Book excerpt: Reflecting the results of twenty years; experience in the field of multipurpose flights, this monograph includes the complex routes of the trajectories of a number of bodies (e.g., space vehicles, comets) in the solar system. A general methodological approach to the research of flight schemes and the choice of optimal performances is developed. Additionally, a number of interconnected methods and algorithms used at sequential stages of such development are introduced, which allow the selection of a rational multipurpose route for a space vehicle, the design of multipurpose orbits, the determination of optimal space vehicle design, and ballistic performances for carrying out the routes chosen. Other topics include the practical results obtained from using these methods, navigation problems, near-to-planet orbits, and an overview of proven and new flight schemes.

Interest in the subject has grown, as space missions of increasing levels of sophistication, complexity, and scientific return - hardly imaginable in the 1960s - have been designed and flown. Although the basic tools of optimization theory remain an accepted canon, there has been a revolution in the manner in which they are applied and in the development of numerical optimization. This volume purposely includes a variety of both analytical and numerical approaches to trajectory optimization. The choice of authors has been guided by the editor's intention to assemble the most expert and active researchers in the various specialities presented. The authors were given considerable freedom to choose their subjects, and although this may yield a somewhat eclectic volume, it also yields chapters written with palpable enthusiasm and relevance to contemporary problems.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Interplanetary travel is a difficult task due to the high fuel mass required to reach other planets. Minimizing the cost of the manoeuvres (and, in turn, the fuel mass) is the objective preliminary mission design. During this phase, a large number of potential solutions must be evaluated quickly in search of feasible trajectories. This means computationally fast but simple models are preferred over accurate but slow models. Additionally, the process demands for an automatic execution due to the vast amount of solutions that must be evaluated. One of the major improvements regarding space travel was the discovery of the gravity assist, where a spacecraft uses the gravitational pull of a flyby planet to change its velocity with respect to the Sun. This allows reducing the amount of fuel mass, which in turn increases the science payload available for the mission. This thesis deals with the optimization of interplanetary trajectories with gravity assist. From an engineering approach, the thesis aims at producing an automatic optimizer of interplanetary trajectories with gravity assist manoeuvres aimed to preliminary mission design applications. From a scientific approach, the thesis aims at identifying key issues in the literature that allow for improvement and presenting novel implementations. Finally, the thesis has a strong educational component: the code and tools are specially focused towards an easy understanding and analysis of the underlying methods rather than producing a computationally efficient code. The result from this work is an automatic optimizer of multi gravity-assist interplanetary trajectories. The tool is fully modular and works with a double-loop approach: an outer loop obtains feasible sequences of planets using the Tisserand graph and an inner loop finds the best trajectory for each sequence using a hybrid heuristic optimizer and a patched conics method. Five key issues have been investigated and improved upon during the thesis: we provide an improved solution method for the Kepler equation, we have conducted an extensive bibliographic research of Lambert's problem and analyzed the representative methods to select the best for our application, we have recovered and improved the Lambert's problem method by Simó , we present two different models for the patched conics method, we have developed an automatic method to traverse the Tisserand graph and finally we have implemented several heuristic optimization methods and coupled them with an islands model. The resulting tool has already proved to work in operational mission design scenarios. However, it lends itself to many improvements and upgrades, in particular increasing the level of automation, improving the physical model and the patched conics method robustness, improving the visualization capabilities during the optimization stage and translating the code into compiled language to increase the computational performance with complex missions and intensive simulations.

Book excerpt: The book focuses on the orbital dynamics and mission trajectory (transfer or target trajectory) design of low-energy flight in the context of modern astrodynamics. It investigates various topics that either offer new methods for solving classical problems or address emerging problems that have yet to be studied, including low-thrust transfer trajectory design using the virtual gravity field method; transfer in the three-body system using invariant manifolds; formation flying under space-borne artificial magnetic fields; and the orbital dynamics of highly irregular asteroids. It also features an extensive study of the orbital dynamics in the vicinity of contact binary asteroids, including the 1:1 ground-track resonance, the equilibrium points and their stability, and the third-order analytical solution of orbital motion in the vicinity of the non-collinear equilibrium point. Given its breadth of coverage, the book offers a valuable reference guide for all engineers and researchers interested in the potential applications of low-energy space missions.

Book excerpt: Current technology for solar-electric propulsion is used to assess the potential performance advantages of low-thrust propulsion for an out-of-the-ecliptic mission. Simple normal-to-the-orbit thrust steering is assumed with coast subarcs permitted. The electric spacecraft is launched onto an Earth escape trajectory by an Atlas (SLV3C)-Centaur or a Titan IIIC. Comparisons with a similarly launched uprated Burner II stage reveal that significant performance gains are possible using the electric stage with 250- to 475-day flight times.

