Owing to the distance of 350 feet between the treated and control plats, the wind would have to be nearly due south to carry any appreciable charge over the control plat. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Electro-Horticulture Electricity is analogous to heat and light, and, like them, has an influence upon the growth of plants. What this is, it is the purpose of the author to inquire into with his readers by presenting to them a summary of what has been accomplished in the comparatively new science of electro-horticulture, and by discussing with them the rationale of the action of electricity upon vegetation. That he may afford assistance to some who are already at work, and possibly influence others to investigate into this fascinating subject, is his sole motive in offering to the public this monograph. He has had in view the popular rather than the scientific aspect of the subject, and hence has limited himself to what he felt would most appeal to the average reader. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Electricity in Agriculture and Horticulture The cause of the astonishing development of vegetation under such conditions has hitherto been held to lie in the long day, which lasts from two to three months in these regions during their short summer. It is further sometimes supposed that this circumstance will provide the crops with more light and heat, the principal factors of vegetation. This is, however, not true, for calculation shows that the quantity, notwithstanding this long day, is less than it is, for instance, in 60 deg. Of latitude. In consequence of the low height of the sun over the horizon, the rays meet the earth in such an oblique direction that their illuminating and heating power is greatly lessened, and this power is also lessened by the great absorption in the atmosphere. Since the quantities of light and heat received are relatively smaller than in more southern regions, the cause of the rich development of the vegetables cannot lie in the long day, and must be sought elsewhere. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Practical Electro-Therapeutics While our conception of the nature of electricity is largely theoretical, we by no means lack positive knowledge con cerning its actions and the laws that govern them. Great progress has been made in utilizing this agent in the arts, and by means of electro-therapeutics maladies are now cured that were formerly not amenable to treatment. There is only one kind of electricity, no matter how gen crated, but its actions vary widely according to the current and instrument used in employing. It. Investigators have demonstrated that both animal and veg etable life are due to and dependent upon electric conditions and it is more than likely that the organs of active nutrition give rise to electric currents. It is also true that animal organs and tissues are modified and influenced by electricity. There are many reasons why the work of the nervous system should be compared with the complex workings of an electrical battery. In health the nerves are all in a state of vibration, due in all probability to the electrical currents which traverse the body in every direction. When it loses its vibratory function, death and degeneration ensue. The various nerves respond to different vibrations. The optic nerve responds to very rapid vibrations, while large waves stimulate the nerves of the ear, etc. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Electricity in Electro-Therapeutics The method Of treatment adopted throughout the book in the description Of electro-technics has been the circuital method that is to say, all the phenomena Of electricity and magnetism have been considered as pertaining either to the electrostatic, the electric, or the magnetic circuit, and the laws Of these three circuits have been developed upon analogous lines. The authors believe that this treatment is the key-note to a clear comprehension of the numerous and Often complex electro magnetic phenomena met with in the application Of electricity to electro-thera peutics. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Essentials of Modern Electro-Therapeutics: An Elementary Text-Book on the Scientific Therapeutic Use of Electricity and Radiant Energy F int - Many consider electro-therapy as a Special school or form of sectarianism and avoid it as irregular practice. Second. - The extravagant claims of quacks and misguided enthusiasts, and the unscientific character of many of the articles on electro-therapeutics which have appeared in con temporary medical journals, have disgusted many of the more conservative members of the profession. Third - The absence of a simple and reliable elementary text-book has been the greatest, and in some cases, the only reason for the exclusion of electro-therapeutics from the curricula of medical schools. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An International System of Electro-Therapeutics: For Students, General Practitioners, and Specialists In connection with these observations he mentions two hypotheses (1) that the current, on account of its enormous frequency, passes by the surface of the body as such currents are known to do with other con ductors, and (2) that the sensitive and motor nerves are so organized as to respond only to vibrations of a definite frequency, in the same way that the terminations of the optic nerve are' blind for undulations Of the ether of a period less than 497 billions per second (red), or more than 728 billions per second (violet). He rejects the surface theory so far as the animal body is concerned, and, though he passed currents of 3000 milliamperes, he explained their harmlessness by absence of excitation, or, rather, on the hypothesis that these currents exercise, on the nervous centres and muscles, an inhibitory action of the kind studied by Dr. Brown-sequ'ard; and he considers that this inhibitory action is shown by some of the phenomena above described.
