Book excerpt: Trieste Publishing has a massive catalogue of classic book titles. Our aim is to provide readers with the highest quality reproductions of fiction and non-fiction literature that has stood the test of time. The many thousands of books in our collection have been sourced from libraries and private collections around the world. The titles that Trieste Publishing has chosen to be part of the collection have been scanned to simulate the original. Our readers see the books the same way that their first readers did decades or a hundred or more years ago. Books from that period are often spoiled by imperfections that did not exist in the original. Imperfections could be in the form of blurred text, photographs, or missing pages. It is highly unlikely that this would occur with one of our books. Our extensive quality control ensures that the readers of Trieste Publishing's books will be delighted with their purchase. Our staff has thoroughly reviewed every page of all the books in the collection, repairing, or if necessary, rejecting titles that are not of the highest quality. This process ensures that the reader of one of Trieste Publishing's titles receives a volume that faithfully reproduces the original, and to the maximum degree possible, gives them the experience of owning the original work.We pride ourselves on not only creating a pathway to an extensive reservoir of books of the finest quality, but also providing value to every one of our readers. Generally, Trieste books are purchased singly - on demand, however they may also be purchased in bulk. Readers interested in bulk purchases are invited to contact us directly to enquire about our tailored bulk rates.

Exercises in Translation This book completes the series of preparatory text-books announced by the present editors. It has been prepared with a view to furnish a sufficient amount of study and practice in Latin composition, during the last year of preparation for college, and the first of a college course. It supposes in the learner a fair acquaintance with the language, gained by the reading of the usual authors and the careful study of grammar and notes, with some elementary practice in writing, at least as much as that given in the "Method," to which this is intended as a sequel. "Latin Composition," so called, has often been taught solely by the use of detached sentences illustrating the various constructions of syntax, translated out of Roman authors, to be re-translated into the original form. We are persuaded that, however serviceable this may be to give a certain mechanical familiarity with the formal rules of Grammar, it is not a good preparation for "composition," in the sense that properly belongs to that word. The best way to learn intelligently the usages of the language is to put real English into real Latin. While we seek, therefore, to cover the entire ground of syntactical constructions, the suggestions given in this book are throughout from the English point of view. The question we have attempted to answer is not "How closely may this or that phrase in Cicero be imitated by the learner?" Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Elementary Latin Dictionary This is substantially an abridgment of my 'latin Dictionary for Schools' (harper and Brothers, The vocabulary has been extended to include all words used by Catullus, Tibullus, Propertius, and Tacitus (in his larger works), as well as those used by Terence, Caesar, Sallust, Cicero, Livy, N epos, Vergil, Horace, Ovid, J uvenal, Phaedrus, and Curtius. On the other hand, space has been saved by the omission_ of all detailed references to books and passages, only the name of the writer being indicated as authority for each word or phrase; and by limiting the illustrative citations to those which are typical or peculiarly instructive. Proper names, too, have been excluded, except those which, because of peculiarities of form or of. Their derivations, require special explanation. In all other respects, the plan of the School Dictionary, ' as explained in the Preface to it, has been followed, as far as the smaller size of the present work permits. In a few instances, errors which have been detected in the larger book have been corrected in this; and in two or three words, vowels, which were there left unmarked, are now distinguished as long, on the strength of later researches. I take pleasure in acknowledging the valuable aid rendered me, in the prep aration of this abridgment, by J. W. Marshall, late Professor of the Latin Language and Literature in Dickinson College, by whom most of the illustrative phrases and passages cited have been selected. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elementary Latin: An Introductory Course In the preparation of these lessons, the author has kept in view the necessity for simplicity of statement and for the avoidance of unnecessary details. The purpose has been to furnish drill on the forms and constructions of most frequent occurrence, leaving the more difficult syntactical relations and the forms less frequently employed for a later point in the course. A few topics included in the lessons near the end of the book have been given place in order to meet the needs of teachers who prefer a more complete presentation of Latin grammar in the first year. These topics may, however, be omitted and the work of the lessons made to consist of the translation exercises and drill on the essential constructions and forms previously given. Instead of the usual arrangement of lessons which must be divided into two or three assignments, the plan has been adopted of providing short lessons which can usually be covered in single recitations. Naturally, no such plan can be, made to correspond absolutely to the needs of every class, and occasionally a teacher may find it necessary to omit or to leave for later review, part of the exercises of a lesson. But the presentation of forms and syntax in small units will, it is hoped, tend to prevent confusion in the mind of the pupil and to aid the teacher in planning the work of the class. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elementary Latin Latin seem alive; to give the first year study a value for gen eral culture; to minimize the difficulties of beginning Latin; to prepare thoroughly for the second year work. To carry further the first two aims of the book, the number of illustrations has been nearly doubled, and a description in English is attached to each. These descriptions taken together give a general idea of the life and customs of the Romans. To minimize the difficulties of beginning Latin, the early lessons have been divided and made shorter, so that the ap proach to the subject is much more gradual in the new edition than in the old. The first ten lessons of the former edition make twenty in the new book. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
