Book excerpt: La mise en oeuvre de procédés céramiques favorisant l’organisation de la microstructure à l’échelle des grains et des interfaces est favorable à l’amélioration de leurs propriétés mécaniques. Dans cette étude, des matériaux céramiques de mullite à microstructure organisée sont obtenus par frittage d’un assemblage de couches de phyllosilicates (kaolinite et muscovite). Les orientations préférentielles des particules dans le compact sont obtenues lors de la mise en forme par centrifugation et par coulage en bande. Durant le frittage à 1410°C, un processus de croissance préférentielle par épitaxie sur la forme haute température des phyllosilicates induit la formation d’une microstructure organisée de mullite. Une faible quantité de muscovite est nécessaire (10%massique), et le degré d’organisation de la microstructure dépend fortement des paramètres de mise en forme et du traitement thermique. Nos résultats montrent une relation entre le degré d’organisation microstructural (orientation et porosité) et les propriétés mécaniques (module d’Young et contrainte à la rupture). Quel que soit le procédé employé, les analyses QTA et MEB révèlent deux composantes de texture : une planaire suivant l’axe c de la mullite et une de type fibre suivant les axes a et b de la mullite qui sont alignés parallèlement aux plans de coulage ou de centrifugation. Le degré d’orientation a aussi une influence sur l’anisotropie des propriétés d’élasticité et la technique de coulage en bande apparaît ainsi plus favorable à l’orientation des cristaux. Le travail de thèse a été financé par la communauté européenne (Fonds Social Européen et FEDER) et la Région Limousin.

Book excerpt: Nous avons étudié le frittage de l’ilménite titanate de magnésium en présence de fluorure de lithium, et plus précisément la sensibilité à l’humidité de céramique à base de ces matériaux. L’évolution structurales et microstructurales durant le frittage a été étudié de façon approfondie et propose une explication pour la formation des phases cristallines observées durant le frittage. Les propriétés électriques et diélectriques ont été effectuées en fonction de l’humidité. Le composé MgTiO3 fritté en présence de 9,2% molaire de LiF (2% en masse) a montré une sensibilite importante dans la gamme entre 20 et 90% d’humidité. Dans le but d’une application spécifique des caractérisations à très bas taux d’humidité (supérieure à 0,03% d’humidité relative) ont été menées. Une bonne sensibilité est observée même pour de si faibles teneurs en humidité. Une explication de l’origine de la sensibilité à l’hygrométrie est proposée, notamment par une investigation sur le rôle d’une phase cristalline nouvelle : Li2MgTiO4. Une étude par frittage flash (SPS) sur ces composés a été faite et montre une amélioration de la réponse électrique et diélectrique du capteur en évitant l’apparition d’hystérésis dans les cycles adsorption et désorption. Elle montre également la sensibilité de ces matériaux vis-à-vis de l‘humidité en absence presque totale de la porosité ouverte (moins que 2%). Des prototypes réalisés en couche épaisse par spin coating de ce composé (MgTiO3+9,2 % LiF) sur un substrat d’Alumine montrent la possibilité de miniaturiser l’élément sensible tout en améliorant le temps de réponse qui atteint 35 secondes pour signaler une variation d’humidité relative entre 5 et 90%.
