Book Synopsis Your Brain on Latino Comics by : Frederick Luis Aldama
Download or read book Your Brain on Latino Comics written by Frederick Luis Aldama and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 2012-10-19 with total page 341 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Though the field of comic book studies has burgeoned in recent years, Latino characters and creators have received little attention. Putting the spotlight on this vibrant segment, Your Brain on Latino Comics illuminates the world of superheroes Firebird, Vibe, and the new Blue Beetle while also examining the effects on readers who are challenged to envision such worlds. Exploring mainstream companies such as Marvel and DC as well as rising stars from other segments of the industry, Frederick Aldama provides a new reading of race, ethnicity, and the relatively new storytelling medium of comics themselves. Overview chapters cover the evolution of Latino influences in comics, innovations, and representations of women, demonstrating Latino transcendence of many mainstream techniques. The author then probes the rich and complex ways in which such artists affect the cognitive and emotional responses of readers as they imagine past, present, and future worlds. Twenty-one interviews with Latino comic book and comic strip authors and artists, including Laura Molina, Frank Espinosa, and Rafael Navarro, complete the study, yielding captivating commentary on the current state of the trade, cultural perceptions, and the intentions of creative individuals who shape their readers in powerful ways.
Book Synopsis Keywords for Comics Studies by : Ramzi Fawaz
Download or read book Keywords for Comics Studies written by Ramzi Fawaz and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 2021-06-08 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Introduces key terms, research traditions, debates, and histories, and offers a sense of the new frontiers emerging in the field of comics studies Across more than fifty original essays, Keywords for Comics Studies provides a rich, interdisciplinary vocabulary for comics and sequential art. The essays also identify new avenues of research into one of the most popular and diverse visual media of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. Keywords for Comics Studies presents an array of inventive analyses of terms central to the study of comics and sequential art that are traditionally siloed in distinct lexicons: these include creative and aesthetic terms like Ink, Creator, Border, and Panel; conceptual terms such as Trans*, Disability, Universe, and Fantasy; genre terms like Zine, Pornography, Superhero, and Manga; and canonical terms like X-Men, Archie, Watchmen, and Love and Rockets. This volume ties each specific comic studies keyword to the larger context of the term within the humanities. Essays demonstrate how scholars, cultural critics, and comics artists from a range of fields take up sequential art as both an object of analysis and a medium for developing new theories about embodiment, identity, literacy, audience reception, genre, cultural politics, and more. Keywords for Comics Studies revivifies the fantasy and magic of reading comics in its kaleidoscopic view of the field’s most compelling and imaginative ideas.

Book excerpt: A witty and irreverent look at the collision of two dangerous subjects -- live television and sex. "Sue, I have a question about vaginal odour." The young woman on the phone sounds earnest. On the television screen, the sixty-something host leans forward with the concern of an attentive great aunt, listening intently. "Yes?" It's late Sunday evening, and all across Canada, 300,000 viewers are watching The Sunday Night Sex Show, eavesdropping on this most intimate of conversations. "Well, I don't think mine smells very good, and a friend told me I should take a bath in vinegar" Without a second's hesitation, Sue Johanson exclaims: "What are you trying to do? Pickle it?!" And then she laughs, a warm, inclusive, non-judgmental laugh that tells the young woman on the phone that she's poking fun at the suggestion, not the caller. Viewers chuckle at the gag, and then settle back to listen to the country's best-loved sexual educator give a well-informed, honest answer to an honest question. For six seasons, Sue Johanson has been ruining people's Mondays by making them stay up late Sunday night. Sex sells, but it's really not the topic that keeps viewers tuning in. It's Sue. They love her. In this book, RJ Gulliver, Sue's long-time director and consultant, tells the stories behind the shows. Transcripts of classic phone calls (both funny and poignant), stories of the erotic toys that didn't make it on the air, what goes on behind the cameras, and Sue's own story fill this book that will make you laugh out loud, and give you a new appreciation of Canada's favourite sex-ed teacher. It also includes a chapter written by Sue about the best herbal remedies to common sexual problems. In Canada, if Saturday night belongs to hockey, Sunday night belongs to Sue.

For the right price, Silver Oak (a wizard), Night Stalker (a werewolf), Yolanda (a sorceress), Shadowmist (a female ninja), and Lightshow (a high-tech-armored roadie) are ready to take your case. Edward Vanderland III is exactly the kind of client TSI is looking for as their first assignment: a millionaire threatened by evil spirits, he's offering $50,000 for protection. Sounds like a simple enough job for a band of fledgling heroes. Maybe too simple. As it turns out, Vanderland's enemies--perhaps even Vanderland himself--are a lot more dangerous than the Troubleshooters were expecting. Why, if matters get any worse, they might just have to adjust their billing...
Book Synopsis Acoustic Properties by : Tom McEnaney
Download or read book Acoustic Properties written by Tom McEnaney and published by Northwestern University Press. This book was released on 2017-06-15 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Acoustic Properties: Radio, Narrative, and the New Neighborhood of the Americas discovers the prehistory of wireless culture. It examines both the coevolution of radio and the novel in Argentina, Cuba, and the United States from the early 1930s to the late 1960s, and the various populist political climates in which the emerging medium of radio became the chosen means to produce the voice of the people. Based on original archival research in Buenos Aires, Havana, Paris, and the United States, the book develops a literary media theory that understands sound as a transmedial phenomenon and radio as a transnational medium. Analyzing the construction of new social and political relations in the wake of the United States’ 1930s Good Neighbor Policy, Acoustic Properties challenges standard narratives of hemispheric influence through new readings of Richard Wright’s cinematic work in Argentina, Severo Sarduy’s radio plays in France, and novels by John Dos Passos, Manuel Puig, Raymond Chandler, and Carson McCullers. Alongside these writers, the book also explores Che Guevara and Fidel Castro’s Radio Rebelde, FDR’s fireside chats, Félix Caignet’s invention of the radionovela in Cuba, Evita Perón’s populist melodramas in Argentina, Orson Welles’s experimental New Deal radio, Cuban and U.S. “radio wars,” and the 1960s African American activist Robert F. Williams’s proto–black power Radio Free Dixie. From the doldrums of the Great Depression to the tumult of the Cuban Revolution, Acoustic Properties illuminates how novelists in the radio age converted writing into a practice of listening, transforming realism as they struggled to channel and shape popular power.

Download or read book Dark Prisms written by Robert Lima and published by University Press of Kentucky. This book was released on 2021-10-21 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The mythological, folkloric, and religious beliefs of Western culture have resulted in a long and ongoing history of esoteric themes in theatre from the Middle Ages to the present in Spain and the America. Now Robert Lima, a noted comparatist, brings to bear on this material his wide knowledge of the world of the occult. Lima defines the terms "occult" and "occultism" broadly to embrace the many ways in which humans have sought to fathom a secret knowledge held to be accessible only through such supernatural agencies as alchemy, angelology, asceticism, astrology, demonolatry, divination, ecstasy, magic, necromancy, possession, Santeria, séances, voudoun, and witchcraft. The dramatic works covered range from medieval materializations of Hell to the Golden Age plays of Lope de vega, Tirso de Molina, and Calderón de la Barca, to modern stage works by Valle-Inclán, García Lorca, Casona, Miras, and a number of significant Afro-Brazilian and Caribbean dramatists. The concluding comprehensive bibliography of the drama of the occult is invaluable.
