This book was released on 2007 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: (Cont.) The lattice dynamics above T 2were characterized by inelastic x-ray scattering measurements. By analyzing the data in terms of a damped harmonic oscillator response function, we are able to extract the phonon frequency and damping for all observed modes. We find a longitudinal acoustic phonon branch whose damping increases for q-vectors close to the zone boundary, which is also associated with an apparent softening of the frequency. Both of these anharmonic effects increase as T2 is approached, and are consistent with a soft phonon description of the dimerization. The anomalous phonon damping and softening are then analyzed using the Cross & Fisher theory of spin-phonon interaction leading to a spin-Peierls transition. We find that the theory succeeds in describing the data for a narrow temperature range about Tc2, for q near the zone boundary. It does not account for the anharmonic effects observed at high temperatures. Our experimental analysis represents one of the most in-depth quantitative tests of the Cross & Fisher theory to date. In addition our results suggest that TiOCl is a particularly ideal realization of a spin-Peierls system.

Download or read book Electron Dynamics by Inelastic X-Ray Scattering written by Winfried Schuelke and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2007-06-21 with total page 608 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Knowledge of the dynamics of many-electron systems is of fundamental importance to all disciplines of condensed matter physics. A very effective access to electron dynamics is offered by inelastic X-ray scattering (IXS) spectroscopy. The double differential scattering cross section for IXS is directly related to the time-dependent two-particle density correlation function, and, for large momentum and energy transfer (Compton limit) to the electron momentum distribution. Moreover, resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) enables the study of electron dynamics via electronic excitations in a very selective manner (e.g. selectively spin, crystal momentum, or symmetry), so that other methods are efficaciously complemented. The progress of IXS spectroscopy is intimately related to the growing range of applications of synchrotron radiation. The aim of the book is to provide the growing community of researchers with accounts of experimental methods, instrumentation, and data analysis of IXS, with representative examples of successful applications, and with the theoretical framework for interpretations of the measurements.

Book Synopsis X-ray and Neutron Scattering Studies of the Rb2MnF4 and Cu1x̳Mgx̳GeO3 in an External Magnetic Field by : Rebecca Jean Christianson

This book was released on 2001 with total page 115 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis presents results of two scattering studies of low dimensional magnetic materials. The first is a neutron scattering study of Rb2MnF4, a nearly ideal two-dimensional square lattice Heisenberg antiferromagnet with S = 5/2. When this material is placed in a magnetic field on an extrapolation of the spin-flop phase boundary into the paramagnetic phase, Heisenberg critical behavior can be accessed to a much longer correlation length than had previously been achieved for a high-spin system. Comparison of our results with current theories indicate that the probed temperature region lies in a crossover region from classical to renormalized classical behavior. In addition, we show measurements of both the quasielastic and magnon dynamic behavior. The second part of this thesis presents extensive synchrotron x-ray scattering measurements of the high-field incommensurate phase in doped CuGeO3. Random-field behavior, including Lorentzian-squared lineshapes, the changing of a first order transition to second-order, and critical destruction of long-range order is observed in this continuous order parameter system.

Book Synopsis X-ray Scattering and Absorption by Magnetic Materials by : Stephen W. Lovesey
Download or read book X-ray Scattering and Absorption by Magnetic Materials written by Stephen W. Lovesey and published by Oxford University Press on Demand. This book was released on 1996 with total page 377 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first book devoted to the use of X-ray beam techniques to study magnetic properties of materials. It covers both experimental and theoretical issues. The three main topics are dichroism, elastic scattering (both non-resonant and resonant diffraction) and spectroscopy. In thepast decade there has been an expansion of activity in the field, driven by the availability of intense, tuneable and highly polarized X-ray beams from synchrtron facilities. The pace of events is likely to continue with the start of new (3rd generation) facilities, including the EuropeanSynchrotron Radiation Facility, Grenoble, and the Advanced Light Source, Argonne National Laboratory. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: X-ray scattering is a well-established technique in materials science. The aim of this text is to explain basic principles and applications of x-ray scattering in a simple way using many practical examples followed by more elaborate case studies. It contains a separate chapter on the different types of order/disorder in soft matter that play such an important role in modern self-assembling systems. Finally the last chapter treats soft matter surfaces and thin film that are increasingly used in coatings and in many technological applications, such as liquid crystal displays and nanostructured block copolymer films

Book Synopsis Lectures in Scattering Theory by : A. G. Sitenko
Download or read book Lectures in Scattering Theory written by A. G. Sitenko and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lectures in Scattering Theory discusses problems in quantum mechanics and the principles of the non-relativistic theory of potential scattering. This book describes in detail the properties of the scattering matrix and its connection with physically observable quantities. This text presents a stationary formulation of the scattering problem and the wave functions of a particle found in an external field. This book also examines the analytic properties of the scattering matrix, dispersion relations, complex angular moments, as well as the separable representation of the scattering amplitude. The text also explains the method of factorizing the potential and the two-particle scattering amplitude, based on the Hilbert-Schmidt theorem for symmetric integral equations. In investigating the problem of scattering in a three-particle system, this book notes that the inapplicability of the Lippman-Schwinger equations can be fixed by appropriately re-arranging the equations. Faddeev equations are the new equations formed after such re-arrangements. This book also cites, as an example, the scattering of a spin-1/2 particle by a spinless particle (such as the scattering of a nucleon by a spinless nucleus). This text is suitable for students and professors dealing with quantum mechanics, theoretical nuclear physics, or other fields of advanced physics.
