Book Synopsis A History of Colombian Economic Thought by : Andrés Álvarez
Download or read book A History of Colombian Economic Thought written by Andrés Álvarez and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-09-08 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ever since the quest for independence between 1810 and 1819, economic thought in Colombia has been shaped by policy debates and characterized by a pragmatic and eclectic approach. Economic thought in Colombia can only be revealed through the exploration of economists’ practices and the role of economic arguments within broader public debate. This history of Colombian economic thought provides a detailed account of major issues that have marked the constant feedback between economic ideas and economic practice in Colombia during the 19th and 20th centuries. This volume is thus a history of the interaction between ideas and policy. Those involved in these debates – politicians, public officials, journalists, and, latterly, professional economists – established direct contact with what can be identified as the centers of production of economic theory (both in Europe and the US) and entered regional and local networks in economics, but were not just importers of ideas or theories. The way in which they read, discussed, transformed and applied economic theories in Colombia makes for a rich environment for the production and implementation of economic policies that drew, diverged and transformed the way economics was understood and used as a source of knowledge for practical concerns. This is why the history of Colombian economic thought does not fit into traditional typologies of economic schools and why it must be understood as part of a political debate and within a political, social and cultural context that demanded specific solutions to urgent social demands. Through the study of what was taught, when and how, at the beginnings of the republican era, and why and how professional economists came to lead public debate and economic policy making in the 20th century, this book explores the foundations of this permanent interaction between theory and practice. This book will be of significant interest to readers of history of economic thought, economic history and the history of Colombian and Latin American economic, political and social life more broadly.

Book Synopsis Political Economy of the Spanish Miracle by : Diego Ayala
Download or read book Political Economy of the Spanish Miracle written by Diego Ayala and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-12-05 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the 1950s and 1960s, Spain underwent one of the most rapid processes of economic development the world had ever seen. Most existing analyses of this process explain the “Spanish Miracle” as a product of the unleashing of market forces and of changes in economic policy made by the Franco regime in the 1950s. Political Economy of the Spanish Miracle provides an alternative explanation of Spanish economic development, analyzing the Miracle from an interdisciplinary political economy perspective that treats capitalist growth as a complex and dynamic interaction between capitalists, workers and the state. The Spanish Miracle is linked to changes in Spanish society produced by the Spanish Civil War, to the class structure of the regime brought to power by that Civil War and to the interaction between domestic social struggles under the Franco regime and Spain’s insertion into the international political economy of the Cold War capitalist world. Ambitious in scope, Political Economy of the Spanish Miracle both revises conventional understandings of Spanish economic growth and situates Spain within comparative discussions of development in the twentieth century. This book will be of great interest to readers in political economy, economic sociology, historical sociology and Spanish and European history more broadly.

Book Synopsis The Political Economy of Latin American Independence by : Alexandre Mendes Cunha
Download or read book The Political Economy of Latin American Independence written by Alexandre Mendes Cunha and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2016-09-19 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although historians usually trace its origins to the Haitian Revolution of the late 18th Century, Latin American political, economic and cultural emancipation is still very much a work in progress. As new national identities were developed, fresh reflection and theorising was needed in order to understand how Latin America related to the wider world. Through a series of case studies on different topics and national experiences, this volume shows how political economy has occupied an important place in discussions about emancipation and independence that occurred in the region. The production of political economic knowledge in the periphery of capitalism can take on many forms: importing ideas from abroad; translating and adapting them to local realities; or else producing concepts and theories specifically designed to make sense of the uniqueness of particular historical experiences. The Political Economy of Latin American Independence illustrates each of these strategies, exploring issues such as trade policy, money and banking, socio-economic philosophy, nationalism, and economic development. The expert authors stress how the originality of Latin American economic thought often resides in the creative appropriation of ideas originally devised in different contexts and thus usually ill-suited to local realities. Taken together, the chapters illustrate a fertile methodological approach for studying the history of political economy in Latin America. This book is of great interest to economic historians specialising in Latin America, as well as those who study history of economic thought, political economy and Latin American history.
Book Synopsis Advances on International Economics by : Carmen Díaz-Roldán
Download or read book Advances on International Economics written by Carmen Díaz-Roldán and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2015-09-04 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In a globalized world characterized by huge international capital mobility, there has been renewed interest in international economics in both academic circles and economic policy forums and supranational institutions. The recent financial and economic crisis, in particular, has raised questions concerning the usefulness of several economic paradigms accepted by both academia and advising government institutions. Advances on International Economics offers a broad overview of recent developments in international economics, both theoretical and empirical, adapted from contributions to the XV Conference on International Economics, organized by the Spanish Association of International Economics and Finance (AEEFI), and the University of Salamanca, Spain. The main topics of the contributions to this volume cover modelling international economics, macroeconomic aspects of international trade and finance, international factor movements, and international business. The chapters offer new theories and practical insights through the use of empirical tools for international policy recommendations."--Provided by publisher.
