Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Banking for Beginners The beginner in a bank usually discovers that he does not have at his command a sufficient knowledge of commercial docu ments and banking practice. Later on, also, he often realizes that he did not start out with the best principles of personal conduct or a proper atti tude or view of his own job. It is the object of this book to help the beginner in acquiring these meces sary things at the earliest possible moment. He may then become a very efficient helper within a short time. The managers of banks who are obliged to train beginners also find this to be a problem of some difficulty and considerable ex pense. It has been suggested that the training of the average beginner costs a bank a total of about two hundred dollars in the form of unearned wages at the start, valuable time consumed by the officers or men in the bank who supervise the in struction of beginners, losses through errors due to ignorance, and waste due to inefficient utiliza tion of time and energy. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elementary Banking This book is not the result of any preconceived theories on methods of education in banking. Neither does it make any pretense of being complete as to the subjects covered nor exhaustive in its treatment of them. It is based on fifteen years of practical experience, beginning with a small country bank and extending through eleven years with a large city bank. To this first-hand knowledge of the educational needs of the beginner in banking has been added four years spent in the teaching of banking subjects to young men in the various chapters of the American Institute of Banking. The subject matter presented herewith consists in the main of a series of lectures delivered to a class of younger men in New York Chapter. This book is intended for the young man just entering the bank from school and too new in the business to be able to undertake the regular Institute study course. No other text book so far as the writer knows is designed to meet this particular need. The method of treatment is to explain the underlying principles not only of bank accounting, but of the everyday transactions that are common to all forms of banking. The danger of the small bank is that it tends to narrow the horizon of the young banker, while in the large bank the beginner too often regards his institution as something inhuman that moves along as entirely independent of him or his associates as if it were a part of the solar system. Another difficulty confronting the beginner is that when he does feel the need of instruction he is apt to fall a victim to the advice of well-meaning but untrained "instructors," who attempt to teach him banking by explaining the use of accounting forms. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Theory and History of Banking Eight of the chapters were printed in 1885 for the use of classes in Harvard University, but were not then given to the public. To these have now been added an introductory chapter, a chapter on com bined reserves or the system of Clearing House loan certificates, and one on the Bank of Amster dam. The whole has been revised and the notices of current history brought down to the present date, and the book is now laid before students and readers with the hope that it may aid in the sys tematic study of a subject, the treatment of which by writers upon economics is generally either too summary or too diffuse for ordinary purposes. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Banks and Banking The connection between commercial crises and banking is of such an intimate character that the leading incidents of every important crisis have been given. Modern banking is so dependent upon the rate of interest which determines the profits of banks that it has been considered desirable to give a somewhat lengthened account of the causes of fluctuations in the value of money. The concluding chapters are devoted to incidents of modern practice, such as cheques, bills of exchange and the Opening of branch offices. The author hopes that the notes may be of some value to those candidates who are preparing for the Institute of Bankers' Examinations. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Talks on Banking and Elementary Economics, 1922-1923: To Be Delivered by the Banker Before the Higher Grades of Grammar Schools, High Schools, Colleges and Universities The bankers whose talks were of greatest benefit last year were those who, after each third or fourth talk invited the teachers and the pupils of the classes to visit the banks to visualize what had been discussed; who there took pains to make the visitors feel that they were truly welcome and that a bank is, in a large measure, a public institution, created for the best possible community advancement, and an institution which desires above all things to serve. While bankers, not accustomed to public speaking, may approach this new duty with some hesitation, they will soon find in it a charm that will make them want to continue a work which must ultimately prove of inestimable value to the banker's community, and to the country at large, to say nothing of the banking business itself to which many benefits will accrue from a greater general prosperity. Immediately upon receipt of these Talks, the banker should get in touch with the school authorities nearest his bank, and arrange for the date and hour when he is to appear at the school. The local banker should endeavor to arrange with his newspaper for the publication of these Talks as soon as possible after the date set for their release. The Committee on Public Education bespeaks for this work the earnest and thoughtful cooperation of the bankers of America. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Elements of Banking 1. Banking is a department of the great Science of Economics, which is the Science of Exchanges, or of Commerce in its widest extent. The word Economics is derived from the Greek olkof, which is the technical term in Attic law for Property of all sorts and descriptions, whatever its nature be, and vouos, a law. Hence the word Economics means the Science which treats of the Laws which govern the relations of Exchangeable Quantities. Banking, as will be explained more fully hereafter, is that department of the Science of Economics which treats of the exchanges of Money for Credit, and of Credit for Credit. 2. Aristotle says: - "We call Wealth everything whose value is measured by Money," or rather, we may say everything which is exchangeable, as Money itself is an Exchangeable Quantity. Aristotle's definition of Wealth is now generally accepted by modern Economists as the true one, thus Mill says: - "Everything forms therefore a part of Wealth which has power of purchasing." The former is the account upon which the customer Operates by drawing cheques according to his needs. Unless the balance standing to the credit of the customer falls below a fixed minimum it is not the general practice for a banker to make any charge for the accommodation granted. The latter is the account upon which the customer Cannot Operate except upon the terms agreed between himself and the banker. The money deposited is only obtainable after proper notice. Upon this money the banker pays interest to the customer, the amount of the interest being calculated according to circumstances. There is no fixed custom amongst bankers as to deposit accounts. AS already stated, the business Of discounting bills of exchange and promissory notes will be fully explained in a future chapter, and the whole question Of loans granted by bankers will be treated in detail in a chapter specially devoted to that subject. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Practical Banking: New and Enlarged In the preface to the first edition was fully set forth the origin of this work; As there explained, a consider able portion Of Part I, relating to Banks of Deposit and Discounts, was derived from the Bankers' Commonplace Book, a work written by an experienced bank officer and possessing great merit. Since his day, however, many changes have been introduced into banking, and his work, though still worth reading, does not adequately deal with the conditions that now confront the banking world. So, nearly all taken from that work has been omitted, except a part of the chapter relating to the duties of the president and a few paragraphs pertaining to directors. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Readings in Money and Banking: Selected and Adapted Designed mainly for class room use in connection with one of the introductory manuals on the subject of Money and Banking or of Money and Currency, this volume, in itself, lays no claim to completeness. Where its use is contem plated the problems of emphasis and proportion are, accord ingly, to be solved by the selection of one or another of the available texts, or by the choice of supplementary lecture topics and materials. The contents of the introductory manuals are so divergent in character as to render possible combinations of text and readings that will include, it is hoped, matter of such range and variety as may be desired. Fullness of treatment has been attempted, however, in the chapters dealing with the important recent developments in the mechanism of exchange, and my aim has been through out to Select and, in many instances, to adapt with a view to meeting the wants of those who are interested chiefly in the modern phases of the subject.
