Book excerpt: Total energy calculations based on density functional theory are generally a good approach to obtain the properties of solids. The local density approximation (LDA) is widely used for calculating the ground state properties of electronic systems; for excited states the errors are in general unknown. The important aspects of LDA pertain to the modeling of the exchange-correlation interaction. If the exchange-correlation potential is approximately the same for the ground and excited states, one expects good results from the LDA calculations for excited states. In this thesis, we utilize the total energy technique for numerical computations of the electronic structure of iron in several magnetic phases and crystalline structures. 1. Body-centered-cubic iron in the ferromagnetic and several antiferromagnetic configurations. We use the total energy results to obtain the parameters in a model Heisenberg Hamiltonian. These include the interaction parameters up to 6-th nearest neighbors. Based on this model Hamiltonian we calculate properties such as the critical (Curie) temperature and spin stiffness constant. We assume that the total exchangecorrelation energy functional is the same in the ferromagnetic ground state and the antiferromagnetic excited states. Our model parameters are based directly on ab initio calculations of the electronic structure. Our calculation yields good results compared with experimental values and earlier work. Some other physical quantities, related to the phase transition, and spin waves are also discussed. 2. Face-centered-tetragonal iron. If iron is grown on a proper substrate (e.g., Cu(100)), the crystal structure of the thin film displays a face-centered-tetragonal distortion due to the lattice constant misfit between the film and substrate. Therefore, we performed calculations for fct iron in its ferromagnetic, antiferromagnetic, and nonmagnetic phases for a wide range of values of the lattice parameters. In the ferromagnetic calculations, we found two minima in the total energy: one is close to.the bcc structure and the other (with a lower energy) is close to fcc. In the antiferromagnetic and nonmagnetic calculations, we found in each case that there is only one minimum near the fcc structure, providing us clear evidence that the antiferromagnetic and nonmagnetic states are (meta)stable near the fcc region and unstable in bcc region. The antiferromagnetic and nonmagnetic states are almost degenerate near the fcc minimum, but the antiferromagnetic phase has the lowest total energy in the whole fct region. Magnetic moments are also calculated for a variety of fct structures. Near the fcc minimum we found that two ferromagnetic phases co-exist, one with a low spin and one with a high spin. These results are consistent with experimental facts and other earlier calculations. Some structural properties, such as the elastic constants and the bulk modulus, are also studied and compared with experimental data and some earlier calculations.

Book excerpt: The book includes all main physical properties of d- and f-transition-metal systems and corresponding theoretical concepts. Special attention is paid to the theory of magnetism and transport phenomena. Some examples of non-traditional questions which are treated in detail in the book: the influence of density of states singularities on electron properties; many-electron description of strong itinerant magnetism; mechanisms of magnetic anisotropy; microscopic theory of anomalous transport phenomena in ferromagnets. Besides considering classical problems of solid state physics as applied to transition metals, modern developments in the theory of correlation effects in d- and f-compounds are considered within many-electron models. The book contains, where possible, a simple physical discussion. More difficult questions are considered in Appendices.

Book excerpt: This book is intended as a guide to the ab initio calculation of molecular structure and properties. It provides the necessary working information to enable the non-specialist to use and understand electronic structure methods and related computing technology, despite the high level of sophistication of quantum chemical methods. The initial chapters define and outline theoretical concepts, methods and computational approaches. Descriptive information and definitions of the terminology are given first; more detailed and mathematical explanations follow. These first chapters thus provide the background information needed to use the extensive literature of ab initio electronic structure theory. The next chapter first provides an overview of the technical issues relating to molecular properties, and then gives a rather detailed but general development. The latter part of this chapter is mainly intended for those first encountering the methodologies of properties determination and intending to pursue further developments. The other chapters provide reviews of calculations in the literature and assessments of factors influencing accuracy. The book is particularly useful to those who need a working understanding of ab initio calculations and well-suited to graduate students and researchers in computational and theoretical chemistry, researchers in electronic structure, spectroscopists and organic chemists.

This book highlights the extensive contributions that the DFT-based OLCAO method has made to progress in this field, and it demonstrates its competitiveness for performing ab initio calculations on large and complex models of practical systems. A brief historical account and introduction to the elements of the theory set the stage for discussions on semiconductors, insulators, crystalline metals and alloys, complex crystals, non-crystalline solids and liquids, microstructure containing systems and those containing impurities, defects, and surfaces, biomolecular systems, and the technique of ab initio core level spectroscopy calculation.

Book excerpt: Specialist Periodical Reports provide systematic and detailed review coverage of progress in the major areas of chemical research. Written by experts in their specialist fields the series creates a unique service for the active research chemist, supplying regular critical in-depth accounts of progress in particular areas of chemistry. For over 80 years the Royal Society of Chemistry and its predecessor, the Chemical Society, have been publishing reports charting developments in chemistry, which originally took the form of Annual Reports. However, by 1967 the whole spectrum of chemistry could no longer be contained within one volume and the series Specialist Periodical Reports was born. The Annual Reports themselves still existed but were divided into two, and subsequently three, volumes covering Inorganic, Organic and Physical Chemistry. For more general coverage of the highlights in chemistry they remain a 'must'. Since that time the SPR series has altered according to the fluctuating degree of activity in various fields of chemistry. Some titles have remained unchanged, while others have altered their emphasis along with their titles; some have been combined under a new name whereas others have had to be discontinued. The current list of Specialist Periodical Reports can be seen on the inside flap of this volume.

Book excerpt: This book undertakes an extensive exploration of manganese-based compounds, such as T1−xSrxMnO3 (T = La, Pr; x = 0.35, 0.25) using density functional theory and Monte Carlo simulations with a focus on understanding their electronic, magnetic, and magnetocaloric properties. Ba1−xSrxFeO3 (x = 0, 0.2) is also studied via different approximations, offering a comparative perspective. In addition, the book looks at the influence of magnetism using Monte Carlo simulations, revealing crucial parameters and examining the GdCrO3 system through DFT and Monte Carlo simulation, shedding light on recent experimental observations. Additionally, Monte Carlo studies investigate magnetic and magnetocaloric features of Sr2FeMoO6, La2SrMn2O7 bilayer manganite, perovskite ferromagnetic thin films' surface effects, and SmFe1−xMnxO3 perovskite. In essence, this book significantly advances our comprehension of magnetic and magnetocaloric phenomena across diverse materials and is well-suited for both experimentalists and computational researchers working in this field.

Book excerpt: We applied the locally self-consistent multiple scattering (LSMS) method to the study Fe-based bulk amorphous metals. The LSMS method is an order-N approach to the electronic structure calculation for solid state materials based on density functional theory and local density approximation. Using LSMS method, we performed electronic structure calculations for the supercell samples generated by ab-initio molecular dynamics simulation. The equilibrium atomic volume and the bulk modulus are calculated based on the energy versus volume curve. The magnetic moment distribution in the samples is determined for both collinear and noncollinear cases. A comparison with the experimental results is also made.
