Download or read book But Not for Love written by Edwin Shrake and published by TCU Press. This book was released on 2000 with total page 394 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Texas Traditions Series reprint takes us back to the Lone Star State during the Cold War at the beginning of the 1960s. The postwar generation is in a frenzy of high living and profligate spending. Big Texas oil is still subsidized by a federal depletion allowance and cattle still account for much of the state’s wealth. But these longtime mainstays of Texas finance are giving way to transistors and computers. A new millionaire class is growing up around business mergers and electronic technology. The characters in Shrake’s novel are caught in this brave new world in one way or another. Some are the princes of prosperity; others are victims of it. This is a world of lobbyists, merger lawyers, small-time politicos, sons of oil money, and the women who cheer them on or worry about their souls. In the opening section of the novel, we visit the Texas Gulf Coast and see the machinations of Sam Guthrie and Waddy Morris Jr. as they attempt to take over a rival technology company. Back in Dallas, idealistic attorney Ben Carpenter moves to thwart the Guthrie/Morris takeover. Then we move to Fort Worth and attend the drunken party given in honor of Ben Carpenter’s thirtieth birthday. The party moved to Mexico on Cadmus Wilkins’s bus where everyone has to confront his or her inner self. And some are found wanting. The several vignettes of the novel paint an accurate picture of Texas as it moves into the urban era and as its middle class began deserting the old verities and tasting what were once forbidden pleasures. Shrake is a first-rate stylist who knows how the upper half lives.
Book Synopsis God, Can You Love Me? by : Chrystal Hansen
Download or read book God, Can You Love Me? written by Chrystal Hansen and published by Destiny Image Publishers. This book was released on 2011-07-28 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Overcome by severe depression and an inability to cope with ministry pressures, author Chrystal Hansen was diagnosed with bi-polar disorder. Two years later, after numerous appointments with a psychiatrist and psychologist and taking medications, she experienced a miraculous and medically documented healing. God restored her broken and confused heart and uses the miracle to inspire you to believe and accept His hand to move in your place of need. To help people with similar problems, the author shares her personal story of physical, emotional, and spiritual experiences, as well as her emerging understanding about the roots of her struggles. After ChrystalÕs healing more than 12 years ago, God led her to start an organization dedicated to the message ministry of transformation, Emerging Life Ministry Solutions. The ministry equips those desiring a deeper revelation of Christ and helps people journey through some of lifeÕs hardest places of pain, hurt, and trauma. Community initiatives to Òat-risk youthÓ are also a part of the vision and outreach of Emerging Life Solutions. ItÕs not a self-help thingÑitÕs a God thing. Also discussed is how the Church can more effectively help those struggling with depression and other emotional and mental illnesses. A key lesson to be learned is the redemptive purpose that suffering can have in your life.

Book Synopsis The Answer to Bad Religion Is Not No Religion by : Martin Thielen
Download or read book The Answer to Bad Religion Is Not No Religion written by Martin Thielen and published by Westminster John Knox Press. This book was released on 2014-01-17 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If you think the only logical response to bad Christianity is to leave Christianity completely, this book is for you. In an effort to help those who’ve been hurt by or turned off by negative religion, Martin Thielen explains that there is an alternative to abandoning religion: good religion. Thielen uses personal stories to illustrate the dangers of religion that is judgmental, anti-intellectual, and legalistic. While addressing the growth of the new atheism movement and the “Nones” (people that have no religious affiliation), this book argues that leaving religion is not practical, not helpful, and not necessary. Thielen provides counterparts to the characteristics of bad religion, explaining that good religion is grace-filled, promotes love and forgiveness, and is inclusive and hope-filled. This study is perfect for individual, group, or congregational study.

Download or read book Stressilient written by Sam Akbar, PhD and published by St. Martin's Essentials. This book was released on 2023-08-01 with total page 119 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stress. It’s everywhere these days: a cry for help, the answer to why illnesses pop up (or won’t go away), an issue for students and workers, and a culprit when it comes to everything from car accidents to weight gain. Stress is one of those problems most of us are left to figure out and solve by ourselves (a warm bath with scented candle only goes so far). Akbar walks worried readers through how to calm themselves by: -understanding how your brain is wired and why its natural genius at problem-solving doesn’t help when it comes to stress -creating space between you and your thoughts -repeating worrisome words to sap them of meaning -defusing “thought bombs” -learning to avoid the CAGE (Control, Avoid, Get rid of, Eliminate) when it comes to feelings and training yourself to stop trying to shut down real pain -scanning and labelling feelings -the power of urge surfing -accessing your own wisdom There are tried-and-true techniques here, but many more fresh ways to consider the problem of stress. And every one of them is real-world: this book acknowledges that we all have responsibilities, that our time likely isn’t our own, and that the goal is to reduce stress rather than eliminate it altogether. Dr. Akbar’s wise and experienced voice in this short and calming book will make readers relax into her content.

Book Synopsis Into the Cosmos by : James T. Andrews
Download or read book Into the Cosmos written by James T. Andrews and published by University of Pittsburgh Pre. This book was released on 2011-09-25 with total page 343 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The launch of the Sputnik satellite in October 1957 changed the course of human history. In the span of a few years, Soviets sent the first animal into space, the first man, and the first woman. These events were a direct challenge to the United States and the capitalist model that claimed ownership of scientific aspiration and achievement. The success of the space program captured the hopes and dreams of nearly every Soviet citizen and became a critical cultural vehicle in the country's emergence from Stalinism and the devastation of World War II. It also proved to be an invaluable tool in a worldwide propaganda campaign for socialism, a political system that could now seemingly accomplish anything it set its mind to. Into the Cosmos shows us the fascinating interplay of Soviet politics, science, and culture during the Khrushchev era, and how the space program became a binding force between these elements. The chapters examine the ill-fitted use of cosmonauts as propaganda props, the manipulation of gender politics after Valentina Tereshkova's flight, and the use of public interest in cosmology as a tool for promoting atheism. Other chapters explore the dichotomy of promoting the space program while maintaining extreme secrecy over its operations, space animals as media darlings, the history of Russian space culture, and the popularity of space-themed memorabilia that celebrated Soviet achievement and planted the seeds of consumerism.
