Book excerpt: These volumes of Materials Science Forum contain selected papers presented at the Sixth International Symposium on Electrochemical Methods in Corrosion Research. The focal points was the industrial application of electrochemical methods for corrosion testing and monitoring as well as for corrosion prediction, prevention and control. Special emphasis was placed on the availability and reliability of test methods for improving the quality of metallic materials and their industrial applicability, as well as on the equipment to be used to this end. Nevertheless, fundamental research was also covered by a large number of papers. The volumes will be invaluable to corrosion scientists, technologists and technicians, and others working in established areas related to corrosion mechanisms, corrosion protection, corrosion testing and monitoring. They will also provide an up-to-date guide to new or improved electrochemical methods for fundamental research, as well as the latest results obtained using currently available electrochemical methods. 1. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present volume of Modern Aspects of Electrochemistry is composed of four chapters covering topics having relevance both in corrosion science and materials engineering. All of the chapters provide comprehensive coverage of recent advances in corrosion science. The first chapter, by Maurice and Marcus, provides a comprehensive review on the structural aspects and anti-corrosion properties of passive films on metals and alloys. These authors look at recent experimental data collected by in-situ microscopic techniques coupled with electrochemical methods. A detailed description is given of the nucleation and growth of 2-dimensional passive films at earlier stages, their effect on the corrosion properties of metal surfaces, and the nanostructures of- dimensional passive films. On the basis of the experimental data reviewed, the authors present a model for passivity breakdown and pit initiation, which takes into account the preferential role of grain boundaries. In Chapter 2, Takahashi and his co-workers give a specialized account on the electrochemical and structural properties of anodic oxide films formed on aluminum. In addition to the electrochemical corrosion-related problems of anodic oxide films, the chapter reviews state-of-the-art research of nano-/mic- fabrications based on anodizing treatments combined with chemical/mechanical processes such as laser irradiation, atomic force micro-probe processing and thin film deposition techniques.

Munoz and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2020-11-25 with total page 127 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This special issue of Corrosion Engineering Science and Technology is dedicated to the study of corrosion of objects from historical sites. The issue contains contributions from the 2009 EUROCORR session on Corrosion of Archaeological and Heritage Artefacts organised by the European Federation of Corrosion's working party and commissioned articles on other key issues. The objective is to give the reader a broad understanding of corrosion of ancient materials, for the most part metal but also glass. Articles shed light on a range of analytical approaches related to the study of the complex systems that make up historical artifacts. In order to arrive at an understanding of the nanometric organisation of rust layers and interphases, such studies must be approached on a macroscopic scale. Techniques used include; macrophotography, synchrotron radiation and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) that ensure results that are both exhaustive and representative of particular observations. This issue demonstrates the wealth of approaches possible in the study of the corrosion of ancient materials.
