Book excerpt: "This thesis presents several projects devoted to the optical and electrical characterization of (Cd,Mg)Te crystals and their application as X-ray detectors. Throughout much of this work, a femtosecond pump-probe spectroscopy system was built in order to carry out these experiments. The thesis is organized into 7 chapters. The first chapter covers the current literature state-of-the art on experimental work performed to date on CMgT. In the second chapter, we present our experimental setup in detail, simultaneously reviewing operation of a femtosecond laser system and techniques of small signal detection. The next three chapters describe the studies performed for this thesis, starting with femtosecond pump-probe measurements of time-resolved nonequilibrium carrier dynamics. We pay close attention to the use of dopants and post-growth annealing and their impact on the relaxation dynamics. Analysis of the experimental data led to the development of a new relaxation model. This model provides a quantitative description of various relaxation processes and resolves the differences between deep and surface trap states. Next, the pump-probe setup is used to detect coherent acoustic phonons (CAPs) in an effort to observe their dynamics as well as determine the speed of sound through the crystal. The latter is achieved by tuning our laser from 750 up to 870 nm and measuring the CAP oscillation frequency. Finally, we present our studies on both photoconductive (PC) and electro-optic (EO) femtosecond (THz bandwidth) responses, of (Cd,Mg)Te single crystals. In an In-doped, Cd0.92Mg0.08Te crystal, subpicosecond electrical pulses were optically generated via a PC effect and subsequently detected in the same crystal using an EO sampling scheme. The above approach led to a new "experimental-on-chip" concept. By measuring the transient waveforms at different distances from the excitation point, we calculated the transmission-line complex propagation factor and then reconstructed the electromagnetic transient generated directly at the excitation point, showing that the original PC transient was subpicosecond in duration with a fall time of 500 fs. The measured EO retardation, together with the amount of the electric-field attenuation, allowed us to determine the magnitude of the internal EO effect in our (Cd,Mg)Te crystal. The obtained THz-frequency EO coefficient r41 was equal to 0.4 pm/V, which is at the lower end among the different values reported for CdTe-based ternaries; apparently, due to a twinned structure of the tested (Cd,Mg)Te crystal. Chapter 6 reports on the practical implementation of (Cd,Mg)Te photoconductive devices as a diagnostic X-ray detection tool in the multi-terawatt (MTW) laser facility at the University of Rochester’s Laboratory for Laser Energetics. In addition to efficiently measuring high energy X-rays, we also detected high energy protons emitted from the target. Our X-ray studies show that with some further refinement of our crystalline structure, (Cd,Mg)Te detectors are viable devices for time-resolved measurements of X-rays emitted by very broadband sources, such as OMEGA targets in inertial confinement fusion experiments."--Pages x-xii.

Book excerpt: "The adsorption of 7-ethynyl-2,4,9-trithia-tricyclo[3.3.1.13,7]decane (7ETTD), polyaniline (PANI), triethoxysilane (TES), and poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) on ultrathin sputtered amorphous CdS films has been investigated using inelastic electron tunneling spectroscopy (IETS), in conjunction with multiple reflection adsorption IR spectroscopy. Conductance-voltage data are recorded for tunnel junctions of the type Al/CdS/7ETTD/Pb over a temperature range of 4K to room temperature and they indicate that the presence of the adsorbed 7ETTD layer on the CdS dramatically modifies the conductance-voltage behavior of the junctions. These measurements show that different conduction mechanisms, including tunneling and possibly hopping, are responsible for charge transfer through the junctions depending on current, temperature, and voltage. WKB fits to the data are used to determine tunnel barrier parameters (height and width) for Al/CdS/Pb junctions with and without adsorbed 7ETTD layers on the CdS. Analysis of the fits shows that tunneling occurs at low bias (less than ~0.2 V) but, at higher bias voltages, modification of the barrier parameters alone is insufficient to account for the observed conductance changes. A frontier orbital model is invoked which does offer a plausible explanation for these conductance changes. The model assumes bias-dependent coupling between HOMO and LUMO states of the adsorbed 7ETTD and surface states on the CdS. The present work suggests that, because of the marked effect on the conductance iv of CdS ultra-thin films, 7ETTD and other similar compounds may be candidates for use in molecular electronic device fabrication. It was found that PANI and TES do not adsorb strongly on amorphous CdS but can be used to modify conductance-voltage behavior. On the other hand, PMMA adsorbs strongly and shows promise as a material for use as a host matrix, in photovoltaic applications. Preliminary work is presented in which CdS nanoparticles size is estimated using surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy and Atomic Force Microscopy, and it has been determined that IETS and conductance-voltage measurement could be extended for the investigation of he CdS nanoparticles electronic properties. Further investigations into the surface properties of CdS are presented. Specifically, a robust technique, based on vertical, "z-lift", manipulation of a negatively biased oscillating atomic force microscope tip, is extended to CdS and used to create raised columnar nanostructures with high aspect ratios (up to 40 nm high/150 nm wide) on amorphous CdS thin films. The nanostructures' height 8-40 nm can be controlled and correlates with CdS film thickness. An in-house modified electric force microscope is used to record the associated surface charge distribution in the proximity of the nanostructures which is found to be opposite to that of the tip."--Abstract.

