We take the point of view that magnetic phenomena are interesting because of what they tell us about chemical systems. Yet, we believe it is no longer tenable to write only about such subjects as distinguishing stereochemistry from the measurement of a magnetic susceptibility over a restricted temper ature region; that is, paramagnetism is so well-understood that little remains to explore which is of fundamental interest. The major purpose of this book is to direct chemists to some of the recent work of physicists, and in particular to a lengthy exposition of magnetic ordering phenomena. Chemists have long been interested in magnetic interactions in clusters, but many have shied away from long-range ordering phenomena. Now however more people are investigating magnetic behavior at temperatures in the liquid helium region, where ordering phenomena can scarcely be avoided. The emphasis is on complexes of the iron-series ions, for this is where most of the recent work, both experimental and theoretical, has been done. The discussion therefore is limited to insulating crystals; the nature of magnetism in metals and such materials as semiconductors is sufficiently different that a discussion of these substances is beyond our purposes. The book is directed more at the practical experimentalist than at the theoretician.

Book excerpt: This book deals with adsorption and catalysis on the surface of transition elements and their compounds, many of which are in teresting because of their particular electronic structure. The authors have worked through a vast body of experimental evi dence on the structure and properties of surfaces of transition metals and relevant oxides. Consideration is given mostly to simple (as opposed to mixed) oxides of transition elements, to common metals and to the adsorption of simple gases. A great deal of attention is paid to the nature of active surface sites responsible for chemisorption and catalytic transformations. The description relies mainly on the simplified ligand-field theory, which, however, proves quite satisfactory for predicting the adsorptive and catalytic activity of species. In many cases simple systems were explored with the aid of novel techniques, and it is only for such systems that the mechanism of the ele mentary act of adsorption and catalysis can be given adequate treatment. The present monograph has emerged from our earlier work in Russian, which appeared in the Khimiya Publishing House (Mos cow) in 1981. Two such applications are in the area of optics and electronics. These are fields where the use of inorganic materials has a long history. As the field of microelectronics develops the demands on the performance of such materials increases, and it becomes necessary to discover compounds that will meet these demands. The field of optoelectronics represents a merging of the two disciplines. Its emergence is a natural one because many of the applications involve both of these properties, and also because the electronic structure of a metal compound that confers novel optical properties is often one that also influences its electron transfer and conductivity characteristics. Two of the more important growth areas that have led to these developments are communications and medicine. Within the communications field there is the microelectronics that is involved in information storage and transmittal, some of which will be transferred into the optical regime. Within the medical field there are chemical probes that transmit analytical information from an in vivo environment. This information needs to be readily accessible from an external site, and then quickly converted into images or data that yield accurate and inexpensive diagnoses.

This bibliography of 1498 references marks the first step of that effort. We are pub lishing this material now rather than waiting until the review is complete some two years hence because we believe that the information already accumulated will be of immediate use to a broad spectrum of researchers. Anyone ambitious enough to read through all the articles on binary fluorides will find that the struc tures and force fields of many of these molecules are at present unknown. For example, it has not been clearly established to which point group(s) the lanthanide trifluorides should be assigned. There remain interesting problems relating to the role of Jahn-Teller and pseudo-Jahn-Teller distortions in some of the transition metal fluorides such as VF , MoF , ReF , and ReF , to name only a few. One s s 6 7 also finds fascinating examples of large-amplitude motions, or pseudorotations, as they are often called, in such molecules as XeF 6, I F 7, and PF 5' For those binary fluorides whose equilibrium geometries are precisely known, there still exists the problem of accurately determining the harmonic force field. In a few cases, most notably the Group VA trifluorides, there has been some attempt made at extracting the cubic and quartic contributions to the force field.