Book excerpt: Power limited, low-thrust trajectories were assessed for missions to Jupiter, Saturn, and Neptune utilizing a single Venus Gravity Assist (VGA) and a primary propulsion system based on either a 3-kW high voltage Hall thruster, of the type being developed by the NASA In-Space Propulsion Technology Program, or an 8-kW variant of this thruster. These Hall thrusters operate with specific impulses below 3,000 seconds. A trade study was conducted to examine mission parameters that include: net delivered mass (NDM), beginning-of-life (BOL) solar array power, heliocentric transfer time, required launch vehicle, number of operating thrusters, and throttle profile. The top performing spacecraft configuration was defined to be the one that delivered the highest mass for a range of transfer times. In order to evaluate the potential future benefit of using next generation Hall thrusters as the primary propulsion system, comparisons were made with the advanced state-of-the-art (ASOA), 7-kW, 4,100 second NASA's Evolutionary Xenon Thruster (NEXT) for the same mission scenarios. For the BOL array powers considered in this study (less than 30 kW), the results show that the performance of the Hall thrusters, relative to NEXT, is largely dependant on the performance capability of the launch vehicle, and that at least a 10 percent performance gain, equating to at least an additional 200 kg dry mass at each target planet, is achieved over the higher specific impulse NEXT when launched on an Atlas 551.Witzberger, Kevin E. and Manzella, DavidGlenn Research CenterHALL THRUSTERS; SOLAR ELECTRIC PROPULSION; DEEP SPACE 1 MISSION; SPACECRAFT CONFIGURATIONS; NASA SPACE PROGRAMS; SOLAR ARRAYS; POWER CONDITIONING; MATHEMATICAL MODELS; SPECIFIC IMPULSE; HIGH VOLTAGES; NEPTUNE (PLANET); SATURN (PLANET); LAUNCH VEHICLES

Book excerpt: Sending spacecrafts to any other planet or satellite within the Solar System is a difficult task. To be able to reach it at a precise time, it is crucial to know at which position the target planet is going to be, as well as a good study of the trajectory that the spacecraft is going to follow, which shall not be too close to any other object in the Solar System. It must be also be taken into account that the spacecrafts have a limited fuel capacity. In order to avoid using a high amount of fuel, multi-gravity assist trajectories are useful to provide additional manoeuvering to the spacecrafts without consuming fuel. Given an arbitrary sequence of planets for the swing-by manoeuvres, the next step is to determine when the spacecraft must be launched and how long will it take to it to perform the transfer trajectory. In this preliminary stage of the mission analy-sis, optimization algorithms can be used to obtain the most efficient trajectory, for instance, the trajectory at which the spacecraft requires the least amount of fuel to reach its destination. From the wide variety of heuristic optimization algorithms, in this Master's thesis four of them have been chosen (Genetic Algorithm, Differential Evolution Algorithm, Particle Swarm Algorithm and the simulated annealing algorithm). The aim of this thesis is to perform a hyperparameter optimization, that is, finding whether a certain combination of parameters for each optimizer works properly for different trajecto-ries' scenarios: a direct launch to an outer planet and a multi-gravity assist scenario to outer planets as well as to inner planets. The results show that it exists a region of parameters for the Genetic Algorithm and the Differential Evolution Algorithm where the best solutions can be found. Simulated Annealing Algorithm shows a dependance on the scenario, as well as some parameters of the Particle Swarm Algorithm.

Book excerpt: Electric propulsion has recently become a viable technology for spacecraft, enabling shorter flight times, fewer required planetary gravity assists, larger payloads, and/or smaller launch vehicles. With the maturation of this technology, however, comes a new set of challenges in the area of trajectory design. Because low-thrust trajectory optimization has historically required long run-times and significant user-manipulation, mission design has relied on expert-based knowledge for selecting departure and arrival dates, times of flight, and/or target bodies and gravitational swing-bys. These choices are generally based on known configurations that have worked well in previous analyses or simply on trial and error. At the conceptual design level, however, the ability to explore the full extent of the design space is imperative to locating the best solutions in terms of mass and/or flight times. Beginning in 2005, the Global Trajectory Optimization Competition posed a series of difficult mission design problems, all requiring low-thrust propulsion and visiting one or more asteroids. These problems all had large ranges on the continuous variables - launch date, time of flight, and asteroid stay times (when applicable) - as well as being characterized by millions or even billions of possible asteroid sequences. Even with recent advances in low-thrust trajectory optimization, full enumeration of these problems was not possible within the stringent time limits of the competition.

STOpS did not necessarily find better trajectories than those actually flown, but instead demonstrated the capability to quickly and successfully analyze/plan trajectories. The analysis for each of these missions took 2-3 days each. The final program is a robust tool that has taken existing techniques and applied them to the specific problem of trajectory optimization, so it can repeatedly and reliably solve these types of problems.

With the aid of the extended multiple-shooting techniques with state and costate nodes, the hybrid method and the direct-shooting method are systematically described and used to solve a variety of optimal orbit transfer problems. The optimization methods are demonstrated by presenting solutions for optimal Earth-orbit and interplanetary trajectory examples, and complex interplanetary missions using solar electric propulsion (such as Eros sample return and Pluto-flyby missions). Alternative formulations of equations of motion are discussed, which include inertial frame transformation in terms of three Euler angles and a modified set of equinoctial elements using non-dimensional angular momentum. Finally, a low-thrust Earth-capture guidance scheme is developed and presented, which makes novel use of Perkins' low-thrust universal solution and doesn't require a stored reference trajectory. The simplicity and performance of this new guidance design makes it a viable candidate for onboard implementation.
