Book excerpt: Volume 2 of Leading Issues in ICT Evaluation Research is a compilation of nine academic articles originally published in EJISE between 2010 and 2015. The articles were identified through a meta-analysis of information systems evaluation papers, undertaken by Professor Shaun Pather, editor of the Electronic Journal for Information Systems Evaluation (www.ejise.com). The analysis was based on the degree to which each articles advances the ICT evaluation body of knowledge with special emphasis on issues typical of the current inter-networked era. Thus, these articles, when considered as a whole, reflect the leading issues in the evaluation of Information Systems over the past five years, and are therefore invaluable to both the research and the business communities. This book further provides a global view of ICT evaluation with research perspectives highlighted from eight different countries. Each paper is accompanied by an insightful editorial commentary to highlight the importance of each article. These therefore set an important framework for future research in the forthcoming era.

The topics are from cryptocurrencies and their online exchanges in Poland to using the concept of blockchain in agribusiness, using virtual reality, creating knowledge and innovation in family businesses, the importance of social media in education, risk analysis, security and forensic science, and effective communication in enterprises. The monograph continues with topics of CRM/ERP implementation in SMEs in Poland, big data/agri-food industry and innovative solution for knowledge management, the impact of digital technologies on competences, digitization in agriculture, and the impact of merchandising on consumer behaviour. Although there is little connection in terms of reading structure form one chapter to the next, each chapter uniquely stands alone to offer insights into the topic it examines in a very simple and understandable manner.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The adoption of Information Technology (IT) and Information Systems (IS) represents significant financial investments, with alternative perspectives to the evaluation domain coming from both the public and private sectors. As a result of increasing IT/IS budgets and their growing significance within the development of an organizational infrastructure, the evaluation and performance measurement of new technology remains a perennial issue for management. This book offers a refreshing and updated insight into the social fabric and technical dimensions of IT/IS evaluation together with insights into approaches used to measure the impact of information systems on its stakeholders. In doing so, it describes the portfolio of appraisal techniques that support the justification of IT/IS investments. Evaluating Information Systems explores the concept of evaluation as an evolutionary and dynamic process that takes into account the ability of enterprise technologies to integrate information systems within and between organisations. In particular, when set against a backdrop of organisational learning. It examines the changing portfolio of benefits, costs and risks associated with the adoption and diffusion of technology in today's global marketplace. Finally approaches to impact assessment through performance management and benchmarking is discussed.

This book was released on 2017-12-08 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why do organizations adopt information systems? Is it just because of financial reasons, of concerns for efficiency? Or is it due to external pressures, such as competitor pressure, that an organization adopts an information system? And, how does the adoption take place? Is it a linear process, or is the process one of conflicts? Does a specific person govern this process, or do we have multiple parties involved? What happens if these conflicts occur among those involved? How does the organization move on and achieve a successful information system adoption? By investigating two organizations, one international academic journal and one South American manufacturing company, this thesis aims to investigate the whys and hows of information system adoption, and aims to contribute to the discourse on information system adoptions in small organizations – an often underrepresented segment in information system adoption literature. By adopting different theoretical lenses throughout the five research papers included, this body of work suggests that even when seemingly simple, information system adoptions can become rather complex. The cases reveal that the role of information systems and issues related to information system adoptions are often not well thought-out in the early days of the organization. The actors’ understandings of adoption and consequences mature and the information systems become more intertwined. Common use of stakeholder theory introduces general stakeholders and their interaction with the focal organization. The cases reveal that the adoption process involves multiple actors, even within what would initially appear as a stakeholder, and that those actors can be in conflict with each other. These conflicts often lead to negotiations, and the cases reveal that these negotiations are opportunities of learning; the actors engage with the information system and with each other, gaining new knowledge about the issues at hand. The dissertation argues that there are various social worlds in information system adoptions, and various factors – ranging from organizational structure to social norms – that often affect why and how the organization undergoes an adoption process. The multiple power relations and divergent interests of stakeholders in these adoption processes, and how information systems affect other parts of the organization, reinforce the need for a well thought-out, flexible and reflexive approach to information system adoptions.

Book excerpt: This book examines trends and challenges in research on IT governance in public organizations, reporting innovative research and new insights in the theories, models and practices within the area. As we noticed, IT governance plays an important role in generating value from organization’s IT investments. However there are different challenges for researchers in studying IT governance in public organizations due to the differences between political, administrative, and practices in these organizations. The first section of the book looks at Management issues, including an introduction to IT governance in public organizations; a systematic review of IT alignment research in public organizations; the role of middle managers in aligning strategy and IT in public service organizations; and an analysis of alignment and governance with regard to IT-related policy decisions. The second section examines Modelling, including a consideration of the challenges faced by public administration; a discussion of a framework for IT governance implementation suitable to improve alignment and communication between stakeholders of IT services; the design and implementation of IT architecture; and the adoption of enterprise architecture in public organizations. Finally, section three presents Case Studies, including IT governance in the context of e-government strategy implementation in the Caribbean; the relationship of IT organizational structure and IT governance performance in the IT department of a public research and education organization in a developing country; the relationship between organizational ambidexterity and IT governance through a study of the Swedish Tax Authorities; and the role of institutional logics in IT project activities and interactions in a large Swedish hospital.
