Book excerpt: Striking, inexplicable stories circulate among the people of Nuevo León in northern Mexico. Stories of conversos (converted Jews) who fled the Inquisition in Spain and became fabulously wealthy in Mexico. Stories of women and children buried in walls and under houses. Stories of an entire, secret city hidden under modern-day Monterrey. All these stories have no place or corroboration in the official histories of Nuevo León. In this pioneering ethnography, Marie Theresa Hernández explores how the folktales of Nuevo León encode aspects of Nuevolenese identity that have been lost, repressed, or fetishized in "legitimate" histories of the region. She focuses particularly on stories regarding three groups: the Sephardic Jews said to be the "original" settlers of the region, the "disappeared" indigenous population, and the supposed "barbaric" society that persists in modern Nuevo León. Hernández's explorations into these stories uncover the region's complicated history, as well as the problematic and often fascinating relationship between history and folklore, between officially accepted "facts" and "fictions" that many Nuevoleneses believe as truth.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Contemporary theories of modernity recognize the plurality or "multiplicity" of modernities. Often the differences are seen as institutional or cultural differences. Although this sort of research is important it cannot be ignored that it does not provide a clear understanding of the "human consequences". The tradition that today is known under the name of Critical Theory, on the contrary, has been interested always first of all in the human consequences. This book wants to follow this ambition. The question it tries to search answers for is: what are the experiences that human beings are making in and within global modernity? Another question is important: what are the affinities and what are the differences. Also Critical Theory was mainly interested in the Western experiences with and within global modernity. The book will challenge this limited view by looking how modernities is experienced in other parts of the world.

The Proceedings are published as two volumes: a printed edition of the plenary presentations, and an e-Book with the complete material presented at the Congress. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of essays brings together papers written for, and presented at, the VI Latin American Congress of Jungian Psychology, held in Florianopolis, Brazil, in September 2012. The reader will find contributions by leading Jungian analysts in the continent from Brazil, Uruguay, and Chile, to Venezuela and Mexico. The essays here share discussions on issues pertinent to the social and cultural climate of different parts of Latin America, as well as the constantly challenging questions of psychotherapy. They present detailed psychological reflections on the specific theme chosen for the meeting at that time: friendship and its paradoxes. Fraternity, conflicts, tolerance and intolerance, mutuality, conjugal relationships, empathy, sympathy, self-esteem and envy, issues of psychotherapy, mythological amplifications, and perspectives on the possibilities of dialogue between people and nations are among the wide range of topics explored here. As such, this book will appeal to practitioners of psychotherapy, psychologists, and anthropologists, as well as the reader interested in how Jungian psychology is currently meeting the difficult challenges of a changing world.

Book excerpt: Although all living beings modify their environment, human beings have acquired the ability to do so on a superlative space-time scale. As a result of industrialization and the use of new technologies, the anthropogenic impact has been increasing in the last centuries, causing reductions in the sizes or the extinction of numerous wild populations. In this sense, from the field of conservation genetics, various efforts have been made in recent decades to provide new knowledge that contributes to the conservation of populations, species, and habitats. In this book, we summarize the concrete contributions of researchers to the conservation of the Neotropical mammals using Molecular Ecology techniques. The book is divided into three major sections. The first section provides an up-to-date review of the conservation status of Neotropical mammals, the applications of the molecular markers in its conservation, and the use of non-invasive and forensic genetic techniques. The second and third sections present, respectively, a series of case studies in various species or taxonomic groups of Neotropical mammals.
