Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hepatic hydatidosis is a worldwide disease with a high socio-economic cost in endemic areas. Until recently, only professionals working in these areas treated hydatidosis patients, but now, due to migration and increasing intercontinental travel, any medical doctor may have to attend to patients with hydatid disease. Therefore, proper training in the diagnosis and treatment of these patients is necessary, not just in endemic areas which already have extensive experience in managing the disease, but also in institutions in countries like the United States where hydatidosis is still rare. In this book, we update all the epidemiological, radiological, clinical and therapeutic topics in liver hydatidosis. The chapters are written by a multidisciplinary group of physicians involved in treatment of the disease: microbiologists, gastroenterologists, internists, radiologists and surgeons. We conduct a complete review of all the treatment options in hydatidosis, including antiparasitic drugs, PAIR and surgery.

Book excerpt: Shortly after Langenbuch performed the first cholecystectomy in 1877 in Berlin, the first bile duct injury associated to cholecystectomy occurred and was published. For decades frequency maintained low, until the presentation of laparoscopic cholecystectomy, when the number of cases complicated with bile duct injury doubled. Nowadays, it is estimated that this injury occurs in up to every three to six cholecystectomies. In 2019, despite the great efforts, educational programs, simulators and learning curves, injuries continue to happen. In some way, it represents a great emotional burden both for the surgeon and the patient. This text compiles a wide revision of this problem. In the United States, it represents a health issue due to the costs it carries. In Mexico, where the information published by the authors is gathered, there are no official statistics of the problem. The different chapters of the book deeply explore anatomical and physiological aspects of the bile duct, the etiology of the lesions and the mechanisms or tools to approach the patient, as the multidisciplinary outcomes of the injury. This book is addressed to all health professionals, especially surgeons, who are involved in these complex cases directly or not. We intend to approach, in a wide and profound manner, all the situations related to the management of these lesions.

Book excerpt: Laparoscopic surgery, also called minimal access surgery, has revolutionized the field of surgery over the past few years. It has gained worldwide popularity and acceptance by surgeons and patients alike. Minimal scarring, less pain, and shorter hospital stay are the main reasons behind the global appeal of this novel technique. There has been a tremendous improvement in the technique, as well as in the instruments. The technique has passed through the stages of simple laparoscopic surgery to advanced levels, where more complicated procedures are being successfully attempted. The recent introduction of robotic surgery is also gaining popularity, in additional to single port laparoscopic surgery (SILS), which can be scarless surgery. Most of the surgical procedures, which were considered contraindication for the laparoscopic approach, have eventually become the most common and acceptable indications today. This book is intended to provide an overview of the most common procedures performed laparoscopically, as well as some recent advancements in the field.

Book excerpt: Complicated urinary tract infections (cUTIs) are a major cause of hospital admissions and are associated with significant morbidity and health care costs. Knowledge of baseline risk of urinary tract infection can help clinicians make informed diagnostic and therapeutic decisions. Prevalence rates of UTI vary by age, gender, race, and other predisposing risk factors. In this regard, this book provides comprehensive information on etiology, epidemiology, immunology, pathology, pathogenic mechanisms, symptomatology, investigation and management of urinary tract infection. Chapters cover common problems in urinary tract infection and put emphasis on the importance of making a correct clinical decision and choosing the appropriate therapeutic approach. Topics are organized to address all of the major complicated conditions frequently seen in urinary tract infection. The authors have paid particular attention to urological problems like the outcome of patients with vesicoureteric reflux, the factors affecting renal scarring, obstructive uropathy, voiding dysfunction and catheter associated problems. This book will be indispensable for all professionals involved in the medical care of patients with urinary tract infection.
