Book excerpt: Materials in which many-body interactions, low-dimensional confinement, and/or strong spin-orbit coupling are present show a rich variety of phenomena, but are still poorly understood. Essential information about the origin of such phenomena can be obtained by measuring their electronic structure. This thesis presents an experimental study of the electronic structure of some low-dimensional and/or strongly correlated materials of current fundamental interest, using angle- and spin-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES and SARPES). In the introductory part, I present my work on two innovative textbook examples showing how interactions affect the band structure of a material: the coupling of electrons with phonons in a Debye distribution in a two-dimensional electron system (2DES) in ZnO, a wide-band-gap oxide semiconductor used in photovoltaic applications, and the splitting induced by strong spin-orbit coupling (SOC) in the bulk valence band of ZnTe, another important semiconductor used in optoelectronic devices. Then, in the rest of this thesis, I discuss my original results in three different low-dimensional systems of current interest: 1.The realisation of a 2DES at the (110) surface of SnO2, the first of its kind in a rutile structure. Tunability of its carrier density by means of temperature or Eu deposition and robustness against surface reconstructions and exposure to ambient conditions make this 2DES promising for applications. By means of a simple redox reaction on the surface, this work has proven that oxygen vacancies can dope the conduction band minimum at the surface of SnO2, solving a long-debated issue about their role in n-type doping in SnO2. 2.The study of topological surface states in M2Te2X (with M = Hf, Zr, or Ti; and X = P or As), a new family of three-dimensional topological metals, originating from SOC and being protected by time-reversal symmetry. Their electronic structure and spin texture, studied by ARPES and SARPES, reveal the presence of massless Dirac fermions giving rise to Dirac-node arcs. 3.The investigation of the quasi-one-dimensional heavy-fermion material YbNi4P2, which presents a second-order quantum phase transition from a ferromagnetic to a paramagnetic phase upon partial substitution of phosphorous by arsenide. Such a transition is expected to occur only in zero- or one-dimensional systems, but a direct measurement of the electronic structure of ferromagnetic quantum-critical materials was missing so far. By careful in-situ preparation and cleaning of the surface of YbNi4P2 single crystals, which are impossible to cleave, their electronic structure has been successfully measured by ARPES, thus effectively unveiling the quasi-one-dimensionality of YbNi4P2. Moreover, the protocol used to make this material accessible to ARPES can be readily generalised to other exotic materials lacking a cleavage plane.

Book excerpt: The advent of two-dimensional (2D) materials offers a unique platform for the study of solids at the atomic scale. However, the manipulation of 2D materials is complex and remains a drawback for which no practical solution has been found for the mass production of devices. Quasi-2D materials are easier to manipulate while sometimes retaining the essential properties of strictly 2D materials. This thesis presents three systems that illustrate how the electronic structure of quasi-2D materials can be modified by induced changes in the atomic structure. Quasi-2D materials are susceptible to Fermi surface (FS) instabilities, which can induce phase transitions. In this context, the linear magnetoresistance of LaSb2 has been explained by a possible charge density wave (CDW). Indeed, the anisotropic structure of LaSb2 gives rise to a low-dispersion FS in kz with regions favourable to nesting. Using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES), we observe significant changes in the electronic structure at 13 K, such as FSreplicas and band folding, clear signs of additional periodicity in the CDW phase, which in some cases can lead to gap opening. These spectral features allow us to identify the nesting vector q and propose a theoretical model for the periodic distortion of the lattice ...

Book excerpt: The effect of reduced dimensionality, inherent at the crystallographic level, on the electronic properties of low dimensional materials can be dramatic, leading to structural and electronic instabilities—including supercond- tivity at high temperatures, charge density waves, and localisation—which continue to attract widespread interest. The layered transition metal dichalcogenides have engaged attention for many years, partly arising from the charge density wave effects which some show and the controlled way in which their properties can be modified by intercalation, while the development of epitaxial growth techniques has opened up promising areas based on dichalcogenide heterostructures and quantum wells. The discovery of high-temperature superconducting oxides, and the realisation that polymeric materials too can be exploited in a controlled way for various opto-electronic applications, have further sti- lated interest in the effects of structural dimensionality. It seems timely therefore to draw together some strands of recent research involving a range of disparate materials which share some common char- teristics of low dimensionality. This resulting volume is aimed at researchers with specialist interests in the particular materials discussed but who may also wish to examine the related phenomena observed in different systems, and at a more general solid state audience with broad interests in electronic properties and low dimensional phenomena. Space limitations have required us to be selective as regards particular materials, though we have managed to include those as dissimilar as polymeric semiconductors, superconducting oxides, bronzes and layered chalcogenides.

