Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Did Jesus claim to be the "bridegroom"? If so, what did he mean by this claim? When Jesus says that the wedding guests should not fast "while the bridegroom is with them" (Mark 2:19), he is claiming to be a bridegroom by intentionally alluding to a rich tradition from the Hebrew Bible. By eating and drinking with "tax collectors and other sinners," Jesus was inviting people to join him in celebrating the eschatological banquet. While there is no single text in the Hebrew Bible or the literature of the Second Temple Period which states the "messiah is like a bridegroom," the elements for such a claim are present in several texts in Isaiah, Jeremiah, and Hosea. By claiming that his ministry was an ongoing wedding celebration he signaled the end of the Exile and the restoration of Israel to her position as the Lord's beloved wife. This book argues that Jesus combined the tradition of an eschatological banquet with a marriage metaphor in order to describe the end of the Exile as a wedding banquet.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Oystein Lund gives a new approach to texts in Isaiah 40-55 that deal with ways and desert transformation. Earlier exegesis has mainly read these texts in a literal way. In recent years, exegetes have pointed out that the so-called 'exodus texts' should rather be interpreted metaphorically. The author supports this, and accordingly seeks to continue this discourse by systematizing, intensifying, and deepening the argumentation for a metaphorical reading. He argues that most of the way-texts in Isaiah 40-55 are interrelated, and gradually contribute to explore questions regarding the way-situation of the people. The way-theme appears in the prologue, and in 40:27 a problem approach is established when the people is addressed: How can you say, O Jacob, and speak, O Israel, 'My way is hidden from the LORD, and my right passes by my God'? Several subsequent way-texts are related to this text, and together these draw a coherent picture in which the problematic way-situation of the people in the past and present is transformed. JHWH establishes new ways in which he leads his people through their difficult landscape. Oystein Lund argues that such a coherent reading of the way-texts gives good meaning, which is consistent with the over all message of Isaiah 40-55.

How many people do you know who say they believe in God but you'd never know it from looking at their lives? Despite good intentions, their faith isn't life-changing or world-shaking; they may go to church on Sundays but God doesn't seem to make much difference the other six days. Maybe this describes you, and you're starting to realize that the "before" of your life looks a lot like the "after." Is that really the best faith in Jesus has to offer? International evangelist and speaker Luis Palau has encountered people from all walks of life who believe in God but have never experienced real, life-defining transformation. In Changed by Faith, he offers a gritty, up-close look at the broken world around us, the true redemptive power of the gospel-and what it means for your life today. Through dramatic personal stories and solid scriptural perspective, Luis looks at the practical changes that come when you begin to follow the teachings of Jesus Christ-and shows how God can take the ashes of your life and transform them into something beautiful.

Inquiry into the biblical dimensions of the theology of St. Thomas Aquinas is an area of theological scholarship that has seen tremendous development in the past century. The argument of this study is that this development has been limited by an approach that has often isolated Thomas' exegetical principles and even techniques from the in-depth exploration of Thomas' actual exegetical practice. Consequently, much of the unique value of Thomas' biblical commentaries has yet to be appreciated. Part I focuses on Thomas as an exegete and interpreter of Sacred Scripture. Chapter I is a consideration of Thomas' understanding of both the Bible and the art of interpretation in an attempt to discover how Thomas' presuppositions affect his exegesis. In the second chapter criticisms of Thomas as exegete are examined. Part II consists of an application of this approach to Thomas' Ephesians Lectura. Chapter IV-VI are an analysis of this commentary from the standpoint of the theme Thomas detects in the Epistle - the origination of ecclesial unity. This analysis offers evidence that an approach to Thomas' biblical commentaries which respects their status as such has much to demostrate regarding contemporary access to Thomas' thought and the unity of exegesis and theology. The final chapter contains a summary and an exploration of the implications of the Lectura for contemporary scholarship.

Book excerpt: For over one hundred years International Critical Commentaries have had a special place among works on the Bible. They bring together all the relevant aids to exegesis - linguistic, textual, archaeological, historical, literary, and theological - to help the reader understand the meaning of the books of the Old and New Testaments. The new commentaries continue this tradition. All new evidence now available is incorporated and new methods of study are applied. The authors are of the highest international standing. No attempt has been made to secure a uniform theological or critical approach to the biblical text: contributors have been invited for their scholarly distinction, not for their adherence to any one school of thought.

