Book excerpt: Excerpt from State Mining Laws on the Use of Electricity in and About Coal Mines The first State to have a coal-mining law was Pennsylvania, which enacted a law, for Schuylkill County only, in 1869. The first State to enact a coal-mining law governing all the coal mines in the State was Illinois in 1872, followed by Ohio in 1873. Pennsylvania in 1870 enacted a law for anthracite mines only, but did not enact similar laws for bituminous mines until 1877. At least 10 other States enacted coal-mining laws between the years 1870 and 1890. Before 1890 electricity was little used in coal-mining operations and therefore practically no provisions governing the installation, inspection, or maintenance of electrical equipment were made in any of the laws enacted up to 1890. In the law of Colorado, approved April 8, 1885, there is a reference to the use of telephones, probably the first reference to electrical equipment of any kind in a State mining code. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Electricity in Coal Mining Many good engineering handbooks are to be found dealing with the details of electrical construction and the installation of mining machinery but the writer feels that there maybe a demand for a small treatise covering, in a general way, the many phases of electrical engineering as applied to coal mining. Such a book would probably be of use to the investor or the operator in outlining methods of procedure and to the operating engineer in tracing the foundations upon which an electrical power plant may be established and operated in the most efficient manner. In securing data upon which some of the machinery is described and for many of the photographs from which cuts have been made the writer wishes to acknowledge the help of the General Electric Co., Westinghouse Electric and Manufacturing Co., Goodman Manufacturing Co., Jeffrey Machine Co., and other manufacturers who have assisted in the work. The writer also wishes to acknowledge his indebtedness to the Editors of Coal Age for manuscript corrections and to the McGraw-Hill Book Co. Inc., for the able manner in which the work of publishing has been carried out. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Hand Firing Soft Coal Under Power-Plant Boilers The Bureau -of Mines is making tests to determine how fuels can be used most efficiently for different purposes. This report contains descriptions of methods of firing soft coal under power-plant boilers and of methods of handling fire so as to have the least smoke and to get the most heat from the fuel. These descriptions are followed by discussions of the process of combustion and of the principal heat losses in an average power plant, because these discussions help to explain the reasons for the methods that are recommended. These methods have been tested in many plants by the writer when he was employed as fuel engineer by a large coal company. The descriptions and discussions are so arranged that each chapter is a complete unit and can be read by itself. Flue-gas analysis and its use in the operation of boiler furnaces are not treated in this paper, but will be discussed in another paper to be published by the Bureau of Mines. This paper seeks to meet the needs of the men, many without a technical education, who are employed in small plants of to horsepower capacity. For this reason the language used is plain and simple, and technical terms have been avoided as far as possible. However, it is difficult to describe a chemical process, such as the combustion of coal, without using chemical terms, but such terms as are used are explained in the text and also in the short glossary at the end of the report. Book excerpt: Since the late 18th century, when it emerged as a source of heating and, later, steam power, coal has brought untold benefits to mankind. Even today, coal generates almost 45 percent of the world's power. Our modern technological society would be inconceivable without coal and the energy it provides. Unfortunately, that society will not survive unless we wean ourselves off coal. The largest single source of greenhouse gases, coal is responsible for 43 percent of the world's carbon emissions. Richard Martin, author of SuperFuel, argues that to limit catastrophic climate change, we must find a way to power our world with less polluting energy sources, and we must do it in the next couple of decades—or else it is "game over." It won't be easy: as coal plants shut down across the United States, and much of Europe turns to natural gas, coal use is growing in the booming economies of Asia— particularly China and India. Even in Germany, where nuclear power stations are being phased out in the wake of the Fukushima accident, coal use is growing. Led by the Sierra Club and its ambitious "Beyond Coal" campaign, environmentalists hope to drastically reduce our dependence on coal in the next decade. But doing so will require an unprecedented contraction of an established, lucrative, and politically influential worldwide industry. Big Coal will not go gently. And its decline will dramatically change lives everywhere—from Appalachian coal miners and coal company executives to activists in China's nascent environmental movement. Based on a series of journeys into the heart of coal land, from Wyoming to West Virginia to China's remote Shanxi Province, hundreds of interviews with people involved in, or affected by, the effort to shrink the industry, and deep research into the science, technology, and economics of the coal industry, Coal Wars chronicles the dramatic stories behind coal's big shutdown—and the industry's desperate attempts to remain a global behemoth. A tour de force of literary journalism, Coal Wars will be a milestone in the climate change battle.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Public Lighting: By Gas and Electricity The scheme of the present work has been to collect together a series of representative facts relating to the production and utilisation of light for public use, whether by means of coal gas or electricity. In such a connection auxiliary methods, such as the use of acetylene and petroleum, could not be passed over, and therefore are included. It would have been impossible to comprise full details of all adjuncts relating to thwe several subjects within the compass of a volume of the present size, and therefore much interesting matter has necessarily been left out, but it is hoped that the essential features have been indicated with sufficient clearness. The reader who desires to follow the various processes involved in the production of either coal gas or electricity, af r reading the introductory accounts herein given, will doubtless continue their study in the more strictly technical text-books. The accounts given of the results of actual working operations will, it is believed, be of no little interest, particularly the full information afforded in the valuable reports by Mr. Bellamy, City Lighting Engineer of Liverpool, whose work in this direction has deservedly gained the approbation of all those who have followed its progress Probably in no other town has public lighting been more successfully and economically studied and carried into effect. The particulars relating tothe progress which has been made in the production and utilisation of electricity is well exemplified in the case of Bristol, where the important factor of the day-load has received much attention, resulting in a striking success. A feature of the present work which will, it is hoped, be of much assistance to those having charge of public lighting is the valuable series of tables, giving full particulars of the systems employed in a large number of representative towns both in America and England. The author has to express his sincere thanks to the various authorities referred to, who have in every case kindly revised the proof sheets, thereby bringing them up to date and ensuring their correctness. Sincere thanks are due to those gentlemen who have kindly supplied illustrations for the work and assisted with much valuable information.