Book excerpt: Electronic Structure is the key factor for identifying new material or phases and understanding the underlying physics behind emergent phenomena. In the investigation of the electronic structures of novel complex materials, the angular resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) serves as a powerful tool. The thesis summarizes two of my graduate research projects, which both involves probing electronic structures and analyzing underlying physics on novel complex materials with state-of-the-art ARPES techniques: In the first part, I would summarize our investigation on the materials with non-trivial topology. I would start from our initial work on the three-dimensional topological insulators where we identified the characteristic surface states and verified that they are robust from perturbations. Following the line of search, we discovered three-dimensional topological insulators with other interesting properties, including the strongly inversion asymmetric topological insulator BiTeCl, and the strongly correlated topological Kondo insulator SmB6. We further extended our research to Na3Bi and Cd3As2, where we found them hosting a three-dimensional Dirac point and are first examples of topological Dirac semimetals, a three-dimensional analogue of graphene. In the second part of my thesis, I would discuss the ARPES study on the electron correlation level in the iron chalcogenide family Fe(Se, Te). For the parent compound FeTe, we discovered "peak-dip-hump" spectra with heavily renormalized quasiparticles in the low temperature antiferromagnetic state, characteristic of coherent polarons seen in other correlated materials. The increase of Se ratio leads to an incoherent to coherent crossover in the electronic structure. Furthermore, the reduction of the electronic correlation in Fe(Se, Te) evolves in an orbital-dependent way, where the dxy orbital is influenced most significantly. Finally, in comparison with other members of iron chalcogenides (AxFe2-ySe2, A=K, Rb, Cs; and monolayer FeSe film on SrTiO3 substrate), we found the strong correlation behavior is universal in all iron chalcogenides. Specifically, the dxy orbital is always heavily renormalized and loses spectral weight upon raising temperature. Several physical models of the orbital dependent physics and electron correlations would be discussed.

Book excerpt: We use angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) to study the 2D heavy fermion superconductor, Ce2RhIn. The Fermi surface is rather complicated and consists of several hole and electron pockets with one of the sheets displaying strong nesting properties with a q-vector of (0.32, 0.32) [pi]/a. We do not observe kz dispersion of the Fermi sheets, which is consistent with the expected 2D character of the electronic structure. Comparison of the ARPES data to band structure calculations suggests that a localized picture of the f-electrons works best. While there is some agreement in the overall band dispersion and location of the Fermi sheets, the model does not reproduce all observed bands and is not completely accurate for those it does. As a result, our data paves the way for improving the band structure calculations and the general understanding of the transport and thermodynamical properties of this material.

Book excerpt: The system c(10x2)Ag/Cu(001) was investigated with Angle-Resolved Photoemission (ARP), Low Energy Electron Diffraction (LEED) and Auger Electron Spectroscopy (AES). LEED and AES provided the calibration of a quartz microbalance used to measure the amount of silver evaporated onto the copper single crystal and also established the monolayer geometrical structure at one monolayer exposure. An off-normal ARP bandmapping study performed with polarized HeI and NeI radiation demonstrated the electronically two-dimensional nature of the silver d-bands at coverages of near one monolayer. The states at the surface Brillouin Zone center were assigned upon the basis of their polarization dependences and a structural model of hexagonal symmetry. A normal emission ARP experiment was performed at the Stanford Synchrotron Radiation Laboratory (SSRL) over the photon energy range of 6 to 32 eV. Data from it documented the evolution of the valence electronic structure of the silver overlayer from a two-dimensional hexagonal valence to a three-dimensional behavior converging towards that of bulk Ag(111). A structural study was attempted using the ARP technique of Normal Emission Photoelectron Diffraction over the photon energy range of 3.4 to 3.7 keV at SSRL, the results of which are inconclusive.