This is the first monograph devoted to the three accounts of the transfiguration of Jesus from a narrative-critical, audience-oriented perspective. It proposes a new literary genere designation for all three versions, that of a pivotal mandatory epiphany, based upon the precedents in Num 22:31-35, Josh 5:13-15, and 2 Macc 3:22-34. The background and meaning of each of the major motifs of the three accounts of the transfiguration is explained: Jesus is externaily and temporarily trasformed into a heavenly figure to anticipate his future attainment of heavenly glory and to enable him to speak with the heavenly figures of Moses and Elijah. Rather than symbols of the Law and the Prophets, Moses and Elijah represent prophetic figures who, in contrast to Jesus, attained heavenly glory without being puf to death by their people. The three tents Peter wants to build have their background primarily in the Tent of Meeting as a piace of divine communication. The cloud overshad-ows oniy Moses and Elijah; it has both a vehicular function of implicitly transporting Moses and Elijah back to heaven and an oracular function of providing the divine mandate that serves as the climax of the mandatory epiphany. The climatic divine mandate to listen to Jesus as God's Son refers primarily to the various predictions of his suffering, death and resurrection throughout the narrative. The pivotal nature of this divine mandate is confimed by a demonstration of the narrative function of the transfiguration epiphany in relation to its preceding and succeding context in each Gospel.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This research work investigates the problem whether the texts of the love commandment (cf. Mk 12,28-34), which are quotations of Deut 6,4-5 and Lev 19,18, have their original OT meaning in the gospel of Mark or whether they acquire, besides this, a specific Markan enrichment. The study not only affirms such a specificity but also demonstrates its richness and depth. It establishes that the distinctiveness of the Markan conception of the love commandment is closely linked to the person of Jesus and is expressed in a multiplicity of data, both formal and thematic, which can be discovered in an integral reading of the gospel. The methodology employed is modem redaction-criticism which differs from classical Redaction-criticism in that it is synchronic and takes the text as it stands as a coherent and wholistic document to be understood in terms of itself and thus studies it in an integral reading. The investigation has two parts, involving four chapters and a general conclusion. Part I, comprising Ch I and Ch II, dwells on the OT meaning and context of the texts of the love commandment and provides a lucid account of them which serves as the basis for its study in the gospel. Part II researches the commandment in Mk in two chapters. Of these Ch III represents the gospel's theoretical interpretation of the commandment and Ch IV Jesus' fulfillment of it in the Passion, his instruction by example. Together, they complete Mark's total interpretation of the love comandment. Following this, the general conclusion sees the Markan specificities in a unifying theological vision defined by the gospel's Christology and closes by drawing its consequences. George Keerankeri was born on 10 December 1944 at Kothanalloor in Kerala, India. He entered the Society of Jesus in 1962 and was ordained a priest in 1974. He holds an M.A. in Social-Cultural Anthropology and completed his Licentiate in Sacred Scripture (LSS) at the Pontifical Biblical institute, Rome in 1979. Ever since he is a lecturer of the New Testament at Vidyajyoti College of Theology, the Jesuit Faculty of Theology in Delhi, India.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. The author, in view of the coverage of Medicine in his annual bibliography (Elenchus of Biblica 1980-95), was invited to this survey at a Madrid-AIcala summer institute. It is here updated from a 612 item bibliography. Its most notable discovery is that there is no word for brain in the Bible, and the very frequent term generally rendered heart means rather internal organs of cognition and control, largely the functions of the brain, though located vaguely in the stomach-area. The author was then led by the absence of words like brain and (real) heart, also lung, comb, spoon, to a further critical survey of six entirely different approaches to the audacious question, Was biblical Hebrew a language? - all concluding that it was never a used language, but was a scriba) combination of elements from languages really used in the environs. In this it wouid have resembied the Esperanto of many centuries later, except in being probably intended to make less rather than more accessible the contente for which it would have been used. More recently it has been proposed that Ezra's promulgating of his Torah was a maneuvre of Persian overlordship. At any rate the intense scribal activity of this period remains the likeliest background for a Bible-language innovation. But silence about Ezra in Sirach 49,13 leaves open also the period after 130 b.c., at least for insertion of the later books.

Most of these thirty collected studies were written in Rome. Two are translations from the Dutch; three have not been published previously. Some few studies address philological problems, but most try to explain the thought of the biblical text. There are full-fledged articles and also brief notes. Bringing them together in one volume will prove useful to students of Paul, of Pauline Literature and of The Book of Revelation. These essays are the result of years of teaching experience and extensive research. This book consists of two parts: Pauline and Deutero-Pauline Letters, the larger one, and The Book of Revelation, the smaller. The first part considers Paul's view of the law, his eschatological convictions and his reasoning regarding the resurrection of Christ and of the Christians. The second part examines the ecclesiology and the climatic composition of The Book of Revelation. The movement from judgments to blessings is carefully investigated.

Doak observes that the book of Job uses metaphors drawn from the natural world, especially of plants and animals, as raw material for thinking about human suffering. Doak argues that Job should be viewed as an anthropological "ground zero" for the traumatic definition of the post-exilic human self in ancient Israel. Consider Leviathan explores the test at the intersection of anthropology, theology, and ecology, opening up new possiblitiis for charting the view of nature in the Hebrew Bible." --From Publisher.
