Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Peru stands out among Latin American countries as an example of successful economic reforms over the past decade. This comprehensive look at Peru's economy traces that country's journey from a debt crisis in the 1980s to having buffers in place that allowed it to emerge unscathed from the global financial crisis. The book examines the steps Peru undertook to achieve these results and extracts lessons to be learned. Chapters are written by IMF staff and Peruvian economists.

Book excerpt: Peru’s financial system has developed and become more resilient since the previous FSAP in 2011, but some challenges remain. Peru’s main vulnerabilities are external, especially related to growth in trading partners (due to reliance on commodity exports), and exchange rate depreciation (due to significant dollarization), which were confirmed by the Growth-at-Risk (GaR) analysis. Peru is also vulnerable to domestic headwinds, related to uncertainty and spillovers from the ongoing Lava Jato investigation. The banking sector remains highly concentrated, with the four largest banks accounting for 83 percent of total private banking sector assets. These top four banks are all classified as domestic-systemically important banks (D-SIBs) and hence are subject to elevated supervision. The mission’s stress-test analysis showed that the banking system is largely resilient to adverse shocks, largely because of banks’ initial strong capital buffers and profitability. In the adverse scenario, all large banks experience credit losses, but initial high capital and profitability help them remain above the minimum regulatory capital adequacy ratio (CAR) threshold of 10 percent, while, for a few small banks, the CARs fall below the regulatory threshold. The overall banking system’s profits decline substantially in the adverse scenario, with some banks facing losses, but the aggregate capital shortfall for these banks is modest. The interconnectedness/contagion analysis showed that the joint probability of distress across all banks has fallen since the post-global financial crisis peak level it reached in 2010. However, shocks that affect credit exposures, which are strongly correlated among large banks, have the potential to become systemic events, since the banking system is concentrated.

Book Synopsis The Report: Peru 2014 by : Oxford Business Group
Download or read book The Report: Peru 2014 written by Oxford Business Group and published by Oxford Business Group. This book was released on 2013-12-19 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past decade Peru has seen a period of transformative growth, effectively positioning it as one of the leading economic performers in Latin America. Posting growth rates in excess of 6% from 2010-12, the economy expanded by a further 5.1% in the first half of 2013. A major metals and minerals exporter with a burgeoning agricultural sector, Peru’s rapid economic growth has been the result of elevated global demand for commodities and key exports, as well as prudent fiscal planning and the expansion of non-primary sectors. With an investor-friendly legal framework, Peru has become a prime destination for foreign direct investment and was recently ranked the second-best country for doing business in Latin America by the World Bank. Despite ongoing social conflict related to extractive industries and a sizeable infrastructure gap, Peru’s stable macroeconomic environment and its efforts to diversify and guard against price volatility should ensure continued growth for this Andean economy.

Book Synopsis Corporate Governing in Latin America by : Jonathan Callund
Download or read book Corporate Governing in Latin America written by Jonathan Callund and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-01-01 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Grounded in institutional theories, this volume offers a framework for understanding the evolution of corporate governance in the six leading Latin American countries, namely Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Mexico, and Peru. Applying inductive qualitative methods, it postulates the notion of governing as a dynamic, emergent and contextual process and traces its evolution and adaption to the different configurations of institutional logics in each country and the region as a whole over several decades. Adopting corporate governance scandals as the lens through which to observe institutional change in each country, this book reveals the sources of societal transformations, identifying key lessons as well as meaningful setbacks along the way. This edited collection helps appreciate the role and interactions of corporate elites, stakeholders and watchdogs, including the visible hands of government and multinational corporations, presenting comparisons across the countries, the region and the broader evolution of governing practices around the globe. The result is a book combining scholarly rigor and practical relevance, looking to serve as an emerging markets benchmark guide for practitioners, researchers and thinktanks alike.
