Ils ont pour objectif le développement de varistances à haute tenue énergétique à base d'oxyde de zinc dopé répondant à la fois à la norme en vigueur et aux spécifications dimensionnelles de Tridelta. La mise au point de varistances à haute tenue énergétique passe par l'augmentation du volume de la céramique. La mise en forme des poudres a été étudiée dans le but d'obtenir une céramique exempte de tout défaut de structure. Afin d'optimiser l'élimination des adjuvants de mise en forme, indésirable à l'issue du frittage, un profil de cycle de déliantage permettant un gain de temps et d'efficacité a été mis au point. Un travail sur l'émail isolant a été mené dans le but de permettre à la varistance de pouvoir travailler sans couche protectrice additionnelle sans toutefois altérer les propriétés non-linéaires de la varistance. Afin d'obtenir des propriétés optimales de non-linéarité, une étude minutieuse a été effectuée sur le frittage. Le but est de contrôler la microstructure et ainsi les propriétés électriques de la varistance (non-linéarité, tenue énergétique, stabilité sous contrainte électrique). Des essais d'homologation ont été menés par un laboratoire certifié selon un protocole défini par la norme (choc de grande amplitude 100kA, série de chocs de longue durée 1200A-2ms). Enfin un travail a été mené dans le but d'optimiser la stabilité des varistances placées sous contrainte électrique. Il a abouti à la mise en place d'une nouvelle formulation permettant à la fois une importante capacité de dissipation de l'énergie induite et un coefficient de non-linéarité élevé.

Ces revêtements ont été déposés par pulvérisation cathodique r.f. dans un plasma Ar-O2. La phase plasma été caractérisée par spectroscopie d'émission optique. Les couches de ZnO ont été soumises à des traitements thermiques qui ont modifié leur composition, leurs propriétés structurales et optiques et leurs contraintes internes. L'adhésion du revêtement sur le PC dépend des conditions de dépôt. Elle a été améliorée en appliquant au polymère des traitements par plasma froids qui ont augmenté son énergie de surface, en réalisant une fonctionnalisation qui a été mise en évidence par XPS. L'étude de la photodégradation du PC montre que l'effet photoprotecteur du revêtement de ZnO dépend de son épaisseur et de ces conditions d'élaboration. Chapters written by experts in the field shed light on theoretical as well as experimental aspects of research carried out since the discovery of flexoelectricity. Besides a common macroscopic (continuum) description the microscopic theory of flexoelectricity is also addressed. Electro-optic effects due to or modified by flexoelectricity as well as various (direct and indirect) measurement methods are discussed. Special emphasis is given to the role of flexoelectricity in pattern-forming instabilities. While the main focus of the book lies in flexoelectricity in nematic liquid crystals, peculiarities of other mesophases (bent-core systems, cholesterics, and smectics) are also reviewed. Flexoelectricity has relevance to biological (living) systems and can also offer possibilities for technical applications. The basics of these two interdisciplinary fields are also summarized.
