This volume contains 64 papers presented at the conference held in Wroctaw, Poland, September 22-25, 1981. Twenty-one were invited talks. About 100 participants from 13 countries attended the meeting during four days of lecture presentation (note these two numbers have been constant for the last two conferences). The conference consisted of sessions devoted to the investigation of crystalline electric fields and structural effects by spectroscopic techniques, neutron diffraction, magnetic, thermodynamic and electrical measurements all over broad temperature, magnetic field and pressure ranges. Materials investigated included rare earth intermetallics, hydrides, diluted systems and actinides, and among them some exhibited singlet ground state behavior. Methods of characterization and analysis of the multiferroic properties with in situ electric fields are induced to detect the direct magnetoelectric (ME) coupling. A switchable and non-volatile electric field control of magnetization in CoFeB/PMN-PT(001) structures is observed at room temperature, and the mechanism of direct coupling between the ferroelectric domain and ferromagnetic film due to the combined action of 109° ferroelastic domain switching in PMN-PT and the absence of magnetocrystalline anisotropy in CoFeB is demonstrated. Moreover, the electric-field control of giant magnetoresistance is achieved in a CoFeB-based spin valve deposited on top of (011) oriented PMN-PT, which offers an avenue for implementing electric-writing and magnetic-reading random access memory at room temperature. Readers will learn the basic properties of multiferroic materials, many useful techniques related to characterizing multiferroics and the interesting ME effect in CoFeB/PMN-PT structures, which is significant for applications.

Book excerpt: The anomalously high electron temperature in the lower ionosphere (E-region) cannot be attributed to photoelectrons (Spencer and Brace, 1965). In this report, it is shown that electric fields due to charge separation in the dynamo region provide adequate energy for this purpose. Application of the formula for the velocity distribution of the electrons in crossed electric and magnetic fields (Sen and Wyller, 1960) to the observational data gives electric fields perpendicular to the magnetic field of intensity about 20 to 40 V/km. This is an order of magnitude higher than that obtained in the current dynamo theory. A theory of the origin of the electric field in charge separation due to neutral wind drag is given. The theory leads to the right order of magnitude estimate of the dimensions of ionospheric irregularities. Another likely source for the electric field is where the solar wind meets the magnetosphere (magnetopause). It is shown that a field approx. 1 V/m can build up in the magnetospheric plasma sheath, as in a discharge tube, and be conducted down into the ionosphere along the lines of magnetic force. It is further shown that an electric field of this magnitude can cause the requisite auroral particle acceleration and sheath current for the main phase of magnetic storms. (Author).
