NEW JERSEY INTO A ROYAL COLONY TO THE ORGANIZATION OF A STATE. Neither East New Jersey nor West New Jersey was sufficiently extensive to remain long an independent and separate province. The proprietary body was not well fitted to undertake the political government of a territory. The proprietors chiefly resided in England and exercised their political authority through governors or lientenantgovernors who were sent over. It was impossible that such rulers could provide for their provinces the necessary protection against hostile Indians or against the jealousy and avarice of neighboring colonies. The proprietors, therefore, in 1702 voluntarily surrendered to the Crown the political powers which had been granted to them when the provinces were transferred to them by the Duke of York. They retained only the ownership of the land and trusted to the Crown for the continued possession of those civil and religious rights which they had guarded so jealously. Lord Cornbury, a cousin of Queen Anne, was appointed in 1702 as the governor of New York and of the consolidated colony of New Jersey. Neither he nor the responsible ministry of Queen Anne at this time appreciated at their true value the circumstances of this colony, nor the principles of liberty and popular independence which had been, up to this time, their most striking characteristic. Oorubury was an illiberal representative of the British aristocracy, who had not only no admiration for the brave and resolute spirit of his own country, but who came to America with a determination to impose on the colonists the worst features of his home government. The government of New Jersey, according to the plan initiated at the time of Cornbury's...
Book Synopsis Words that Make New Jersey History by : Howard L. Green
Download or read book Words that Make New Jersey History written by Howard L. Green and published by Rutgers University Press. This book was released on 1995 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Here isa unique collection of documents that spans the history of New Jersey, from the arrival of Dutch traders in the 1600s to the present. The materials touch on a range of subjects such as slavery and abolitionism, the labor movement, race and ethnic relations, and economic and environmental issues. The documents include letters, journals, pamphlets, petitions, artwork, and songs created not only by those who exercised power, but also by men and women of more humble station. Their lively accounts range from descriptions of Native Americans in the seventeenth century to Bruce Springsteen's lament about a declining factory town. New to this expanded edition is the text of former governor James McGreevey's "I am a Gay American" speech, as well as entries about the Abbott v. Burke court ruling mandating that New Jersey equalize funding of urban and suburban schools districts, sprawl and its effects on water supply, and the state's economic boom in the 1990s. A balanced survey of New Jersey's history in the context of a changing nation, this book is ideal for general readers who want to explore the primary sources of the state's past, and to U.S. history students at the high school and college levels.

This book was released on 2017-09-13 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Education in New Jersey, Vol. 23 Sir: I have the honor to submit herewith the twenty-third number of the series of contributions to American educational history prepared for the use of this Bureau under the general editorial supervision of Prof. Herbert B. Adams, of the Johns Hopkins University. The pres ent number deals with the State of New Jersey, and has been prepared under the immediate direction of Dr. David Murray, late superintend ent of education in Tokio, J apan. In the preparation of this work Dr. Murray has dwelt somewhat more extensively than usual upon the historical development of educa tion in that State. This seemed the more desirable in this early settled colony, where the motives for educational progress were to be sought in the characteristics of widely different primitive colonists. For the same reason it seemed desirable to include in the review the growth of elementary and public education as well as the institutions of secondary and higher education.
