Download or read book Coalition of the unWilling and unAble written by John R Deni and published by University of Michigan Press. This book was released on 2021-01-12 with total page 275 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why does the United States need European allies, and why is it getting more difficult for those allies to partner with Washington in standing up to China, pushing back against Russia, and pursuing other common interests around the world? This book addresses the economic, demographic, political, and military trends that are fundamentally upending the ability and willingness of European allies to work with Washington. Brexit and its impact on Britain’s economy and its military, Germany’s seemingly relentless economic and political rise, France’s continuing economic malaise, Italy’s aging population and its withdrawal from major overseas operations, and Poland’s demographic decline and single-minded obsession with Russia will combine to make partnership with Washington nearly impossible. In short, the constellation of allies and partners the United States has relied on since 9/11 will look very different a decade from now. How should Washington respond? It doesn’t hold all the cards, but this book offers an array of practical recommendations for American leaders. By leveraging these proposals, U.S. policy-makers can avoid the worst-case scenarios and make the most of limited opportunities.
Book Synopsis EIB Investment Report 2017/2018 by : European Investment Bank
Download or read book EIB Investment Report 2017/2018 written by European Investment Bank and published by European Investment Bank. This book was released on 2018-09-07 with total page 543 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The EIB Investment Report is the bank's flagship research report, aiming to deepen our understanding of investment and investment financing in the EU. It presents and analyses the 2017 release of the EIB Investment Survey (EIBIS) of businesses in the EU, which also includes a Europe-wide survey of municipal authorities. Following a theme of "From recovery to sustainable growth", it describes how the investment recovery in Europe continues to strengthen and become more broad-based, across countries, sectors and asset classes. Business investment is being driven by the improving outlook and efforts to keep pace with competitors, but there is still need to improve business environment. This investment recovery is generally supported by good financing conditions for firms, but deleveraging remains a drag. EU firms continue to be net savers overall, suggesting that many firms are unwilling to invest despite a liquid financial position. Nonetheless, with the improving economy there also emerge structural investment needs in innovation, skills, infrastructure and sustainability. The EU continues to fall behind global peers in terms of R&D spending, while other types of intangibles – software, training, organisational capital, etc. – prove to be just as important. Business environment has to improve further. Persistent financial fragmentation across the EU could slow convergence and reduce capacity to absorb shocks. This report indicates that there is a window of opportunity to address structural investment needs through both public and private investment, with targeted policy intervention to ease specific constraints.
Book Synopsis EIB Investment Report 2018/2019: Retooling Europe's economy by : European Investment Bank
Download or read book EIB Investment Report 2018/2019: Retooling Europe's economy written by European Investment Bank and published by European Investment Bank. This book was released on 2018-11-28 with total page 714 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Investment Report, issued annually by the European Investment Bank, provides a comprehensive overview and analysis of investment and the financing of investment in the European Union. It combines the exploration of investment trends with in-depth analysis, focusing especially on the drivers and barriers to investment activity. The report leverages on a unique set of databases and survey data, including EIBIS, an annual survey of 12 500 firms in Europe, which focuses on their assessment of investment and investment finance conditions, and which allows analysis with firm balance sheet information. The report provides critical inputs to policy debates on the need for public action on investment, and on the types of intervention that can have the greatest impact. This year's report addresses a moment of economic recovery in which investment growth, overall, is strong, but downside risks to the economic outlook are rising. It identifies many ways in which current investment is still structurally inadequate, given the legacy effects of the recent crisis and the great challenges that lie ahead. There is an urgent need to re-tool Europe, from its infrastructure and innovation ecosystem, through to its businesses and workers, to enhance prosperity and social cohesion.

Book Synopsis EIB Working Papers 2018/06 - Resource Misallocation in European Firms by : European Investment Bank
Download or read book EIB Working Papers 2018/06 - Resource Misallocation in European Firms written by European Investment Bank and published by European Investment Bank. This book was released on 2018-11-22 with total page 63 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Using EIBIS, this paper shows that the dispersion of marginal products across firms in the European Union is about twice as large as that in the United States and estimate potential increases in GDP from the removal of barriers between industries and countries. It examines the role of firm characteristics and emphasizes that some firm characteristics may reflect compensating differentials rather than constraints and the effect of constraints on the dispersion of marginal products may hence be smaller than has been assumed in the literature. It also shows that cross-country differences in the dispersion of marginal products are more due to differences in how the business, institutional and policy environment translates firm characteristics into outcomes than to the differences in firm characteristics per se.

Book Synopsis A European Public Investment Outlook by : Floriana Cerniglia
Download or read book A European Public Investment Outlook written by Floriana Cerniglia and published by Open Book Publishers. This book was released on 2020-06-12 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This outlook provides a focused assessment of the state of public capital in the major European countries and identifies areas where public investment could contribute more to stable and sustainable growth. A European Public Investment Outlook brings together contributions from a range of international authors from diverse intellectual and professional backgrounds, providing a valuable resource for the policy-making community in Europe to feed their discussion on public investment. The volume both offers sector-specific advice and highlights larger areas which should be prioritized in the policy debate (from transport to social capital, R&D and the environment). The Outlook is structured into two parts: the chapters of Part I respectively explore public investment trends in France, Germany, Italy, Spain and Europe as a whole, and illuminate how the legacy of the 2008 Global Financial Crisis is one of insufficient public investment. Part II investigates some areas into which resources could be channelled to reverse the recent trend and provide European economies with an adequate public capital stock. The essays in this outlook collectively foster a broad approach to and definition of public investment, that is today more relevant than ever. Offering up a timely and clear case for the elimination of bias against investment in European fiscal rules, this outlook is a welcome contribution to the European debate, aimed both at policy makers and general readers.
