Book excerpt: The present work is based chiefly upon the Introduction to the authors Manual of Zoology, much of which is given here in an unaltered form. A considerable portion, however, of the Introduction has been here recast, whilst fully two-thirds of the work consists of new matter. Illustrations also have been introduced wherever such appeared to be necessary. Many important subjects have, of course, been necessarily treated very superficially, or altogether omitted, as unsuitable for a merely elementary work. It is hoped, however, that most of those subjects are touched upon, a knowledge of which would be useful to the student of living or extinct forms of life, or to the general reader. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lessons in Elementary Biology On the other hand, the advantage to logical treatment of proceeding from the simple to the complex - of working upwards from protists to the higher plants and animals - is so immense that it is not to be abandoned without very good and sufficient reasons. In my own experience I have found that the difficulty may be largely met by a compromise, namely, by beginning the work of the class by a comparative study of one of the higher plants (flowering plant or fern) and of one of the higher animals (rabbit, frog, or crayfish). If there were no limitations as to time, and if it were possible to avoid alto gether the valley of the shadow of the coming examination, this preliminary work might be extended with advantage, and made to include a fairly complete although elementary study of animal physiology, with a minimum of anatomical detail, and a somewhat extensive study of flowering plants with special reference to their physiology and to their relations to the rest of nature. In any case by the time this introductory work is over, the student of average intelligence has overcome pre liminary difficulties, and is ready to profit by the second and more systematic part of the course in which organisms are studied in the order of increasing complexity. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Biology IN the following pages an attempt is made to out line some of the more important principles of the science of Biology, and to illustrate in simple terms the inter-relationship of structure and function in living organisms. Since Biology is founded on Physics and Chemistry, an elementary knowledge of these sciences is presupposed, such as may be gained from a study of the volumes of this series dealing with them. Similarly, the present volume is introductory to the Primers of Zoology, Botany, and Physiology, where the fundamental principles here dealt with are treated in greater detail in special relationship to plants and animals respectively. It is quite possible that I may have omitted much that another author would have inserted, and enlarged on points which some might consider as out of place in a booklet of this size. Be that as it may, I can only hope that what I have written may prove of interest and service to those whose studies have lain in other departments of knowledge than Biology. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elementary Biology Plant, Animal, Human In the judgment of the authors the kind of biology most worth while for the average boy or girl of fourteen years of age is not one based primarily on structure. Young stu dents are naturally more interested in activities or func tions than they are in mere form or structure. Hence, if we wish to work with, rather than against the grain, we must put function in the foreground of our discussion. Every boy and girl knows, too, that both plants and animals as well as human beings must have food and drink, and that they grow and reproduce their kind. It is relatively much easier, therefore, to unify a course like this along physiological lines than on the basis of morphology, or of homologies of structure, many of which are far too complicated to be made clear to young students.