Book excerpt: The field of low-dimensional conductors has been very active for more than twenty years. It has grown continuously and both the inorganic and organic materials have remark able properties, such as charge and spin density waves and superconductivity. The discovery of superconductivity at high temperature in copper-based quasi two-dimensional conducting oxides nearly ten years ago has further enlarged the field and stimulated new research on inorganic conductors. It was obviously impossible to cover such a broad field in a ten day Institute and it seemed pertinent to concentrate on inorganic conductors, excluding the high Tc superconducting oxides. In this context, it was highly desirable to include both physics and chemistry in the same Institute in order to tighten or in some cases to establish links between physicists and chemists. This Advanced Study Institute is the continuation of a series of similar ones which have taken place every few years since 1974. 73 participants coming from 13 countries have taken part in this School at the beautiful site of the Centre de Physique des Houches in the Mont-Blanc mountain range. The scientific programme included more than forty lectures and seminars, two poster sessions and ten short talks. Several discussion sessions were organized for the evenings, one on New Materials, one on New Topics and one on the special problem of the Fermi and Luttinger liquids. The scientific activity was kept high from the beginning to the end of the Institute.

Book excerpt: These volumes contain 365 of the 505 papers presented at the VUV-11 Conference, held at Rikkyo University, Tokyo, from August 27th to September 1st 1995. The papers are divided into three sections: atomic and molecular spectroscopy, solid state spectroscopy and instrumentation and technological applications. New aspects presented were both quantitative and qualitative improvements in fluorescence spectroscopy and magnetic circular dichroism measurements. The fluorescence data are complementary to those of photoemission in a sense but they appear to open up a new method to analyze the optical excitation and relaxation processes. The application of magnetic circular dichroism has proved to be useful not only in analyzing the electronic structures of magnetic materials but also in practical applications to material engineering as found in experiments combined with photoelectron microscopy. Excellent developments in applications are only found in the field of surface photochemistry, where the technique of etching using VUV light has been appreciably refined. Although the majority of distinctive scientific features in the VUV-11 Conference have been brought about by the application of synchrotron radiation, experiments using a different type of light source appear to have progressed steadily. This is evident in the studies of plasma radiation.

Book excerpt: This volume contains a sequence of reviews presented at the NATO Advanced Study Institute on 'Low Dimensional Structures in Semiconductors ... from Basic Physics to Applications.' This was part of the International School of Materials Science and 1990 at the Ettore Majorana Centre in Sicily. Technology held in July Only a few years ago, Low Dimensional Structures was an esoteric concept, but now it is apparent they are likely to playa major role in the next generation of electronic devices. The theme of the School acknowledged this rapidly developing maturity.' The contributions to the volume consider not only the essential physics, but take a wider view of the topic, starting from material growth and processing, then prog ressing right through to applications with some discussion of the likely use of low dimensional devices in systems. The papers are arranged into four sections, the first of which deals with basic con cepts of semiconductor and low dimensional systems. The second section is on growth and fabrication, reviewing MBE and MOVPE methods and discussing the achievements and limitations of techniques to reduce structures into the realms of one and zero dimensions. The third section covers the crucial issue of interfaces while the final section deals with devices and device physics.

Book excerpt: Photoelectron spectroscopy is now becoming more and more required to investigate electronic structures of various solid materials in the bulk, on surfaces as well as at buried interfaces. The energy resolution was much improved in the last decade down to 1 meV in the low photon energy region. Now this technique is available from a few eV up to 10 keV by use of lasers, electron cyclotron resonance lamps in addition to synchrotron radiation and X-ray tubes. High resolution angle resolved photoelectron spectroscopy (ARPES) is now widely applied to band mapping of materials. It attracts a wide attention from both fundamental science and material engineering. Studies of the dynamics of excited states are feasible by time of flight spectroscopy with fully utilizing the pulse structures of synchrotron radiation as well as lasers including the free electron lasers (FEL). Spin resolved studies also made dramatic progress by using higher efficiency spin detectors and two dimensional spin detectors. Polarization dependent measurements in the whole photon energy spectrum of the spectra provide useful information on the symmetry of orbitals. The book deals with the fundamental concepts and approaches for the application of this technique to materials studies. Complementary techniques such as inverse photoemission, photoelectron diffraction, photon spectroscopy including infrared and X-ray and scanning tunneling spectroscopy are presented. This book provides not only a wide scope of photoelectron spectroscopy of solids but also extends our understanding of electronic structures beyond photoelectron spectroscopy.
