There are many excellent works on the subject, but they are either too expensive or not simple enough for the pupils in the Technical Classes. It is necessary for a student who is to make use of Bookkeeping in Commercial life that he should have only business transactions to work out, and not complicated problems, such as are set out in some text-books. It is a notorious fact' that Bookkeeping as taught in schools is a. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elementary Book-Keeping IN writing this book we have endeavoured to produce a Work on Elementary Book-keeping which deals with the subject entirely from a practical point of view. At the same time we have written it as clearly and simply as possible in order that it can be profitably used by young students studying book keeping for the first time. We have included a good deal of matter which every young man entering business should know, which strictly does not come under the heading of book-keeping. We have done this Since it is impossible for any one to understand the principles of book-keeping without having some general knowledge of business procedure. Numerous illustrations have been included dealing with every point, and these have been purposely kept as short as possible so as to enable the student to follow them easily in reading the text. We have added an Appendix containing a series of graduated problems with key answers, which we hope will be found useful. It is with pleasure that we have to acknowledge the material assistance afforded to us by our partner Mr. A. F. Saunders, Chartered Accountant, in the preparation of this book. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elementary Book-Keeping: A Text-Book for Beginners IN a former work, Boole-keeping and Accounts, written for students of the Intermediate and Advanced grades, the author remarked that there is now no lack of competent teaching of Book-keeping on practical and modern lines for students of these grades. It is a matter of regret that the same commendation cannot be accorded to the teaching, as a Whole, in the Elementary grades. Much of the Elementary examination work of the present day shows that methods and phraseology long since obsolete in the commercial world are still widely taught. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elementary Accounting In Elementary Accounting we endeavored to show and illus trate the creation and contents of accounts, the reason for their use, and their summarization in the Balance Sheet and Profit and Loss Accounts for the purpose of showing the ultimate results. We look upon accounts as but the foundation of certain financial statements that are to be ultimately prepared therewith just like so many terra cotta blocks that are being designed and moulded into shapes so they can ultimately be assembled into a building front, a triumphal arch, or something of that sort. The size, shape, contents and design must be determined upon before the work starts, so each one will illustrate its particular idea and so that when it is combined with the other it will fit and harmonize and carry out the idea that its makers intended. This, of course, required the illustrating of trial balances and procedure incidental thereto, which we believe we have covered thoroughly. We have continued the use of the trial balance beyond the balance sheet and Profit and Loss Account stage by showing a set of branch office reports in detail. They illustrate the use of the six column trial balance as a means of controlling property and simplifying branch office control by the aid of detailed reports which connect up therewith and explain to the executives all items therein. This method of branch office control is used extensively by us wherever our clients conduct more than one office under a single executive. Graphs have been given considerable space, but we have not attempted to include anything of a purely theoretical nature. Those that we have shown are actually used in our audit reports whenever occasion warrants. We believe a valuable feature of the book will be found in the chapter on Proprietorship, where we have illustrated all the simple types of proprietorship entries, including those affecting individuals, partnerships and corporations. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Manual of Bookkeeping I have been repeatedly urged by those who have used my elementary books on Bookkeeping to write a series of advanced lessons on the same subject, and I have accordingly written this Manual for the use of Students. By Students I do not mean Examination Students exclusively. I have had these in my mind throughout, but not less so those practical Students, who are not content to keep their books in jog-trot fashion, but are willing to give time and thought to inquire into the reasons of the methods employed, and have an Open mind with respect to the constantly recurring question of the possibility of an improvement in those methods. Students of this latter class ought to be a very numerous and a continually increasing body. Official Receivers in Bankruptcy declare with wearisome iteration in how many instances faulty Bookkeeping is the cause of financial disaster, until one is tempted to cry out for a law that no one shall give or take credit who does not keep his books on sound principles. While the work does not presume any previous training or experience in bookkeeping, yet the principles are presented in such a way, the ground covered is so much more extensive than that of routine book keeping, and the assigned exercises are of such a practical character that any one with some prior knowledge of bookkeeping who desires to review the subject thoroughly would find such a knowledge of assistance and could complete the assigned work with profit. A maximum amount of practice material has been provided which may be reduced at the discretion of the instructor in order to meet the demands of his particular course or the needs of his students. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American Standard Bookkeeping: High School Edition In the first part of this work the different kinds of accounts are fully explained and exemplified. Thus made familiar with the meaning of entries in the various accounts, the pupil is prepared to do the work of the regular sets understandingly and without floundering. The book is carefully graded, and the sets furnish ample material for practice. Six price lists are furnished throughout, to facilitate inde pendent individual work. Not only is a pupil greatly aided in his study by the observation of actual specimens of bookkeeping records, but he is much influenced by all the details of their form. In this book, therefore, script specimens of all kinds are supplied in profusion, and great care has been exercised in making them models of accuracy and neatness in every particular. The work required of the pupil is designed not only to secure a broad and sound knowledge of the theory and art of bookkeeping, but also to encourage the formation of correct business habits. Nothing taught in the book will have to be unlearned later, when the pupil takes up real business life. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Everyday Bookkeeping Everyday bookkeeping presents an easy method of keeping accounts. It was prepared for the instruction of those who may desire to keep some record but who do not find the methods used in commercial bookkeeping suited to their needs. Each kind of account is treated separately, and the treatment is made elementary enough for a child to understand as soon as the matter treated comes within his or her experience. Not only is each topic treated sepa rately, but each treatment is, in the main, independent of the others. This makes it possible to take up the chapters in any order, and those who wish instruction on a particular point can get that without having to study everything up to that point. The book may thus serve as a handbook on the topics treated. There are taken up also those forms of commercial paper, such as notes, checks, and receipts, for which nearly every one has some use. The business statement is also treated. Following this there are a few exercises in which an account is to be written with each item. This gives a review and it also illustrates the principle of double entry bookkeeping. There are also given suggested forms of books with special columns. These are often convenient for accounts of limited range. Special column books are also treated, as they are extensively used in some lines of business. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Principles of Bookkeeping: Complete Course Illustrating the Journal Method of Closing the Ledger The modern business world demands of its employees economy and efficiency, and the commercial training in our schools, to be successful, must meet this demand of' the business world by texts whose value is educational as well as practical. Such a text the authors have tried to furnish in this volume. Their aim has been an elementary book which shall present a simple, practical study of the basic facts of book keeping in a manner that will command the interest of the pupil and that will impress upon his mind the methods and practices of the office as well as the duties and technical knowledge and vocabulary of the bookkeeper and the accountant. The grading and development of the work, its classification, the terms used, and the forms adopted all have the same aim, the making of an efficient, well-informed bookkeeper. To apply a principle is of far more practical value than the ability to define it, and in this text principles are described and applied by the pupils before they are formally defined for them. This inductive method, characteristic of the entire book, stimulates the pupil to think for himself and to cultivate the self-reliance and independence so univer sally demanded of him. The numerous exercises and illustrations used in the approach to a given subject, and the many and varied reviews and problems, are positive factors in appealing to and developing this independence. As a basis for the elementary work, the authors have adopted the pupil's own knowledge of simple business transactions, - the exchange of values with which he is already familiar in the buying of many of the articles used in the home. Thus the new subject is approached with confidence through well-known operations. A number of sets are arranged for business practice which may be carried out as fully as the instructor desires; for since all of this work is optional, it may be fitted to the needs of the individual class. The business practice may be omitted in any set at the discretion of the instructor. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from New Introductive Bookkeeping The book has been changed and improved in minor parts from time to time as occasion seemed to demand, and it is presented to the public with confidence that it will be found thoroughly practical, replete with the best ideas of the day on the subject, and presented in a. Logical and teachable manner. It is the design of this work that the student's mind shall be constantly directed to the matter in hand - that of learning practical bookkeeping - and not become confused by theories that can be of no possible use to him in pursuing the course of study, nor of the least value to him in after life. It has been the aim to avoid unnecessary theorizing, yet to give a competent reason for every step to be taken, in the belief that the pupil, if he have the ability to master the subject under any circum stances, will be able to secure from the explanations, and illustrations given, a thorough knowledge of the science of accounts.
