Book Synopsis After Conversion by : Mercedes García-Arenal
Download or read book After Conversion written by Mercedes García-Arenal and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2016-09-07 with total page 475 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the religious and ideological consequences of mass conversion in Iberia, where Jews and Muslims were forcibly converted or expelled at the end of the XVth century and beginning of the XVIth, and in this way it explores the fraught relationship between origins and faith. It treats also of the consequences of coercion on intellectual debates and the production of knowledge, taking into account how integrating new converts from Judaism and Islam stimulated Christian scholars to confront the converts’ sacred texts and created a distinctive peninsular hermeneutics. The book thus assesses the importance of the “Converso problem” in issues such as religious dissidence, dissimulation, and doubt and skepticism while establishing the process by which religious dissidence came to be categorized as heresy and was identified with converts from Judaism and Islam even when Lutheranism was often in the background.
Book Synopsis A Comparative History of Literatures in the Iberian Peninsula by : César Domínguez
Download or read book A Comparative History of Literatures in the Iberian Peninsula written by César Domínguez and published by John Benjamins Publishing Company. This book was released on 2016-10-20 with total page 765 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Volume 2 of A Comparative History of Literatures in the Iberian Peninsula brings to an end this collective work that aims at surveying the network of interliterary relations in the Iberian Peninsula. No attempt at such a comparative history of literatures in the Iberian Peninsula has been made until now. In this volume, the focus is placed on images (Section 1), genres (Section 2), forms of mediation (Section 3), and cultural studies and literary repertoires (Section 4). To these four sections an epilogue is added, in which specialists in literatures in the Iberian Peninsula, as well as in the (sub)disciplines of comparative history and comparative literary history, search for links between Volumes 1 and 2 from the point of view of general contributions to the field of Iberian comparative studies, and assess the entire project that now reaches completion with contributions from almost one hundred scholars.
Book Synopsis Spanish Golden Age Poetry in Motion by : Jean Andrews
Download or read book Spanish Golden Age Poetry in Motion written by Jean Andrews and published by Boydell & Brewer Ltd. This book was released on 2014 with total page 309 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fourteen essays of this volume engage in distinct ways with the matter of motion in early modern Spanish poetics. Los catorce ensayos de este volumen conectan de una manera perceptible con el tema del movimiento enla poesía española del siglo de oro The fourteen essays of this volume engage in distinct ways with the matter of motion in early modern Spanish poetics, without limiting the dialectic of stasis and movement to any single sphere or manifestation. Interrogation of the interdependence of tradition and innovation, poetry, power and politics, shifting signifiers, the intersection of topography and deviant temporalities, the movement between the secular and the sacred, tensions between centres and peripheries, issues of manuscript circulation and reception, poetic calls and echoes across continents and centuries, and between creative writing and reading subjects, all demonstrate that Helgerson's central notion of conspicuous movement is relevant beyond early sixteenth-century secular poetics, By opening it up we approximate a better understanding of poetry's flexible spatio-temporal co-ordinates in a period of extraordinary historical circumstances and conterminous radical cultural transformation. Book Synopsis Topographies of Fascism by : Nil Santiáñez-Tió
Download or read book Topographies of Fascism written by Nil Santiáñez-Tió and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2013-01-01 with total page 433 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Topographies of Fascism offers the first comprehensive exploration of how Spanish fascist writing essays, speeches, articles, propaganda materials, poems, novels, and memoirs represented and created space from the early 1920s until the late 1950s. Nil Santiáñez contends that fascism expressed its views on the state, the nation, and the society in spatial terms (for example, the state as a building, the nation as an organic unity, and society as the people's community), just as its adherents celebrated fascism in its architecture, public spectacles, and military rituals. While Topographies of Fascism centres on Spain, a nation that produced a large number of fascist texts focused on space, it also draws on works written by key German, Italian, and French fascist politicians and intellectuals. Ultimately, it provides an innovative model for analyzing the comparable yet often overlooked strategies of symbolic representation and production of space in fascist political and cultural discourse.

Book Synopsis The Poetess Counts to 100 and Bows Out by : Ana Enriqueta Terán
Download or read book The Poetess Counts to 100 and Bows Out written by Ana Enriqueta Terán and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2009-02-09 with total page 143 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ana Enriqueta Terán is arguably Venezuela's finest poet. Celebrated throughout the Spanish-speaking world, she is almost unknown among anglophones. Until now only a handful of her poems have been translated into English, giving at best a diluted impression of a uniquely intense imagination. This bilingual edition reveals the power and beauty of this poet's Spanish poems through English versions of corresponding force. It invites readers to enter Terán's world--a world at once strongly Venezuelan and universally human, imbued with great beauty, sardonic humor, pitiless compassion, lucid wisdom, and joyful affirmation. Selected from several volumes of Terán's work, these poems span half a century of composition and show an extraordinary range in both form and substance. Some are written in closed forms, some in free verse. Some are carefully evocative representations of the landscapes and cityscapes that have nourished the poet's intelligence and imagination. Others are dramatic character studies. All are infused with Terán's rare sensibility and realized through language that manages to be at once graceful, urgent, and explosive. This volume is a treasure for all lovers of poetry. Deal Struck with Happiness ? How much sweetness to make right the night and this clutch of anemones near thin smooth consoling stones, stones havens of southern weather. Of a woman who watches Cepheids quaver among lightbursting mangroves. Of a woman who offers cats-eyes and clematis only, Islands, for the sake of setting right her deal struck with happiness.
