Als eine Art AbschluB der Ausbildung irn Methodenschwerpunkt biete ich von Zeit zu Zeit ein Seminar an, in dem die Studierenden zu einer von mir oder ihnen vorgeschlagenen Fragestellung eine eigene kleine Studie durchfuhren sollen. Sie erhalten Zugang zu den besten allgemein verfugba ren Datenquellen, die sie fur Sekundaranalysen nutzen ki:innen. In einer ersten Runde stellen sie vor, wie sie fur sich die zunachst noch unbestirnmte Fragestellung prazisiert haben, welche Literatur zum Problem sie gefunden haben, welchen theoretischen Zugang sie wahlen und welche Hypothesen sie wie priifen wollen. Die Diskussion dieser V orstellungen fuhrt dann zu weiteren Prazisierungen und meistens zu Einschrankungen der manchmal fast hybriden urspriinglichen V orstellungen. Dann folgt die Umsetzung des V orhabens und die Darstellung von Fragestellung und Ergebnissen in einer schriftlichen Seminararbeit. Gegen Ende des Semesters werden die Arbeiten dann im Seminar vorgestellt und von den Teilnehmem diskutiert.

Die theoretische Unterfütterung sind die Postulate Bourdieus zur Sozialisation der Menschen. Der Operationalisierung der Fragestellung dient das Simulationsspiel "Reproduktion sozialer Ungleichheit durch die Schule". Es wurde einmalig durch fünf Regelschullehrkräfte gespielt. Sowohl vor als auch nach dem Spiel beantworteten die Lehrkräfte einen Likert-skalierten Fragebogen und diskutierten über die subjektiven Spielerfahrungen. Die Antworten der Diskussion wurden qualitativ ausgewertet und in Beziehung zu den Likert-skalierten Fragen gesetzt. Die qualitative Auswertung der Antworten der Fragebögen und der Diskussionsrunde lassen darauf schließen, dass eine Veränderung der Haltung nur bedingt eingetreten und möglich ist. Die Heterogenitätsdimension Armut hat insofern Auswirkungen auf das Hamburger Schulsystem, als das die Chancenungleichheit immer mehr zunimmt, sollte es dabeibleiben, dass nur die Schule interveniert. Diese Intervention wird in Zukunft nicht ausreichen. Es muss sozialpolitisch in den Stadtteilen gehandelt werden, die in den letzten Jahren benachteiligt wurden. Diese Arbeit ist sowohl für Regelschullehrer als auch für Sonderpädagogen interessant, da diese im Kontext zur Problematik Armut im Sozialfeld Schule steht.

Book excerpt: OF 'SOLIDARITY' IN UK SOCIAL WELFARE Here then, perhaps, is a British version of solidarity in social welfare, but early there are strong tensions between the powerfully liberal individualistic strands of the British understanding of the functions of the state and the socialistic or communitarian tendency of a commitment to universal welfare provision. In the search for the roots of this understanding of welfare we shall survey, fitst, the historical background to these tensions in some early British political philosophers, starting with Hobbes and ending with Mill. We then consider the philosophical and social influences on the Beveridge Report itself, and we will trace the emergence of the philosophy of the welfare state in the era following the Second World War. Finally we consider the contemporary debate, as it relates to the 'Third Way' thinking of New Labour. 2. A mSTORICAL SKETCH In the previous section we observed that the philosophy underlying the Beveridge Report could be described as 'liberal collectivism'. What are the historical antecedents of this strange amalgam of individualism and collectivism? Within the short scope of this chapter, any account of the philosophical history must be little more than a sketch, but we can perhaps understand most debates in British socio-political thought as a continuing dialogue with the well known claim of Thomas Hobbes in Leviathan that all political institutions are founded on egoistic motives.

Stefan Hradil und Karl Martin Bolte (1984) betonen die anhaltende Relevanz sozialer Herkunft und ihren Einfluss auf den Bildungserfolg von Kindern. Die PISA-Studie von 2000 verdeutlichte die andauernde Unsicherheit Deutschlands im internationalen Vergleich hinsichtlich der Chancengleichheit im Bildungswesen. Trotz fortgesetzter Reformen bleibt das Ziel der tatsächlichen Chancengleichheit nach wie vor unerreichbar.

While the findings demonstrate that intense prejudice against minorities is not widespread among Germans, many of whom in fact can be considered immigrant- and minority-friendly, a crystallization of attitudes is also evident: that is, attitudes towards immigrants are strongly correlated with anti-Semitism and with other worldview dimensions, such as positioning in the left-right political spectrum. In this sense, the fundamental question of whether immigrants and other minorities should be regarded as fellow citizens or ethnic outsiders remains relevant in the German context.

Book excerpt: Most public debate on reunited Germany has emphasized economic issues such as the collapse of East German industry, mass unemployment, career difficulties, and differences in wages and living standards. The overwhelming difficulty resulting from reunification, however, is not persisting economic differences but the internal cultural divide between East and West Germans, one based upon different moral values in the two Germanies. The invisible wall that has replaced the previous, highly visible territorial division of the German nation is rooted in issues of the past-the Nazi past as well as the German Democratic Republic past. In emphasizing economic differences, the media and academics have avoided dealing with typically German cultural traits. These include the psychological posture of West Germany, which emphasized not differences between East and West but the break with Germany's Nazi past. The adversarial posture of certain professional groups in East Germany towards the liberal and democratic values of West Germany have also been an obstacle. Reviewing the problems accompanying reunification, chapter 1 explores German culture and history and the moral lessons evolved from the Nazi past. Chapter 2 focuses on the East-West mindset and how differences in attitude affect efforts to adapt to reunification. Chapter 3 discusses the simulated break with Nazi Germany in the German Democratic Republic. Chapters 4, 5, and 6 analyze the roots of the adversary posture of the professional groups in East Germany towards the values of the Berlin Republic. Chapter 7 demonstrates the strong presence of inherited, typically German cultural traits among East Germans, such as a lack of individualism, suspicion of strangers, and obedience to authority. Chapter 8 documents the extent to which a right-wing extremist culture has remained latent in Eastern Germany. Chapter 9 documents the extent to which moral reasoning in the GDR relieves the individual of any kind of responsibility for the actions of the state, reproducing the way ordinary Germans rationalized their participation in the Nazi regime immediately after World War II. Chapter 10 concludes with an overview of the historical and sociological factors revolving around the discussion of Nazi Germany, the GDR and inner unification.This volume will be important for historians, political scientists, anthropologists, sociologists, and a general public interested in Germany's reunification.
