Book excerpt: Jesus The Egyptian is a revolutionary attempt to examine the origins of Christianity as historical artifacts and not theological ones. The author offers the theory that Christianity is historically rooted in the ancient Egyptian creed of Osiris and not only, as is often claimed, in Judaism, presenting a radical break with established Christian tradition. Professor Gabriel offers an intriguing analysis of Jesus' psychological motivation to explain Jesus' rejection of Judaism and his adoption of the Osiran-Isis creed, the most popular and practiced pagan theology of Christ's time.

Book excerpt: 2016 Reprint of 1909 Edition. Full facsimile of the original edition, not reproduced with Optical Recognition Software. Originally published as "The Instruction of Ptah-Hotep" and also as "The Maxims of Ptahhotep," the work is believed by some scholars to be the oldest book in the world. Authorship is attributed to Ptahhotep, a vizier under King Isesi of the Egyptian Fifth Dynasty (ca. 2414-2375 BC). It is a collection of maxims and advice in the sebayt ("teaching") genre on human relations and are provided as instruction for his son. The work survives today in papyrus copies, including the Prisse Papyrus which dates from the Middle Kingdom and is on display at the Bibliotheque Nationale in Paris. There are considerable differences between the Prisse Papyrus version and the two texts at the British Museum. The 1906 translation by Battiscombe Gunn, published as part of the "Wisdom of the East" series and which is reprinted here, was made directly from the Prisse Papyrus, in Paris, rather than from copies. Some lessons include: Learning by listening to everybody and knowing that human knowledge is never perfect are a leitmotif. Avoiding open conflict wherever possible should not be considered weakness. Justice should be pursued and in the end it will be a god's command that prevails. Greed is the base of all evil and should be guarded against, while generosity towards family and friends is praiseworthy."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With frequent references to archeological finds, this book explores the ancient Egyptian concept of the afterlife. Author Ernest Alfred Wallis Budge was an English Egyptologist who worked for the British Museum. While Budge was not exempt from the darker side of Egyptology--he was complicit in the smuggling of antiquities, and by purchasing from dealers rather than engaging in excavation he helped encourage archeological looting--his tenure was marked by a decided increase in the quality of the museum's collection. Budge wrote this book using the full resources of the British Museum, and the resulting work offers an in-depth look at ancient Egyptian funerary practices.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sir E. A. Wallis Budge (1857-1934) was Keeper of the British Museum’s department of oriental antiquities from 1894 until his retirement in 1924. Carrying out many missions to Egypt in search of ancient objects, Budge was hugely successful in collecting papyri, statues and other artefacts for the trustees of the British Museum: numbering into the thousands and of great cultural and historical significance. Budge published well over 100 monographs, which shaped the development of future scholarship and are still of great academic value today, dealing with subjects such as Egyptian religion, history and literature. First published in 1899 as part of the Egypt and Chaldaea series, Egyptian Religion explores the principal ideas and beliefs held by the ancient Egyptians with regard to the doctrine of the resurrection and the future life. Although no systematic account dealing solely with this doctrine has been discovered, the Book of the Dead and various other religious texts from which this work is derived reflect ancient Egyptian beliefs, ideals and superstitions. Wallis Budge explores the Gods of the Egyptians and the themes of resurrection and immorality in a classic work, of great significance to students and scholars with an interest in ancient Egyptian and Middle Eastern history and religion.
