Book excerpt: The surface properties of atmospheric aerosol particles largely control their impact on climate by affecting their ability to uptake water, react heterogeneously, and nucleate ice in clouds. However, in the vacuum of a conventional electron microscope, the native surface structure often undergoes chemical rearrangement resulting in surfaces that are quite different from their atmospheric configurations. Herein, we report the development of a cryo-TEM approach where sea spray aerosol particles are flash frozen in their native state and then probed by electron microscopy. This unique approach allows for the detection of not only mixed salts, but also soft materials including whole hydrated bacteria, diatoms, virus particles, marine vesicles, as well as gel networks within hydrated salt droplets. As a result, we anticipate this method will open up a new avenue of analysis for aerosol particles, not only for ocean-derived aerosols, but for those produced from other sources where there is interest in the transfer of organic or biological species from the biosphere to the atmosphere.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Quantifying how atmospheric particles interact with water vapor is critical for understanding the effects of aerosols on climate. We present a novel method to measure the mass-based hygroscopicity of particles while characterizing their elemental and carbon functional group compositions. Since mass-based hygroscopicity is insensitive to particle geometry, it is advantageous for probing the hygroscopic behavior of atmospheric particles, which can have irregular morphologies. Combining scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive X-ray analysis (SEM/EDX), scanning transmission X-ray microscopy (STXM) analysis, and in situ STXM humidification experiments, this method was validated using laboratory-generated, atmospherically relevant particles. Then, the hygroscopicity and elemental composition of 15 complex atmospheric particles were analyzed by leveraging quantification of C, N, and O from STXM, and complementary elemental quantification from SEM/EDX. We found three types of hygroscopic responses, and correlated high hygroscopicity with Na and Cl content. The mixing state of 158 other particles from the sample broadly agreed with those of the humidified particles, indicating the potential to infer atmospheric hygroscopic behavior from a selected subset of particles. As a result, these methods offer unique quantitative capabilities to characterize and correlate the hygroscopicity and chemistry of individual submicrometer atmospheric particles.

Book excerpt: Electron microprobe analysis was applied to the chemical identification of the airborne particles characteristic of air pollution contaminants. A conventional AMR Electron Microprobe and a Philips EM200 Electron Microscope equipped with an AMR X-ray Spectrometer attachment were employed to investigate size-fractioned samples of laboratory generated aerosol particles of Na Cl and Zn (NH4)2 (SO4)2, as well as specific pollution sources, e.g. Los Angeles Smog and Auto Exhaust. The effect of instrument variables, including electron beam size, acceleration potential, and beam current was determined for particles ranging in size from 3mu to 0.5mu. X-ray Spectral Patterns obtained from Los Angeles Smog particles are presented and inherent limitations in the analytical technique are also discussed. Scanning Electron Microscopy was empoloyed as a supplement to conventional Electron Microscopy and was found to furnish valuable information on the nature of the particulates.

Book excerpt: In this article, the potential of a thermophoretic sampling device to derive quantitative particle size distributions and number concentrations of aerosols based on microscopic single particle analysis is explored. For that purpose a plate-to-plate thermophoretic precipitator to collect ultrafine atmospheric particles for TEM (transmission electron microscopy) analysis has been calibrated and characterized. The representativeness of the samples has been verified in a series of experiments. Results show that, for particles with diameters of 15 nm to 300 nm, the precipitator's collection efficiency is independent of size, shape, and composition of the particles. Hence, its samples accurately represent the original aerosol. A numerical model of thermophoretic deposition within the device has been developed and tailored to the specifications of the precipitator. The model has been used to derive the particle number density and size distribution of several calibration aerosols using the TEM analysis of the samples taken with the thermophoretic precipitator as input parameters. The results agree very well with the on-line measurements of the calibration aerosols. This work demonstrates that our thermophoretic sampling device can be used to derive quantitative particle size distributions and number concentrations of ultrafine particles based on microscopic single particle analysis.

Book excerpt: Levels of air pollutants in the Vaal Triangle area have been a cause of public concern for a number of years. A pilot study was launched with the purpose of developing standard operating procedures for the sampling, bulk inorganic and organic chemical analysis, and single-particle analysis of airborne particulates from this region, as well as statistical data handling procedures. Guidelines set by the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for the Receptor Model as applied to the source apportionment of airborne particulates is adhered to in this instance. Samples of airborne particulate pollutants from four sites in the Vereeniging area were subjected to single-particle analysis by energy-dispersive X-ray-fluorescence analysis and image-analysis using a scanning electron microscope. Nineteen chemical and five physical parameters were measured. Two sub-sets of data were distinguished on the basis of particle size, and each was subjected to various cluster-analysis procedures. Seventeen chemical species were identified in each sub-set of data. These species were further subdivided on the morphological characteristics, and allocated to one or more source categories. It is anticipated that, as source profiles become better established, better source apportionment will be possible.

Book excerpt: Cloud physics has achieved such a voluminous literature over the past few decades that a significant quantitative study of the entire field would prove unwieldy. This book concentrates on one major aspect: cloud microphysics, which involves the processes that lead to the formation of individual cloud and precipitation particles. Common practice has shown that one may distinguish among the following addi tional major aspects: cloud dynamics, which is concerned with the physics respon sible for the macroscopic features of clouds; cloud electricity, which deals with the electrical structure of clouds and the electrification processes of cloud and precipi tation particles; and cloud optics and radar meteorology, which describe the effects of electromagnetic waves interacting with clouds and precipitation. Another field intimately related to cloud physics is atmospheric chemistry, which involves the chemical composition ofthe atmosphere and the life cycle and characteristics of its gaseous and particulate constituents. In view of the natural interdependence of the various aspects of cloud physics, the subject of microphysics cannot be discussed very meaningfully out of context. Therefore, we have found it necessary to touch briefly upon a few simple and basic concepts of cloud dynamics and thermodynamics, and to provide an account of the major characteristics of atmospheric aerosol particles. We have also included a separate chapter on some of the effects of electric fields and charges on the precipitation-forming processes.

This book was released on 1973 with total page 205 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A high volume sampling system, employing Nuclepore filters and designed for sampling particulate in the plumes from industrial sources using a light aircraft, is described. The effluent of kraft paper mills was sampled using this system and then analyzed by electron microscopy. Size distributions of particles were obtained at several points downwind in the plume from a kraft mill. The size distribution close into the stack was log normal. There was a statistically significant reduction in median particle size a mile to two miles downwind of the stack. Also, the size distribution deviated from log normal. Several possible mechanisms are postulated as causes for this phenomena. Plume dilution with particles of smaller average size appeared to be a significant factor in causing the decrease. The median particle size close to the kraft mill was about 0. 35 micrometers. At downwind points it was found to be as low as 0. 15 micrometers. Chemical identification of kraft mill particles was accomplished using electron diffraction techniques. Kraft mill salt cake was identified in particulate samples collected as far downwind from the mill as eight miles. Sodium sulfate (Na2SO4) and calcium carbonate (CaCO3) particles were both identified. Morphological associations were made with chemical identity. Sodium sulfate morphology was related to sampling technique. Due to the presence of water in the plume this compound appeared to have been fluid when sampled, and to have crystallized as a hydrate in a flat, smeared form on the filter. Calcium carbonate was a relatively large flaky particle appearing in both anhydrous and hydrated forms. Approximately 100 electron micrographs including both transmission and scanning micrographs are presented which support the sizing and morphological results.
