Book excerpt: Excerpt from Electro Dynamics: The Direct-Current Motor The advanced student will perceive the analogy between the law of acceleration given in Chapter VII. and that for the rise of current in an inductive circuit, and may be tempted to pursue the subject for himself. The numerical accuracy attempted has been limited to that attainable with an ordinary ten-inch slide rule, on which all the examples have been worked out. Importance is attached to the graphic method of solution, and the diagrams are intended to serve as exercises for the student, who should, work out similar problems with different data by the same methods. I have to thank many friends for assistance, particularly Mr. H. S. Hering, for allowing me to use the results of his tests on electric cars; Mr. L. H. Parker, for providing me with particulars of the construction and performance of the electric locomotives on the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad; Mr., H. P. Curtiss, for placing at my disposal the outcome of his experiments on the Buffalo and Niagara Falls Electric Railway; and the Railway Department of the General Electric Company, for furnishing me with valuable information and data. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Direct-and Alternating-Current Machine Design Being Instructions for the Design of Motors and Generators This volume is especially prepared for self-instruction in the art of designing direct- and alternating-current machinery. Care has been taken to remain strictly within the province of design; the reader being assumed to possess knowledge of the principles of electricity and magnetism, and to be familiar with the theory of operation of electrical machines. The designs are carried out according to methods developed in actual practice and are supplemented by data and dimensions of lines of machines actually built by several of the largest American and European companies. The book is divided into two parts: one treating the design of direct-current machines, and the other that of alternating-current machines; each part being followed by a list of questions which clearly bring out the important points to be remembered. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Direct-Current Machine Design: Being Instructions for the Design of Motors and Generators Branches of Science Involved in Dynamo De sign. - The following discussion of the design of dyna mos and motors will be confined to the consideration of direct-current machines. The design of a dynamo and motor relates to three essen tial parts: first, the armature carrying the Conductors in which the electric energy is generated or absorbed; second, the field magnet that produces the magnetic field or flux in which the armature revolves; and third, the various mechanical parts and arrangements necessary to carry out the electrical and magnetic actions. Thus, three great branches of science - electricity, magnetism, and mechanics - are involved. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Direct-Current Motor and Generator Troubles: Operation and Repair The chief purpose of this book is to give the methods, which many years of experience have proved to be both simple and effective, for tracing and remedying direct current motor and generator troubles. In addition, the questions of the selec tion, operation, care and repair of direct current machinery are analyzed from the standpoint of the operator. The theories of why a motor or generator will run, as well as the problems and fundamentals underlying the design of direct current machinery, have been very completely given and expounded in numerous excellent books on the market. But it is our belief that there is a vast army of operators in the electrical world who are greatly interested in why the motor or generator will not run, and it is to supply informa tion on this topic that the present work has been written. Throughout, it is assumed that the operator is confronted with the question of selection of the best machine for his purpose; then with the question of the best operation of that machine and in case of troubles, with their tracing and effec tive remedying. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Continuous Current Armatures: Their Winding and Construction; A Handbook for Students, Designers, and Practical Men This little volume was originally intended as a trans lation of Professor Arnold's book on the same subject. It was, however, thought that this subject could be made clearer by omitting a discussion of all those windings which, though possible, are but seldom em ployed for standard machines of medium size. Thus, While following Professor Arnold's splendid method of discussing the windings, the discussions have been restricted to the commonly employed drum windings only. Book excerpt: The demand for high-performance submarine power cables is increasing as more and more offshore wind parks are installed, and the national electric grids are interconnected. Submarine power cables are installed for the highest voltages and power to transport electric energy under the sea between islands, countries and even continents. The installation and operation of submarine power cables is much different from land cables. Still, in most textbooks on electrical power systems, information on submarine cables is scarce. This book is closing the gap. Different species of submarine power cables and their application are explained. Students and electric engineers learn on the electric and mechanic properties of submarine cables. Project developers and utility managers will gain useful information on the necessary marine activities such as pre-laying survey, cable lay vessels, guard boats etc., for the submarine cable installation and repair. Investors and decision makers will find an overview on environmental aspects of submarine power cables. A comprehensive reference list is given for those who want further reading.

Book excerpt: This book, which will appeal to all with an interest in the history of radiology and physics, casts new light on the life and career of Wilhelm Conrad Röntgen, showing how his personality was shaped by his youth in the Netherlands and his teachers in Switzerland. Beyond this, it explores the technical developments relevant to the birth of radiology in the late nineteenth century and examines the impact of the discovery of X-rays on a broad range of scientific research. Röntgen (1845-1923) was born in Lennep, Germany, but emigrated with his family to the Netherlands in 1848. As a 17-year-old he moved to Utrecht, entering the Technical School and living at the home of Dr. Jan Willem Gunning. In this well-educated family he was stimulated to continue his studies at university. In 1868 he received a diploma from the Federal Polytechnic School in Zurich and just a year later completed a PhD in physics. He followed his mentor, August Kundt, to the universities of Würzburg (1870) and Strasburg (1872) and married Anna Ludwig in 1872. In 1879 Röntgen gained his first professorship at a German University, in Giessen, followed by a chair in Würzburg in 1888. Here he discovered X-rays in 1895, for which he received the first Nobel Prize in physics in 1901. From 1900 until his retirement in 1921 he occupied the chair of physics at the Munich University.

Book excerpt: The physicist Friedrich Houtermans (1903-1966) was an essential promoter and proponent of the development of physics in Berne. He introduced a number of activities in the field of elementary particles, with a special focus on the physics of cosmic rays, and important contributions in applied physics. This biography of Houtermans was written by Edoardo Amaldi and was almost finished just before his unexpected death in 1989. The editors have only corrected typographical errors and have introduced only minimal text changes in order to preserve the original content. Additionally they have collected and included unpublished pictures and memories from Houtermans’ students and collaborators. The text is the result of a thorough and intensive study on Houtermans’ life and character carried out by Edoardo Amaldi. It is more than a biography, since the figure of Houtermans is set in a historical perspective of Europe between the two world wars. This book will be of great interest to historians and historians of science.
