Book excerpt: Ces dernières années, de fortes recommandations ont été émises concernant les rejets des métaux lourds et l’impact éventuel d’éléments tels que le zinc sur l’environnement. L’utilisation abondante de cet élément notamment dans le domaine de la durabilité des structures métalliques a menée à des taux de rejets de zinc liés à l’activité humaine dans les eaux fluviales et les zones portuaires qui atteignent des doses critiques pour l’environnement. Indépendamment de la nature du revêtement sacrificiel à base de zinc, il est aussi nécessaire de réaliser des traitements de surface pour assurer l’aspect esthétique des produits revêtus, une amélioration supplémentaire de la résistance à la corrosion à vocation esthétique et/ou protectrice comme le chrome. Cependant, les nouvelles directives européennes et nationales de plus en plus exigeantes restreignent l’utilisation de Cr(VI), qui doit être abandonnée et remplacée par des méthodes plus écologiques. Ainsi, la nouvelle génération des méthodes alternatives consiste à déposer des composés de terres rares et plus particulièrement des oxydes de cérium (CeO2) qui pourraient conférer une très bonne protection grâce à leur action comme film passif. L’objet de cette étude est axé sur l’élaboration par électrodéposition, la caractérisation et les propriétés physico-chimiques des couches minces d’oxyde de cérium sur des revêtements à base de zinc. Pour cela, l’étude a été menée sur des substrats modèles de zinc pur ainsi que sur des revêtements électrodéposés de zinc allié. Les caractérisations effectuées ont montré l’influence de certains paramètres de l’électrodéposition (densité de courant, temps, concentration, additif et courants pulsés) sur les mécanismes mis en jeu et donc sur la morphologie et la composition des films. Le comportement des revêtements électrodéposés vis-à-vis de la corrosion en milieu aqueux a également été étudié en combinant des essais d’immersion et des tests accélérés de corrosion (brouillard salin). Si les différents essais ont montré que ces films agissent comme une barrière physique bloquant la diffusion de l’oxygène, leur efficacité semble fortement dépendantes des conditions d’élaboration des revêtements.

Book excerpt: L'objectif de ce travail est d'élaborer par voie électrochimique un film de polypyrrole sur l'acier inoxydable 304 à partir d'un électrolyte support d'acide phosphorique et d'améliorer sa résistance à la corrosion par l'utilisation d'ondes ultrasonores haute fréquence (US) et l'incorporation d'un inhibiteur inorganique (KNO3) et de particules de silice (SiO2). L'inhibiteur inorganique a réduit le potentiel d'oxydation du monomère et a été incorporé dans la chaîne polymérique. Les ultrasons ont favorisé la réaction d'électropolymérisation en augmentant le transport des espèces électroactives vers l'électrode. Ils ont engendré des films plus compacts, présentant une topographie plus fine et plus homogène. Les films composites PPy-SiO2 ont été élaborés par différentes méthodes. Une bonne répartition des particules dans la chaîne polymérique a été obtenue avec la méthode multicouche. Tous les films élaborés : PPy-NO3-, PPy-US et PPy-SiO2 offrent une meilleure protection de l'acier inoxydable contre la corrosion en milieu chloruré que le revêtement PPy.

Book excerpt: The book intends to give a state-of-the-art overview of flexoelectricity, a linear physical coupling between mechanical (orientational) deformations and electric polarization, which is specific to systems with orientational order, such as liquid crystals. Chapters written by experts in the field shed light on theoretical as well as experimental aspects of research carried out since the discovery of flexoelectricity. Besides a common macroscopic (continuum) description the microscopic theory of flexoelectricity is also addressed. Electro-optic effects due to or modified by flexoelectricity as well as various (direct and indirect) measurement methods are discussed. Special emphasis is given to the role of flexoelectricity in pattern-forming instabilities. While the main focus of the book lies in flexoelectricity in nematic liquid crystals, peculiarities of other mesophases (bent-core systems, cholesterics, and smectics) are also reviewed. Beginning with Volume 13, the printing and dissemination phases of the ac· tivity were transferred to University Microfilms/Xerox of Ann Arbor, Michigan, with the thought that such an arrangement would be more beneficial to the academic and general scientific and technical community. After five years of this joint undertaking we had concluded that it was in the interest of all concerned if the printing and distribution of the volume were handled by an international publishing house to assure improved service and broader dissemination. Hence, starting with Volume 18, Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences has been disseminated on a worldwide basis by Plenum Publishing Corporation of New York, and in the same year the coverage was broadened to include Canadian universities. All back issues can also be ordered from Plenum. We have reported in Volume 20 (thesis year 1975) a total of 10,374 theses titles from 28 Canadian and 239 United States universities. We are sure that this broader base for theses titles reported will greatly enhance the value of this important annual reference work. The organization of Volume 20 is identical to that of past years. It consists of theses titles arranged by discipline and by university within each discipline.
