However, the human perception consists not only of visual input and thus it would be worthwhile to create multi-modal and interactive virtual environments. This thesis describes the techniques required to include the acoustic component into a virtual environment and furthermore the implementation of a software system, which takes advantage of these techniques to create complex acoustical scenes in real time. The system is based on the binaural technology. It features spatially distributed sound sources which are utilized to create an environment that is as authentic as possible. This comprises a description of the source, including its relevant angle-, distance- and time- dependent radiation, the sound distribution in the virtual scene (room acoustics), the perception-related consideration of all sound field components, as well as the exact reproduction of the artificial sound at the ears of the user. The focus of this thesis is put on the reproduction technology. In this context, an approach for dynamic crosstalk cancellation is presented, which enables a loudspeaker-based reproduction. The required filters are processed in real time on the basis of the position data and measured transfer functions of the outer ear. Furthermore the integration of this spatial audio system into a five-sided Virtual Reality display system is described and evaluated.

Book excerpt: Simulation using virtual reality (VR) is becoming an effective tool for the Army in training soldiers to do their required tasks. In VR, the human operator can interact with a wide variety of computer generated worlds developed from real or imaginary scenarios or both. The training that a soldier receives by simulation is usually cost effective to the Army and in a number of cases is safer for the individual than training in the real environment. Three dimensional (3-D) sound in the virtual environment (VE) provides a more realistic simulation of acoustic environments compared to diotic (mono) or dichotic (stereo) sound presentation. The major benefit of using 3-D sound is that an individual can determine the sound source direction. When sounds that are perceived to have direction and sights that represent virtual objects that produce the sounds are provided through a head mounted display, a person can monitor and identify sources of information from all possible locations. The purpose of this study was to determine if 3-D sound generated by a 3-D sound system could enhance the realism or fidelity of the VE. The main objective of the study was to determine if an individual could distinguish the direction of a sound source within a reasonable degree of accuracy. Three dimensional sound is produced by using a mathematical representation of the filtering characteristics of the pinnae provided through head related transfer functions (HRTFs). The HRTFs can be developed by recording a generated broadband sound using a probe microphone in the ear canal and subsequently dividing the Fourier transform of the recorded sound by that of the generated sound. When digital filtering techniques are used, HRTFs can be applied to sounds through headphones. When an arbitrary sound is filtered with HRTF based filters, the sound should appear to come from specified virtual locations outside the earphones.

Book excerpt: Human sound localization helps to pay attention to spatially separated speakers using interaural level and time differences as well as angle-dependent monaural spectral cues. In a monophonic teleconference, for instance, it is much more difficult to distinguish between different speakers due to missing binaural cues. Spatial positioning of the speakers by means of binaural reproduction methods using head-related transfer functions (HRTFs) enhances speech comprehension. These HRTFs are influenced by the torso, head and ear geometry as they describe the propagation path of the sound from a source to the ear canal entrance. Through this geometry-dependency, the HRTF is directional and subject-dependent. To enable a sufficient reproduction, individual HRTFs should be used. However, it is tremendously difficult to measure these HRTFs. For this reason this thesis proposes approaches to adapt the HRTFs applying individual anthropometric dimensions of a user. Since localization at low frequencies is mainly influenced by the interaural time difference, two models to adapt this difference are developed and compared with existing models. Furthermore, two approaches to adapt the spectral cues at higher frequencies are studied, improved and compared. Although the localization performance with individualized HRTFs is slightly worse than with individual HRTFs, it is nevertheless still better than with non-individual HRTFs, taking into account the measurement effort.

Book excerpt: Virtual auditory technology is being considered to cue armoured vehicle or air crew, via headphones of the communication system, to the spatial locations of potential lethal threats. Auditory localization in virtual auditory space (VAS) on the horizontal plane was investigated in this paper as a function of seven generic head-related transfer functions (i.e., digital filters for synthesizing the location of a sound in VAS), signal bandwidth (low-pass 3 kHz, high-pass 3 kHz and low-pass 14 kHz), and listening environment (quiet and in the presence of diffuse ambient Leopard tank noise). Testing was also conducted in the free-field which partially served to psychoacoustically validate the VAS conditions. The outcome of this preliminary study revealed that subject performance was better in free-field than in VAS. In the latter condition, subject performance was not significantly affected by type of generic head-related transfer function. Localization accuracy using the broadband stimulus was not significantly better than with the low-pass 3 kHz stimulus. Performance in the quiet condition was relatively better than in the noise condition. The implications of these results for implementation of a 3-D audio display into military environments and recommendations for future research are discussed.
