Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Electricity as a Fire Hazard We cannot but believe that the losses from fire, legitimately traceable to electric currents, have been due to the ignorance rather than the negligence of those in charge of such plants, and that, if the true limitations of conductors carrying currents were better known, electrical fires would become a thing of the past. That electricity can be distributed safely is admitted even by the fire underwriters, but it took them a long time to make up their minds to the fact. While the fire underwriters may be looked upon in some quarters as enemies to electric lighting, we believe that all well-informed and right-thinking members of the electrical community are in accord with their efforts to secure proper electric installation; and, while the insurance regulations may err on the side of safety, the public, after all, benefit thereby in the long run. As Mr. Jenks shows, the apparent excessive factor of safety called for by the underwriters' rules is demanded by reason of the fact that in many cases conductors are, after a time, called upon for service far in excess of that for which they were originally designed - and this without any attempt at fraud or deception. It is too much to hope that complete immunity from electrical fires can be obtained, even under the best system of rules; but, when the early and defective installations are finally remodeled, it is safe to say that an electrical fire will be a rare occurrence. What is really now needed is that the various rules governing electrical installations should be brought to the point of harmony and uniformity. In some respects they now disagree and conflict, but there should be no trouble in making them support each other alike in letter and spirit. Such uniform rules would sound the death knell of bad work. The "World's Fair" of last year was responsible for many congresses and social gatherings of various orders being held in the far-famed city of the West. It was only fitting, therefore, that the insurance underwriters of the States, amongst others, should assemble in congress within the precincts of the great show, and thus happily combine pleasure with business. It was also no doubt right and proper that in the midst of their festivities, like the Egyptians of old, they should be reminded of more serious matters, and, perhaps, as a shocker, nothing more suitable could have been paraded than that well-worn skeleton - the "electrical fire hazard." For, rightly or wrongly, the fire underwriter does largely attribute his heavy losses of late years in the States to the electrical fiend. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers a comprehensive approach to the assessment of fire hazards of electrical cables. The first part of the book describes division of cables, main parameters of electrical cables, and fault scenarios of cables leading to fire or occupant injuries. The traditional approach to fire hazards of electrical cables assessment is also described in the first part. The second part of the book is focused on the creation and description of a new approach to fire hazard assessment of electrical cables. The new approach is based on the assessment of both ignition parameters of electrical cables and the impact of their fires on the surrounding area. The ignition parameters include critical heat flux, ignition temperature, and critical electrical current. The impact of cable fires on the surrounding area is expressed by the released heat, toxicity of combustion products (determined by the amount of released carbon oxides and oxygen consumed), and visibility (determined by the smoke extinction area). Newly created approach is practically illustrated on specific types of cables (power cables classified to B2ca and Fca reaction to fire class) in this book. The book is intended mainly for academics in the fields of both fire protection engineering and electrical engineering. Besides that, the professionals in fire safety will find valuable information concerning impact of electrical cables on the safety of occupants and structures during fire in the book. In addition, the book sheds light on the issue of fire safety of electrical cables for the professionals in both electrical and power engineering. Last but not least, the book is appropriate also for students in the fields of fire, electrical, and power engineering in bachelor, master, and Ph.D. degree.

Book excerpt: Providing a concise overview of lithium-ion (Li-ion) battery energy storage systems (ESSs), this book also presents the full-scale fire testing of 100 kilowatt hour (kWh) Li-ion battery ESSs. It details a full-scale fire testing plan to perform an assessment of Li-ion battery ESS fire hazards, developed after a thorough technical study. It documents the results of the testing plan including external and internal ignition testing, ESS positioning, temperature and heat flux measurements, pressure measurement, weather meters, and data acquisition systems. A comprehensive literature review and gap analysis reveal the current state of research into this vital aspect of energy storage. The authors cover the characteristics and hazards of Li-ion batteries, their anatomy and design, commercial and residential ESSs, historical fire incidents, and ESS codes and regulations. Researchers and professionals working in fire protection engineering, battery systems engineering, or energy storage will find this book a useful example of a fire testing plan. The results of the hazard assessment offer insights for those involved in electrical, fire, and building codes, as well as practitioners in design standards and fire testing.

Book excerpt: Significant loss to business occurs through fires in the workplace. Whether large or small, fire causes personal suffering, damage to plant, equipment and buildings, and loss of business. Fire legislation has changed over the past few years, especially with the introduction of European Directives. New regulations mean that employers have to carry out fire risk assessment and then, as a result of their findings, put in place control measures to prevent loss of life. Fire Hazards in Industry has been designed to cover, in general terms, exactly what is required of employers. It is written in simple language and considers the basics of good fire safety management. After reading Fire Hazards in Industry, any employer, safety professional or fire safety officer should be able to install a system for carrying out fire risk assessment. In addition to sections relating to the legal aspects of fire prevention, the book explains the concepts of fire modelling, explosions and combustion reactions. There is also a section relating to common industry fire hazards and hazards associated with electrical equipment. Knowledge of all these topics would be required if a person were to attempt to carry out fire risk assessment. Throughout the book, past case histories are used to illustrate certain aspects of fire and the causes of fire. The cases used have all been published by the Health and Safety Executive as a result of their investigations. These include; Abbeystead, Frodingham steelworks, HMS Glasgow, BP Grangemouth and many more. This book will be equally relevant to motor manufacturing as it is to the chemical industry. There are many case studies included that deal with fire hazards that are found in general industry.Fire Hazards in Industry is suitable for those who have relatively limited experience in fire safety and therefore use it as part of their career and educational development, but also can be used as reference material for those experienced professionals who have fire safety included in their day to day responsibility.

Book excerpt: This engineering guide provides a methodology to define and quantify the fire development andensuing conditions within the room of fire origin from the fire’s incipient stage through its fulldevelopment. The approach presented in this guide was developed using the framework set forthin the SFPE Engineering Guide to Performance-Based Fire Protection. 2nd ed., Quincy, Mass.:National Fire Protection Association, 2007.)It consists of three distinct parts: 1. Approach selection2. Input definition and data collection3. Results computation Specifically, this guide was developed for use as a means to implement the requirements presented in Chapter 10 of the SFPE Engineering Guide to Performance-Based Fire Protection. However, material within this guide has broader applicability and is therefore not limited to performance-based design applications.
