This book was released on 2010 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: The kinetics of long-range electron transfer through self-assembled monolayers of n-alkanethiols and n-alkaneselenols (SAMs) was studied via voltammetry of hexaammineruthenium (III) on a hanging mercury drop electrode (HMDE). Electron tunneling rates across the both monolayer films decay exponentially with thickness with a tunneling coefficient [beta] = 1.1 per CH2. Gradual additions of aliphatic alcohols to the solution result in a decrease of the long-range electron transfer rate, by a maximum of 7-fold, dependent upon the alcohol concentration, but independent of the thickness of the n-alkanethiol monolayer (SAM) and the alcohol's chain length. The mechanism involving competitive adsorption of the alcohol on the SAM surface is proposed to interpret the kinetic data. Electron tunneling rates across n-alkanethiol monolayers are approximately 4-fold larger than the rates measured on n-alkaneselenol monolayers containing the same number of carbon atoms signifying the importance of head-group contact in electron transfer through SAMs.

Download or read book Kinetics of Mediated Electron Transfer Between Viologen Groups in a Self-Assembled Monolayer and Metal Complexes in Solution written by and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Self-assembled monolayers are used in an experimental configuration which allows the extraction of the cross reaction electron exchange rate constant for the electron transfer between a viologen group embedded within the SAM and a metal complex in solution. This cross reaction rate constant is compared with predictions from the Marcus theory using the cross reaction relation and the known self-exchange rate constants for the two reagents. The results reveal that the intrinsic barrier to the electron transfer is relatively unchanged in the SAM, while the rate constant is somewhat depressed due to the long distance over which the electron must transfer, Electrochemistry, Marcus theory, Cross reaction.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Molecular electronics have been attracting tremendous interest in recent years. One of the basic questions remaining unanswered, however, in this field is how to determine the "conductivity" of molecules. Conventional methods for measuring electron transport properties through metal-molecule-metal junctions lack the precise descriptions of the contact properties in the junction. Consequently, the "conductivities" of molecules reported in the literature are not consistent. In this dissertation we report a new experimental method for measuring relatively small differences in electron tunneling through two distinct monolayers. We place them side by side using scanning probe nanolithography and compare the tunneling currents by conductive probe atomic force microscopy under identical force, voltage, and tip contamination conditions. We demonstrate the validity of our approach by applying it to two isomeric molecules with similar length and functional groups, with only the position of two functional groups, one aromatic and the other aliphatic, being inverted with respect to each other. The relative values of the two tunneling currents, calculated using density functional theory in the Tersoff-Hamann approach, compare very well with the experimental data, providing us with an example of theory vs experiment agreement that is rather uncommon in this field.
