Book excerpt: Typewritten list of documents in the Archivo General de Indias in Sevilla on the early history of California, compiled by Fernando Juan in 1911 for Irving B. Richman of Muscatine, Iowa. The list contain the titles of documents, dated between 1593 and 1788, pertaining to the exploration of the California coast. Each numbered entry contains the titles of a file or "legajo", which typically includes the report of the navigator or cartographer to the viceroy; an outline of the route taken; and a map of the coastline. Juan records the dates of the mss., number of leaves, and paper size for most entries. With the list is a typed letter to Richman, dated July 12, 1911 in Sevilla, with ms. signature of "Fernando Juan", who acknowledges receipt of Richman's check for the cost of the list, and discusses his fees, presumably for other transcription projects.