Book excerpt: "This thesis is devoted to the optical characterization of Cd1-xMnxTe [(Cd,Mn)Te] semiconductor based radiation detectors. In it I present my research on the study of (Cd,Mn)Te single crystal as both a material for detection of high-energy x rays as well as for sub-picosecond voltage sensing. The work includes the practical implementation of (Cd,Mn)Te, its characterization using ultrafast spectroscopy, and comparative measurements to other competitive materials. Characterization of the voltage sensitivity of (Cd,Mn)Te is accomplished using time-resolved spectroscopy and sub-picosecond electro-magnetic pulses. My research shows that the electro-optic (EO) effect of (Cd,Mn)Te is nearly an order of magnitude greater than previously believed, and accomplishes voltage sensitivities for THz signals greater than traditional EO transducers currently available. For measurements of low-frequency signals, the results agree with the unexceptionally low textbook value; however, through various experiments studying the EO dependence on temperature, fabrication technique, and frequency, I show that the culprit for the low sensitivity at low frequency is free-carrier screening. Furthermore, testing the wavelength dependence shows that the sensitivity is enhanced for optical probe energies approaching the crystal bandgap, which in of itself, is tunable in the visible to near infrared spectrum by changing the manganese concentration. Comparative measurements to LiTaO3 are made showing the same sub-picosecond temporal resolution, but significantly greater voltage sensitivity absent of dielectric loading. I further report on the implementation of (Cd,Mn)Te photoconductive devices (PCDs) as the diagnostics x-ray detection tool used for conducting inertial confinement fusion (ICF) experiments in the OMEGA Facility at the University of Rochester's Laboratory for Laser Energetics, and compare the results to those of standard diamond PCDs. I present measurements of the (Cd,Mn)Te PCDs, intended to characterize both the temporal and spectral dependence of x-ray emissions from laser-illuminated targets during ICF experiments. The Cd0.95Mn0.05Te single crystals, doped with vanadium and annealed in Cd vapor, exhibit resistivity of [...characters removed]. A 1-mm-long and 2.3-mm-long detector is placed in the same housing as a 1-mm-long diamond PCD. Each device is preceded by a Be x-ray filter with 37% x-ray transmission at the 1-keV cutoff energy. The energy of the incident OMEGA laser pulses vary from 2.3 kJ to 28 kJ. Using targets of empty plastic shells, we observe two x-ray emission events separated by 1.24 ns: the first event is caused by heating of the shell that created a hot corona, while the second event is an x-ray emission from the fully compressed target. ICF experiments of targets with steel cores enable the analysis of time-resolved relaxation dynamics of photo-excited carriers in the (Cd,Mn)Te crystals. According to my calculations, the (Cd,Mn)Te material can effectively absorb x rays with energies of up to 200 keV. Thus, the (Cd,Mn)Te PCDs are likely to complement the diamond detectors currently used in the laser-confinement fusion experiments."--Leaves v-vi.
